Sony: "Why do you hack your PSP?"

Piracy has become a big deal since the turn of the century and it was undoubtedly the downfall of the SEGA Dreamcast. However, it didn't stop there in the gaming world as we saw other consoles modded to play burned games or to just have games copied directly to their HDDs. Sony has seen a large amount of not only piracy but hacking as well. Their PlayStation Portable has been somewhat of a magnet for the deed and Sony is just now wanting to know "why?"

Sony recently sent a survey around that we've included for you below to check out. The survey asks why people hack their PSPs and if it makes them feel like a "rebel."

With the survey shown above, how would your answers play out? Let us know your opinion on the subject in the comment section below and we'll keep you up to date if anything comes of this.

LOL it makes me feel like a rebel hahaha...

Thats's funny! I can see them wanting to know why people do it, but some of these questions seem kinda silly

Seems like fair questions and it is good to see a company like Sony making a survey to better understand it's users and their mindset.

Believe me, If MS did this with the Xbox, the 360 would be a a lot better.

i would hack my psp too if i could get it to work right...seriously i try to stay away from console hacks although i did mod my ps2...a really goos survey question would have been, "Do you hack your PSP because of the high cost of games?"

@littleB69- true.. i do it for emulators and to watch all types of video. i dont play psp games much, prefer old school classics on handheld. so why not, gaming is not the cheapest interest so if they had divx already and psp games(even just old remakes) at 15-20 euro at the most it would give me less reason too. also some custom hack themes are very nice. but in all honesty itouch has a sweet emulator so no need for my psp anymore

Thats hilarious.   Why don't they just look at what people impliment when they hack their PSP's and start implimenting it in official fw's?? Okay minus the whole playing ripped psp games part. But homebrew in itself is a beautiful thing, and if Sony were to just include it off the bat then I would have no need for custom fw's.

lets face it, if this means that sony will change the firmware to allow us to play more games or game emulators or copy PS1 games to memory stick to play on PSP then i'm all for it...I ain't gonna hack my PSP (because i'll probably goose it) but i want FFVII and FFVIII on it...

I see this as a fair questionaire.  And as for the first question, I bet theier are people in the community that would answer that with a positive.  There are so many people in the world with PSP's and the # that hack or modify it has to also be a great number.  If these questions get more communication between developers and end-users and in return more features that end-users want, then I'm all for it!

I honestly don't see why so many people mod and hack their consoles either. First of all, if you mod or hack your console or handheld device, you can't get the Original Manfacturer to repair it because you modified it and if something happened to your console, you would have to go out and buy a new one if it died or needed repairs.

People need to stop being so f***ing cheap and buy the games. Because of Filesharing sites like Limewire, people these days want everything for free. You've got people going on these sites trying to get a "Free PS3", or just trying to get anything for free. And I'm pretty sure that because of  filesharing websites and Torrent Websites the sales of video games, movies and music have been affected.

If someone has the money to buy a Xbox 360, PSP, or PS3, then they should have the money to buy a $60 dollar game and it's that simple to me.

The only reason why I would hack a console or portable device would be to enable it to have more functionality, but I would never download games and burn them. I support the gaming industry and the music industry and I will always buy my music and video games.

The thing I see with a modded psp is that I don't have to carry around all my bloddy umd's. If modders can hack a psp game into a single file that can be copied to the memory stick then Sony should be including a digital copy when I buy a game. Just like some movies are now (Family Guy Blue Harvest). This and all the extras you get, like Emulators, more video codec options, etc. Don't get me wrong though Sony is lying to themselves if they don't think that most modders do it for the free games.

I think the questionare doesn't address the real issue of PIRACY.

For example, you hack your PSP to play illegal copies of games you don't own.  Thats bad!!  But if you own the PSP and own the GAME, for me thats is a very different topic.

You go to the market and buy milk, cookies'cream icecream, ice, and blend them together to make a Cookies'Cream milkshake.  Nothing wrong..  Why is this different?

Buy a PSP + SNES game and play it on the go with the PSP.  Why is it illegal?  I can go with voiding warranty, but is not illegal if you legitamely bought the necessary stuff and used freeware to do necessary convertions.

    You be de judge.

people do it, because they want portable access to games that were MADE for portable systems.

IE: mario, zelda, metroid, contra, etc. All those SNES classics can be saved any time, and are perfect for on the go. Side scrollers are what gamers love, for on the go gaming. The psp is too caught up in 3D to get up with that.

If sony released a bundle of side scrollers in a psp disc, then so many people would buy it. The graphics don't even have to top what's seen on the DS. Believe me. the world knows the psp "can" do more. It just doesn't have to, with on the go gaming.

playsation 3 will also be hacked but one thing in mind the ps2 has allready been hacked and still IS the bigest seling console in gameing history. If the ps3 is hacked i think even more consoles will be sold why?1.some people cant aford cds at 59$ if moded you can get a cd for 10$ this will alow more people will purchase the  ps3 in other contries this has happened to the ps2 and it still sales.2.There is a disadvantege thoug to the game developers but not the console makers more and more people will buy the console but not the real cd.

