Firmware 2.4 due in three weeks time; features revealed

According to reports from CVG, Sony is planning on launching its upcoming Firmware 2.4 update for the PlayStation 3 in around three weeks time, coinciding with the E3 Media and Business Summit next month.
Previous reports suggested that the update would arrive some time next week; however, according to the website’s anonymous source, this is no longer the case.
More interestingly, however, is the supposed list of final features that consumers will be able to access via the XMB when it launches.
· Friend category
· View, send, receive messages
· Manage downloads
· Set the vibration feature of the controller
· Sign in to PlayStation Network
· Register friends
· Manage Bluetooth devices
· Terminate the game
· Music category
· Use the system BGM
· Work the system BGM operation panel
· Settings category
· Assign controllers
· View profiles
· Game category
· Set audio devices
· Use the voice changer
Users will also be able to play back their own music via the XMB’s Music column, though it is currently unknown whether or not this feature will be compatible with all software, or simply those created with the most recent development tools.
Sony has yet to issue comment on any of the above, so stay tuned for any further information as it becomes available.

hmmmm i had a feeling it would (might) coincide with the E3 exhibit, makes sense. they'll be presenting it and its capabilties, and there probably be a big red button on stage infront of all media and get some sony big wig to press the button so the firmware will be available to all ps3 users (if they did this then i hope they use the natural father of the playstation!!!)

I was kind of hoping that a private chat feature would be in this list. Guess not, either way, about time. Can I wait 3 weeks? Guess I have to.

Must admit that i havent jumped on the 2.4 bandwagon hype, none of these features are really anything to write home about. I also cant se why so many people would want IG BGM, half the time if a game has music built in i turn it off or down and just have the SFX. Now what would be handy is an encoder that converts your DVD;s and Blu ray onto your PSP in one simple action or a feature that automatically turns your controller off if it hasnt been used for ages as sometimes i forget to turn it off if im folding or downloading

Thats the thing Gringo, I didn't even care if I had ingame messaging, so everything on that list is a huge bonus. Thats were people get it wrong, we don't need any of this and the fact we are getting it jsut adds more value to the already increadable system. I'll take add ons anyday, but I am happy if they just decided to never update again.

Not until it actually happens, then i'll be excited. The list looks awesome though and it's more than i expected. Bluetooth device, in game messaging and connect to the net. It was a real pain when you get disconnected or your headset gets disconnected then you have to exit the game and connect it.

Just so everyone knows, you won't be able to play your own crappy music on old titles. Just start dealing with it now so I don't have to hear you cry about it for 6 months.

@ richkaos - okay, it's not on PS3, but if you want a converter for DVD to PSP, get DVDFab Platinum for your PC. Just the job!

Can we stop with the speculative news. Unless it comes from Sony it is speculation. How many "confirmed" reports are there from "insiders" giving dates and features? I would love to see any number of these features as bad as the next person but come on. Hasn't anybody else had enough of these "confirmed" reports?

@Paranoimia Thanks for that, I have tried several over the years with mixed results, will give it a go, but i really think the ability to be able to do this on the PS3 for your blu ray films as well as dvd would be good and if all you had to do was hit copy that would me superb, plus as its specifically for the PS3 to a PSP it should be top quality (depending on your free storage)
