Today, Frank Simonis, chairman of the BDA commented on the claims that the HD DVD Promotional Group is releasing a triple-layer 51GB HD DVD disc. Simonis stated that he is not surprised by the announcement, and observes that the claims are only a marketing stunt to gain publicity.
"I'm not surprised at all...we believe they are very much in a reactive mood. Based on their format one would expect that a triple layer disc is three times a HD DVD single layer adding up to 45 GB. Now suddenly they change it to 51GB for promotional reasons”, said Simonis, during an interview with Tech.co.uk.
"Secondly I have not heard anything about a production line for this odd format. When are they going to start making these discs?"
He points out the fact old HD-DVD players may not even be able to read the new discs, since they are 3-layers and pack 2GB per layer more than the original format.
"You better ask them...I question it, however, very much," Simonis stated.
According to rumors, the HD-DVD camp has suggested that the new discs will be playable in the older HD-DVD players via a firmware update, though nothing official has been confirmed yet. Stay tuned for more news on this subject as more information is released.

It's obviously reactionary...the hd-dvd group is desperate for news and media right now. Anything to make people think they have a leg up on blu-ray (which they don't). It's quite simple...nothing will be able to combat the fact that blu-ray will sell more because it has over 4 million players out there. By the end of this year over 10 million blu-ray players will be in consumer hands--at this point, blu-ray is guaranteed survival even if it doesn't "win" the format war--Blu-ray will have enough players to stick around.

This story just made me think about Kaz & Philly boy and the fact that they dont seem to spend much time together anymore. Do they still share the occasional Japanese communal hot tub together? And then I started wondering if PSU's own Dusty Strokes was getting it on with Justin Pinkter - what do you think? That photo of Dusty cracks me up each time I see it. Is that a serious pose? and Justin sorry buddy but you do look like my sister.... And do those guys really write anything or do they just stick their name on the bottom of PR material? I dont know and Im just wondering out loud.

HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Jesus... Pick one! HD-DVD is upgraded old technology, Blu-Ray is new technology without the hassles of the old technology. Blu-Ray has a larger chance of going somewhere since it's new and has a lot of space.

This is ridiculous at this point... wish the hd-dvd camp would just give up. I've got 20 some blu ray movies, and there are quite a few hd-dvd exclusives that I'd like to have once this fight is over and they're on blu ray too. Hoping for the conclusion before the end of next year.....

The BDA better focus on rather I will be able to run BD profile 1.1 and 2.0!!!! The BDA is like a group of punks bullying the public. Im tired of hearing reports of how great the BD format is yet BD doesnt have the features or pricing as the competing format. Also, the players are all over the place, ie, some do this, some do that!!! And whats up with Fox??? DTS-HD Master Audio???? Why would you only encode your movies with a codec that still cannot be decoded and still doesnt have a date? Like I said, all over the place! As a consumer, Im not down with that.

lol if HD tried to make a 200 giger they would need 12 layers lol, i dont wish them good luck on that. Blu-Ray is the future of movies and gaming! in the end BR will dominate and HD will fall! SONY and BLU-Ray 4 life!

Just so you guys know, when the 200gb BD disc does in fact come out, it will NOT be used for videos. There is absolutely no need for that kind of space for video content. Those discs will more or less be used for data storage and the like. I don't imagine that even 3 layer BD or 4 layer HD-DVD's will be necessary for video. It seems to me like 50gb is the sweet spot, and, HD-DVD is not taking the lead in a race for storage space, but simply catching up to the right spot to be in.

Sides have been chosen by us techies. 50 gigabytes or what not is not going to mean sH#$% to consumers. Say something like "transformers an exclusive" .. now thats marketing power.
market sony market. i wouldn't even comment on size (ego. which ones bigger? who f'ing cares) if i was in a sony position. i'd make it a goal to run more blu ray movie ads. universal is milking there NBC partnership with HD-DVD ad's, either it be NBC shows or universal movies on dvd and hd-dvd

How long will Toshiba keep pushing a dead format? It's madness, the longer this war lasts the shorter the winning format will stay.

