Apple to join the PSP and DS in handheld market

Using the iPhone, Apple has plans on entering the handheld gaming market by unveiling the software development kit for the phone. At an event at Apple's headquarters, Apple announced support for OpenAL, 3D sound, and OpenGL which are all standards that game developers currently develop with.
How can this be done with no joystick or D-pad you ask? Well, the guys over at Apple has given developers access to the iPhone's accelerometer that senses where the phone is on the three axis; similar to the PlayStation 3's sixaxis remote. By moving the phone, gamers will be able to move characters or vehicles on the screen.
During the event, Apple demoed a game titled, Touch Fighter, which allows gamers to control a spacecraft around the screen by of course, tilting the phone.
While this may not sound like a very profitable approach, Apple has contacted game companies such as EA and Sega and asked them to create a game to show that it can be done on the iPhone. EA showed a demo of Spore and Sega demoed Supermonkey Ball, both of which games made use of the accelerometer.
Apple has also patented a method that would automatically determine which games on the iTunes Store are compatible with iPods or iPhones.
With the substantial success of the Nintendo DS and with God of War out and Crisis Core on the way for the PSP, all we can say is 'Good Luck.' You're going to need it.

i have the psp and used it for music but the friggin memory sticks were so much and didn't hold enough music and Sony Connect was pathetic compared to itunes....so i got the ipod touch and pretty much anything made for the iPhone also works on the iPod touch(unless it has something to do with the phone).......so i'm happy that i'll be able to play a game while i'm bored...though i know it will not compare to GOW....glad i still have my PSP so i can at least play that!!!

EPIC FAIL!
hehe I kid. I guess if anyone can do it its APPLE. I mean people think what ever they do is pretty freaking awesome.
I do think some of their stuff is pretty wicked. The new touch pad on the MBA is pretty sweet, however its fooking HUGE!!! and like most apple products, I think its overpriced.
but good to them.

I really don't like the idea of making the Iphone capable of playing games without actual controls/buttons. Yep, Apple is going to need lots of luck on this one.
If Apple would make these new games avaliable on the Iphone, then that would mean that they "should" make the games avaliable for the Ipod Touch because it uses the Touch Screen also.
Those Apple products are all overpriced though... I mean come on, a 32GB Ipod Touch for $499, that's just insane. You could buy a 80GB PS3 with Blu-ray for the same price.

When Apple entered the music market with iPod consumers had access to millions of songs and you bought the iPod for this reason. If Apple are entering their IPhone in the gaming market to compete against DS and PSP, well good luck as where are you going to get the games to entice people to get an iPhone for that feature? Who wants to pay them prices and have a contract for gaming?
My Sony Ericsson k850i has motion control, I have to tilt my phone to move the ball in marbal madness. Its a good idea but I think it lts limited to only certain types of games. The iPhone will be no more than a phone that has mobile phone games just like my k850i.

@ Dave-The-Rave - Totally agree with you man! Thats where the psp is has the upperhand, especially if you have a memory stick slot on ur com or a ps3. All you do is click and drop that simple.
I think this is going to be a major flop. People are going to be wishin they bought a psp. Because now you can practically do anything with a psp that u can with an iphone. You can call people on a psp, internet browzer, mp3 player, movie player. Oh no touch screen...boo hoo . -

I don't think apple has any intention of advertising thier iphone or ipod touch as a handheld gaming counsle, let alone thinking they will compete with nintendo or sony in that department. This is just something to make their products seem more versitile, like the games already released for the ipod classic and nano.

I agree with most of you all... Apple should stick with the computers, phones and MP3 (IPod) and they will need a hand from god if they want "this" to be a good investment. I mean comon! Apple sux at games they have few games to the Mac at it is (altho they make good OS :0 ) but the games sux.
Apple Stay With The Normal Geek Stuff!! Stop Doing Dumb Thinks That Can Make You All Go Down The Drain To The House Of Poor!!
Annnd... Peace Out Homies! matrixcoder psn id :)

meh, hate products that arent used for what they are, cellphones wont be gameconsoles until they have great hardware that can be used for gaming, i mean sure iphone and such are good but its just pushing it too much, how long would it take for a game to start and would you be able to answer if you get call? its like saying ingame xmb but on phone, i think ipod touch could have possibility wereas they have games already made for it and you can turn of music its not that much of importance compared to phone call.

