Infinity Ward’s critically acclaimed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has sold over nine million copies worldwide to date, according to the latest NPD data.

“According to the NPD figures which were released today, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has officially sold over 9 Million copies worldwide since it’s release” said Infinity Ward’s Director of Communications, Robert Bowling.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare marks the series first transition to a contemporary modern day setting, featuring a host of modernised weaponry, equipment and vehicles to utilize in combat.

The game has been highly praise for its incredibly realistic visual offering, bringing to life the grim, harsh realities of urban-based combat as you infiltrate a number of highly-detailed battle zones across the globe.

Infinity Ward is currently planning to release the upcoming Variety Map Pack for the PS3 version of the game on April 24.

Even more reason to give the loyal fans some free maps, and before some smart @rse jumps up and moans about the FREE thing, i have no problem with paying for DLC at all I just feel that this game, all be it very good, seemed a bit on the skimpy side, short single player and not many multiplayer maps, especially in split screen.

I wish I knew what the heck is it that makes shooters so popular these days. Literally every month there's another shooter coming out.

I still haven't purchased Call of Duty 4 mainly because of the short campaign. Online play is alright in a game, but it can get boring doing the same thing over and over and a game has to have more than just strong Online play to convince me to buy it, a solid campaign mode is a must for me. I'll probably get Call of Duty 4 when the price drops to $39.99 at least.

i dont see many of these supposed "Online issues" :S - COD5 is going back to WWII? Seems I'm not buying it.. but i'll wait before I make that choice 100%.

When are the new maps coming out, the online is great and if ward is going back to wwII I don't think i'm getting it either; and in order to get the full experience of online you need to be in a clan and do the prestige...new maps needed!

9 million units and they still charge for DLC? I'm glad I waited for the GotY Edition.  Myabe these sales figures will keep the series from beating the dead horse that is WWII and stay with modern warfare (no pun intended).

This just shows to prove that COD5 should NOT GO BACK TO THE FREAGIN WW2 times.   Leave it at the moderm times for now. Terrible mistake by new developpers.

PS3 version hasn't topped 3 million yet, so the rest is all on 360. Such a great game as this should sell alot more on PS3. But 9 million world wide is amazing. Good job to Infinity Ward. I bet the next COD made by Treyarch won't even sell 3 mill with both consoles combined.
