Polyphony Digital’s Kazunori Yamauchi took to the stage during Sony’s E3 press conference this morning and officially unveiled the long rumored Gran Turismo outing for PlayStation Portable.

Titled simply Gran Turismo PSP, Yamauchi confirmed that the portable racer will feature a whopping 800 cars, 35 tracks, and more than 60 layout variations. Those of you concerned that the handheld outing will be a down-sized iteration in the venerable franchise needn’t worry – Yamauchi confirmed the game will offer a ‘full size’ Gran Turismo experience.

Gran Turismo PSP will be released on October 1. Keep your browsers pointed to PSU for more info from Sony’s press conference as it breaks.

Online?  That may not be possible, though.

@5  GT is the most popular franchise in the world.  I think they are just holding GT5 back because of the PS3's hardware sales.  That game has to be done and waiting...

Awsome!!!! Does this all fit on a UMD though. They must really be utilizing the Dev pack unless this is download only, 2 or 3 UMDs, or low quality (highly unlikely though) Can't wait!

This is exciting news. I will definately pick this up. As predicted, GT5 is still way off, and after seeing Forza 3 at the MS conference, I'm not even gonna bother with GT5.
