Brink dev: PS3 tech is "alien"

Splash Damage boss Paul Wedgwood has labelled the PlayStation 3’s innards as “alien,” admitting the developer has found it challenging to make the transition from PC to home consoles with upcoming shooter Brink.
Speaking to the chaps at Eurogamer, Wedgwood commented, “I would say that the biggest challenge is that transition from being a pure PC studio to a multiplatform one.”
“To me as a game director there are some things that are just alien, like PlayStation 3 technology and job systems, that I find it really difficult to get my head around.”
Still, this hasn’t been a problem given that the studio has simply hired folk who are more familiar with the PS3’s architecture to overcome the issue, among who include Heavenly Sword’s Dean Calver.
“Luckily it’s not my job to understand job systems: we just hire really talented people to solve it instead,” he explained. “We have Dean Calver who was lead programmer on Heavenly Sword as lead programmer on Brink.”
Brink is due out in spring 2010.

Yep, something known since the release of the PS3. PC devs just cannot hack the challenge.

Pshaw.... when I was younger I let someone else do the walking while I hung on to them. When I was on time I took the credit. When I was late I blamed the footdragger. It was the best time ever.

Splash Damage are an excellent developer. They've definitely made the right choice in hiring people more proficient in programming for the PS3.
Instead of trying to learn themselves and running the risk of not building a game as well as it could be, they've hired specific talent who'll help shape the game they want as well as speed up their learning process.
I love how people immediately think a statement like Paul's means they're rubbish at development. Splash Damage have found it difficult and looked for a good solution. Kudos to them. They'll build on the learnings of Brink - everybody has to start somewhere.

All I seem to hear these days "the ps3 is hard to make games for" Instead of "we look forward to mastering the playstations amazing hardware".
It's too hard...whaa, boo hoo. Suck it up and take some pride in you job while reinventing yourself for gods sakes.
Free, easy and the path of least resistance is what most people take now a days and it's weak and agravating.
Rant over,
B

Seems a lot of you seem to forget these people need to keep to a schedule. If half of that time is spent just figuring out how to use the architecture, what kind of game do you think will be made in the other half? Seriously, Sony needs to provide developers with better tools to use their system. Problems is, I don't even think Sony knows how to fully utilize the PS3 lol. Oh, and no 360 fanboy here, I own and love both systems.

lol at some of the complainers in the comments XD
programming is difficult as it is, making a jump from something you are adept in to something completely different is going to cause problems and headaches. This is expected since the ps3 requires a different style.
It's nice to see that they are hiring those experienced in developing for the console and not handing it over to another publisher/ dev team to sort out. :)

@8:
Yeah valve sucks. Half life, TF2, and L4D arent really that great. Downloaded all of them. Beat em, deleted em (except TF2, didnt like it at all so I deleted the day I downloaded it). I only kept Half Life 2 for the mods. But UT3 is the king of games to mod if you ask me. UT3 mods are awesome.

adapt and overcome if more developers did that instead of complaining the PS3 would be better off.

My wife and I got into an argument once. When asked what the argument was about I decided the best thing to do to myself look good was to blame her for the argument then go on to rehash the complexities of women just to make sure everyone agreed with my side of the story.
Worked out great in the end. I could absolve all responsibility while the world continued to look at her like, well, an alien... from Venus.

Alien technology? Now I'm getting worried that my PS3 may up and fly away into space without warning! After all, if it's "alien technology" it must have come from another planet. Right? =:S

The comments in this topic amuse me.
If they'd went ahead with 0 experience on the PS3 and released an incredibly poor game, most of you would be up in arms that the PS3 is capable of so much more.
Instead, they state that the PS3 technology is new and unknown to them, so they hire people who can help build, shape and improve their game. And yet most of you complain that they're upfront and honest in the difficulty they see in the PS3.
Just remember this thread when Brink gets here. Splash Damage are an independent developer and as such, doesn't have the experience the bigger boys have. Yet. I wish them every success in the world.

Its a shame that after all this time PS3 has been on the market some studios have yet to grasp the PS3. That is sad! Wait for significant reviews on this game before spending any hard earned $$$.
They said PS3 is "alien" I think they are the ones who are "alien".