I don't think they're trying to compete with the DS and PSP. I mean, how good are games on a cell phone anyway? Even if it is the iPhone (which I took back after a week out of disappointment) the PSP and DS are MADE for games. A phone is just that, a phone.
@ Dave-the-Rave I agree. That's my biggest complaint about iTunes. They try to simplify things, but to make playlists you always end up with songs you don't want unless you put each song in individually.
@AclayPS3 If won't buy an iPod touch because of that. I have an 80gb iPod that's half full with just one genre of music. If I had the biggest Touch (32gb) it still wouldn't be enough space. And that price, HA!

I love apple (especially os x) and am pretty sure the iPhone will keep doing well in the smart phone market. 2 things impressed me yesterday regarding games on the iPhone. First the development SDK looks simple yet powerful which will help developers grow a steady supply of titles. Also the hardware is well suited to games with responsive tilt sensing AND multitouch. In many ways this could beat a DS in terms of innovative control and perhaps graphics as well. This could be a viable game platform some day. Let's not forget that the iPhone and Touch have easily outsold the DS over the past year and will become a sizable market in a year or two.

Ummm wow, people...paranoid much? The LAST thing Apple is trying to do is to make the iPhone a game platform. They're competing with MOBILE PHONES, not the PSP, etc. Jeez! Open GL, etc are actually used for more things then games as well people!! The point is that folks can now make real programs for the iPhone. Face it, the iPhone has other mobile phones whipped when it comes to features, functionality and cool factor. The reason they came out with the SDK was all the developers BEGGING for it so they can make apps for the device. Sure it will include some games, but nothing like you see on the PSP. Dave-the-Rave....Really? You've been able to drag MP3's to iTunes to add them to your library from the beginning. Please...Apple INVENTED the drag-and-drop. You don't seriously mean to say that a key piece of Apple software won't allow that, do you? Gamers shouldn't be threatened by the iPhone, iPods, or other mobile phones playing games. The tech's not NEARLY there yet that will let those devices compete with handheld game systems. What it does though is expose more people to gaming. Once they get their feet wet, they're more likely to look into a gaming handheld or a console, and THAT expands the market, meaning more money for developers, more games, etc. it's a good thing!

www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=4755645 This link will guide you through the EASY process of getting a brand new retail Playstation 3! Here is how it works! First and foremost this is NOT like those other offers you see all over the web, where you are required to sign up for a million "free" offers that end up taking forever and costing you a bunch of money and a headache. You click this link and sign up for their referral program. That’s it! Once you sign up for your ONE required offer you use the link they provide you and post it on forums, or send it to friends, and if someone uses that link to sign up and complete one offer of their own, you get a referral. Here is the cost breakdown of the referral system. 8 Referrals = New retail 40gb PS3 10 Referrals = New retail 60gb PS3 12 Referrals = New retail 80gb PS3 and ONE game of your choice 14 Referrals = New retail 80gb Ps3 and two games YOU CHOSE (includes new releases like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune or Ratchet and Clank Future etc…) Plus many more PS3 offers and others including up to $475 in CASH I have been a member for 3 days and have 10 completed referrals on my account, well on my way to my chosen 14 (Already enough for a 60gb or 40gb PS3). I also have 250 people, who have signed up; if any 4 of them complete an offer I have my Ps3 and two games. It can take up to 3 days for a completed offer to process, so I may have already reached my goal. The company even covers shipping and handling so there is no hidden costs of ANY KIND. This website even has you create an account so you can track your progress the entire way through, and once your package ships, they supply a UPS tracking link. It is extremely user friendly I recommend you research this company online, as they are proven legitimate and not in any way a scam. EGM magazine actually did a story on them 2 years ago to see if they were legit and did in fact get a free system, so they proved it worked! The way it is possible is these sponsor's pay this company money for referring people to them, and using a portion of that money, buy you a PS3 as an incentive for helping them advertise. It is a pretty nice scheme, but it results in me getting something for free so I don't care. This will be my third free thing to get from this company; I have a 360 elite and iPhone for the cost of about 5 dollars. Enjoy your free system, free isn't a bad deal for a great console and a Blu-Ray player! www.YourPS34free.com/index.php?ref=4755645

What's the deal with the childish hissyfit being thrown by the article's author? (used to it from the commenters) It's a cell phone that's bringing innovation to the gaming world - that's a good thing. What do you want, everyone else to shut their gaming division down so the PSP is the only portable gaming platform?

I agree with tuxkapono, if the iphone can do it, then why not? It has the DS ability of a touch screen, plus limited motion sensing, plus phone, movie, mp3, GPS... PC connectivity... I'd say that puts it's capabilities higher than the PSP. Just accept that technology moves on, and the PSP is looking pretty dated.