If you stand back and look at how everyone gets heated up about Toshiba and blasting their HD-DVD technology as inferior - it is quite funny and particularly ironic.
Reality is Sony is in financial trouble and Toshiba are currently trying to help Sony out by taking over their advanced gaming chip manufacturing business. Sony is in desperate need of cash right now and it is ironic that as Sony wastes more of its resources fighting Toshiba and trying to push Bluray, Toshiba is the only company stepping forward to bail out Sony by buying out Sony's PS3 chipset and Cell Processor manufacturing business for $800 million.
Sony management are done with expensive R&D so we can all look forward to Wii like technology evolutions - horray!! We will get low tech consoles from here on in!!. Sony wont be investing large sums of money anymore in Playstation 4 (if there is one). The CEO has already expressed this to share holders and they are selling the core R&D businesses as a result. This is a great shame!
This silly Bluray fight is killing Sony and it is killing the Playstation. I just dont understand why?
Bluray delayed the console for a year, it has burdened Sony with high R&D and process costs it will never recover and it burdens Playstation with a high manufacturing cost. The focus and fixation with Bluray format for movies has alienated its former game allies; Square Enix and Konami.
Blow Ray blows!

This is what I have been saying to my friends about the announcment, I'll believe it when I see it. It wouldn't be the first time that a company would make an announcement to gain publicity, even though the announcement wouldn't have any basis in reality.

@ 'The Cleaner': Blu-ray isn't "Sony's format". Sony are involved, but not alone. There are many large companies behind the format. As for "Blow Ray Blows" - clearly another bitter soul who's pissed he backed the wrong horse.

Im not "backing" either horse - they both can fail for all I care.
Ken Kutaragi didnt think Bluray should be included in PS3 and for this candid opinion, he lost his job. Sony was wrong and Ken was right; R&D behind Cell processor was expensive but worth every penny. The PS3 needed the grunt and I think the investment in CPU will benefit Playstation for many years to come. But Ken felt that it was too early to put Bluray into the PS3 because it was too expensive & not mature enough technology. Ken was the guy talking online future with downloadable content. They should have listened to him.
Sony is going it alone on Bluray because no one else is willing to loose money in defending Bluray. Acer has just turned around four weeks after signing with Bluray and has now signed with HD-DVD - Why? The cost is lower. They want to make money.
Apple are rumored to be joining both camps over the recent fall out with Sony. Apparently they are not happy with Sony partnering with Microsoft to use their music download DRM now that Sony has shut down their own format. The companies "backing" Bluray are not helping Sony out by subsidising PS3. Why dont they chip in and give PS3 free movies and games to bundle in? Why dont theycollectively as a consortium pay $150 million to get some big game studios to release titles exclusively on PS3 and exclusively on Bluray media? Not one company except Sony is baring the cost and as a result Sony now has to sell off its business piece by piece to stay afloat. I was only pointing out that Toshiba is the company buying the Cell Processor business and commenting on the irony.

HD-DVD isnt giving up, but with blu ray showing its far superior its going to keep the lead for awhile based on how they wouldnt need a firmware update for their players in order for blu ray players to play a higher layered lets say 200gb high def disc.

You guys keep balbbing about a 200GB disc?? Are you kidding me?? They had enough trouble getting the DUAL layer 50GB disc up to speed and they are still not at full sail on that. The 200GB disc is more of a publicity stunt then reality VS the 51GB disc that has already been demo'd and approved for production. Dont be mindless loyalist to the BDA.

source for the claim Ken said it was too soon for the BR in the PS3, please.
I can't imagine Ken telling, "let's go with good old DVD".. Please link to sources.
to my knowledge, Ken was fired more from his public points, his "kutarad", and probably is salary not being "justified" in these hard financial time for Sony. To my point, it's a shame.
The PS3 is just an incredible TRUE HD piece of hardware, From A-to-Z. And it should be confirmed, just let time pass, that HARD WORK and RISK (BR. Cell, overall PS3) are paying.
if not, we'll all have cheap-ass futur gen console, thank you nintendo.
