Grand Theft Auto IV wins VGA's Game of the Year

In a disappointing move to say the least, Spike TV announced that Grand Theft Auto IV won their Game of the Year award. While we're sure plenty of you will agree this was an undeserved award, the sales totals Rockstar compiled with this title was very impressive. However, with strong competing titles like Metal Gear Solid 4 in the mix, it's hard to justify how and why GTA IV was chosen.
We're not sure if politics played a large part in this decision or if the panel of judges really were this delusional, but we are sure that there were other deserving titles. Thankfully, our readers have spoken and we will be announcing PSU's Reader's Choice Awards GOTY tomorrow afternoon.
We'd love to here what you think about this decision below.

The politics in it, I think, is that they chose a multiplataformer as GOTY in order to not piss anyone off.
That said. It is weird. GTA 4 was both on the Best X360 game and Best PS3 game category and GeOW2 won X360 and LBP won PS3.
So the question is: What is better? GeOW2 or LBP?
(OTOH, the politics might also be that Best specific console game must be an exclusive)

absolute BS horrible horrible horrible this game was NOT goty material ( it was really a mediocre title) and sold on pure hype alone! i would have rather seen gears of war 2 win considering its at least is a quality game whereas gta4 is not, honestly though MGS4 i think deserved it the most but as others said i think they chose GTA becaues it was multiplat still cop out move, like i said gears should've won over gta4

Complete garbage and I knew that GTA4 would win it.Honestly,LBP or Spore should have won GOTY easily.Both games are unique and innovative.MGS4 was great,but it's nothing as refreshing as the other two games.This is why I did not watch that BS and waited for PSU to post the GOW and Uncharted trailers.It's a shame that politics and the commercialization of the video game industry is ruining what we love about this form of entertainment in the first place.

@2 You hit the nail on the head. It's all politics. If (for example) Gears of War 2 beat out MGS4, the PS crowd (myself included) would have been p!ssed, and vice-versa.
But still, GTAIV sold millions of copies and (questionably) racked up some high scores in game mags. It might not have been great, but it was a developer's wetdream, and it helped keep EA's mitts off of Rockstar.

First of all, let me say that I really enjoyed GTA4 and will most likely play it again over the holidays. But... there is no way it's the GOTY. Where are games like LBP, MGS4 and Fallout 3? This is just politics are work, nothing more, nothing less.

The only reason why this game won game of the year is because it sold more. GOTY should be judged solely on the game itself and not sales figures. Everyone knows that MGS4 was the best game released this year.

@10 - Saints Row can't top GTA IV in my opinion. Saints Row I played once, now it's at the bottom of my game stack. :)

You people voted for Hubert Humphrey...AND YOU KILLED JESUS! MGS4, Fallout 3, or LittleBigPlanet should have won. Even Pixel Junk Eden has better qualifications for GOTY than GTA4! If Gears 2, or Fable 2 won GOTY, I don't this it would have been as stupid. Yeah, it would make the PS3 crowd mad, but GTA was really a BS pick. This is like when "Shakespeare in Love" won Best Picture over "Saving Private Ryan". It's like picking a rich, ugly girl to be prom queen and everyone takes it seriously except the other students. Don't get me wrong, GTA4 was a fun game, but there really wasn't anything spectacular about it over the previous GTA games. In fact, a lot of people said GTA3 was better. Somebody should investigate ties between Rockstar Games, Time Magazine, and Spike TV. Something doesn't smell right. It seems to me there could be other interests at work here. Usually, entertainment, or news companies are all owned, or have ties to one person, or company, like Rupert Murdoch, or Ted Turner. So to enhance one brand, or product, they'll get their newpapers, magazines, or TV channel to send out positive coverage of it.

Yeah, this game is over rated. The dl content they showed looked pretty cool though. Regardless, this isn't goty material. I put Left 4 dead, Fallout 3, GOW 2, and MGS4 way ahead of this title. And it's too hard to choose from those 4.

I agree with free agent, although I believe MGS4 should win this title hands down. Sorry guys but I don't think LBP is near GOTY worthy.

the Game of the Year is the "pinnacle of gaming achievement during that year" i fail to see how GTA beats MGS4 and LBP in 'gaming achievement'

everyone loved gta4 when it came out, i dont know why everyone has turned their back on it now, i think it deserves the award. lbp and mgs4 were both disappointing, neither had any replayability, or decent story. mgs4 didnt even make sense. i'm writing this with my ps3 keypad, get one. they are awesome!

Talk about a big disappointment! I knew for a fact that Spike would pick GTA4 knowing the fact that they always screw up in giving awards to games that really don't deserve it. Listen I'm a big fan of the GTA series BUT I think MGS4 should have won this award without question. Spike doen't know anything about games, like XPLAY.

How this won is beyond me; this is without doubt the most lame GTA ever!
Bring back san andreas.
Im gonna offer a somewhat controversial offering for GOTY: Burnout Paradise!
It's a great game, great multiplayer ability and a true testament to a company who see the wisdom in refining a single game with quality and consistent DLC.

jesus wtf is wrong with all you MGS4 fanboys, i normally dont like MGS games, i gave it a try, still dont. Mediocre to say the least. GTA on the other hand deserves GOTY as it is made by people who have a passion for games. R* didnt give into EA and im pretty sure Konami or whoever makes MGS would jump at the chance to be bought out, just cause you like MGS series doesn't mean you have to like and support it religiously, errrr rant over.

@34. Its like I said earlier. GTA4 won only because it was the best selling game this year. If it would have been up to the gamers, MGS4 would have won by a landslide. GTA4 is a great game. But its not an overall better game than MGS4. I'll even bet that GTA4 dont have higher ratings than MGS4 on websites.

MGS pushes the boundries by leaps and bounds every time. MGS4 was a milestone in gaming as well as LBP. GTA4 was just another GTA but without planes. MGS4 is GOTY!!!!

Everyone is saying oohhh MGS4 or LBP should have got it. Of course you are, they're PS3 exclusives. Do you think 360 fans are saying that? No, they're saying Gears 2 should have won. So what makes you right and them wrong, besides just being a fanboy.

WTF! GTA IV doesn't even make my Top 10 games released this year. Seriously what a load, it's just as bad as Xplay announcing Fable II as their GOTY. The GOTY award is so meaningless, really.

I loved GTA III, and Liberty City Stories, Most of my memories of great gaming come from these games..... SAN ANDREAS DID NOT COME ANYWHERE CLOSE TO GIVING ME THAT...... Then R* made GTA IV, and it is the BEST GTA game out there...PERIOD.... Just because the graphics were not KZ2 quality is one of the main reasons it is getting bashed.... and everyone just jumps on the bandwagon, thats the reason it sold so much, and now thats the reason people hate it......