AclayPS3. It's not that simple man, most of the PS3 owners I know saved up for months to buy the system itself, and with most games only delivering 10 hours of gaming it gets way too expensive. $60 + tax is pretty high for some people. It's not like buying a Ferrari, and then complaining about gas prices or insurance rates. If I were to hack my PSP it would be to be able to play PS1 games. There is no way I will ever revist FF7, 8 , 9 , and MGS unless it's on the PSP.

The dreamcast had no encryption at all and that is why others did things to it or pirated the games.  I use the gps on my psp it is the cheapest gps for me because I already owned the psp and just cost 50 for the gps. I still buy games it is only hacked for gps and custom interface.

  28. chimmy

    • 3:25pm BST - April 10th, 2008

Dave Wales...What a Plonker!!!  Hacking wasn't the downfall of Dreamcast, it was lack of sales, as everyone knew on launch day, that PS2 was just 12 months away.  PS2 was the downfall of Dreamcast.  As for hacking? It's a relatively small portion of people who risk their consoles to do it, and some of those may not do it if suppliers gave free replacement copies for damaged disks.  It's the license we pay for not the cheap disk.

  33. hush404 | hush404

    • 3:55pm BST - April 10th, 2008

Honestly, I think it's wrong to hack your PSP if all you're doing it for is free ISOs, totally ripping off the dev teams who work hard to make those games.

I however, belive that hacking is good in terms of emulation of old systems, allowing the machine to play more common media files and do things that Sony hasn't gotten around to implementing.

  34. DaveW | hush404

    • 4:44pm BST - April 10th, 2008

Chimmy are you serious? Piracy absolutely destroyed the Dreamcast. You could play burnt games on the Dreamcast without a mod. It doesn't matter how many consoles you sell, if the games being made for the console aren't being bought. Everyone knows that consoles lose money during the first couple of years which is usually balanced out through attach rates of software. Dreamcast had a horrible attachment rate because of the fact you could copy their games to a blank CD-R and play them for free after renting them. Or just downloading them from a torrent client and burning them that way. The PlayStation 2 had very little to do with the Dreamcast being SEGA's last venture into the console market.

If Sony really wants to stop hacking on the PSP, give people the ability to write and share their own programs. MS is comming out with that and they already have a system in place where user can create and share their created games. Is Sony did the same on their more flexible platforms they could end up being the next Youtube as far as usable content goes.

Haha go on davewales!! not shy to put someone straight big up.. ;) but honestly dreamcasts downfall where the saturn failed, all sponsor money going to ars3nal,its ugly design and piracy.

I love sony product i love mac products but i still will hack them f it helps me do more and have more fun. companys should be happy and use hacking as a feild of advertisement. if they wouldn't fight it and just go with it they probally could make a whole lot more in profites.  just saying.

i know wat the most popular reosen is, its cuz you can d more with a hacked psp than wa u can with a norma one, i know somone who's in on aot of this, they told me NOT to update my psp to one of the latest firmwares cuz it just added security patches, they said i should hack it to do al this stuff, and ive also had the same offer for my ps3 to be hacked or modded, and i said " hmm, well im not going to do it cuz 1, the features that we could do with a hacked ps3 or psp are probably some of the features that will come in playstation 4 or a psp 2 and etc" so u see, its not worth it, cuz ud be ruining surpises.

Well, I think this is maybe a bit too focused on piracy. If they really want to know why people "hack" their PSP's they need to have a bit more about the other abilities and legal uses, not so much focused on illegal copying of games. Personally, I think the hacking is useful to be able to run homebrew apps or copy my LEGALLY bought game to a memory stick. I haven't done one illegal thing with my PSP and don't want to. I'm sure there are plenty of people who DO go the illegal route but I'm just impressed with the extra apps and things people have made for the PSP. That increases the value of the PSP for me...

How old are you?  If you were around at the time, you would remember... the Dreamcast simply DID NOT SELL, that's what "destroyed" it!  Next you'll be telling us piracy detroyed the Atari Jaguar.  There are other reasons why consoles die laying the blame at piracy is just stupid, as legit sales far out weigh their impact, parallels can be drawn with the music industry... why do we hack our psp sony? for the same reason hackers have been hacking since the first homebrew computers to bring our the devices full potenical. companies have always for whatever reason put rectrictions on their devices they make weather its phones, handheld computers, pcs or whatever so its the job of the hacker to bring out all of the functions that the device can do then post that to the net so everyone can benifit. if you would stop trying to stop hacking and embrace it and actually help hackers then sony would become the best seller of technology. because sony does make the best technology however you cripple it.
