Guerrilla Games: "No plans for co-op in Killzone 2"

Guerrilla Games has told PSU in an exclusive interview that there are currently no plans to implement co-op in Killzone 2.
"Currently there are no plans for co-op in Killzone 2," said game director, Mathijs de Jonge. "Technically it would be quite difficult to implement it for the story mode as for example the mission sections are loaded in seamlessly – no loading screens , and that would cause issues with teleporting players. Even without co-op it’s still a big game and gamers will have plenty to sink their teeth into."

To hear that there is no planned co-op for Killzone 2 seemed odd, as over the last few months, news has continued to point to "post release patches" or rumors of possible "four player co-op." However, after digging around, we quickly found that all stories pertaining to a co-op mode in the game were based purely on speculation, providing no evidence to back up their claims.
The biggest story that nearly every major website covered was posted in late August, stating that bots were confirmed and that a post-release patch would be adding co-op. Again, no source was provided in regards to where the information originated from.
Sad to say, it looks like those co-op dreams can be put to sleep. Still, don't let that keep you from purchasing Killzone 2. The game still has a phenomenal single-player and the multiplayer online should keep you busy for years to come. Stay tuned for our full interview later today.

I'm sure it'll still be a damn fun game though. Technically, it would be very hard to implement I'd imagine.

Zen Selai: Your right there will be some sites that will make statements like that but if it wasn't co-op it would have just been something else they would have nit picked. Overall I would have liked the feature but this is not going to have any impact on me getting this game day 1. I'm going to get over 200 hours in on the competitive multiplayer alone. The only thing that comcerns me is that they have the servers working good at launch. I hate getting a game only to be unable to play it online (remember socom).

@1
Your right. I see a whole bunch of points being taken of by some sites too.
Ask them about bioshock which has niether co op or MP and its the greatest game ever but KZ2 with an epic story and the most robust online system I have ever played.... gets a meh, its good but not as good as co op.
The sad part about it, is that I am not even joking. I expect some sites to do this.

No excuse. None. If your going to do a shooter now days it needs, almost expected to have coop. There's tons of shooters to play that do have coop so unless the single player is awesomely well done & a bag of chips then some may pass it.
The game should have been designed with coop in mind from the beginning imo. But that's just me, I'm a coop guy. I see many of you don't really care about the coop as long as you have the competitive stuff.

I am glad the concentrated on making it a better single player experience and online than introducing co-op. I am a massive fan of co-op but after the bad experience of CODwaw, it seems pointless unless you get it perfectly right.

It's a big deal to me. It looks like I'm not buying this day 1 then. I'll wait until the price drops or pick it up used. There's too many games that are skipping out on basic features like split-screen and I'm a big cooperative player.

Big deal!! I would've loved co-op, but its absence doesn't make it a bad game, of course, like it has been previously said, this will be a grappling point for reviewers for taking hits at it. But heck! CoD4 didnt't have co-op, sure, it has been some time since its release, but most of the gaming crowd place it above CoD: WaW (which has co-op)!

that pretty much s**cks IMHO and please don't be so pathetic and try to tell me that would be no big deal, I'm sure if they had it implemented everyone would go nuts about it, so you're free to express your anger about it - EVEN THOUGH KZ2 is going to rock in every possible way :)

I am super bummed on no coop, online death matches and ctf, get old real fast. This is starting to look like a rental. No single player campaign in a fps is ever any good.

After reading some of the posts in here, I just got so angry I had to post again. I love that most of us are willing to overlook that fact that a MAJOR feature, that is basically a requirement to have a good FPS is being left out of this game. It can look absolutely gorgeous , but if Im playing by myself it sucks. Dont call me a troll, but this has killed my killzone 2 sex drive.

I could care less about co-op on this title. If I want to play with someone, I will play over PSN. I like that they even included bots so you could play deathmatch's even if you don't have a connection. It's just a neat bonus, and more than makes up for no co-op.

easy there juanvaldez, you'll give yourself an aneurysm, co-op would of been a great feature for them to add but most people don't care for it and don't want the game to be delayed just to add this feature. pfff, please, we've waited long enough to have to wait longer for "CO-OP" to be added, ZOMG KILLZONE IS NOW TEH EPIC FAILLLZZZZ becaz NO CO-OP.

Most of you are missing the main point. The problem isn't that there's "no co-op". The problem is that there's no splitscreen-multiplayer AT ALL. So when one of your friends come over you're forced to take the game out and play madden, or COD4-- which makes this game has very little replay value for most people such as myself. This is why I'll be renting this game like just like bioshock, dead space, mirrors edge and everything else with crappy multiplayer options.(not saying they're bad games, they just lack options)

I have little to no interest in FPS games that don't have co-op. So, Killzone 2 will have to have some serious gameplay for me to buy it.

So wait CoD4 had co-op? why wasnt I told this??? oh wait becuase it dosent. Yeah it's got split scree ofline death match but that's all, and it still went on to provide not only one of the greatest singleplayer campaigns in the history of FPS but also kick majorass in multiplayer and that's without bots. So dont start spouting bull. Yes it would have been awesome to have it but it dosent so get over it already.

@toastaroasta
the article only talks about the single player mode not having co-op. do you have a source to any other info about the online multiplayer not having splitscreen? i'd be a little peeved about it not having split screen in online multiplayer than the story mode.

so what if it doesnt have co-op, i play a game for myself. occasionaly i play with someone else. enjoy the game for what it is and play it, not everygame is going to have what you want. to me it would be a nice addition to the experience but its not a huge thing that will stop me from enjoying the game.

@Alpha2 I never said COD4 had co-op, but it had a option for splitscreen muliplayer, which made it fun for me to whoop my friends a$s$ on it.
@MMDs- Well I assume it doesn't have any splitscreen at all because in the interview they said the game was too graphically intense to make splitscreen possible(that applies to all parts of the game including online mode).

@toastaroasta
please read it again:
"PSU: Last August, it was rumored that Killzone 2 would feature some form of cooperative support, though no details were given on when it would be added and how many players could play together. What can you tell us about the co-op mode, and do you have any estimates on when it will be released?
MdJ : Currently there are no plans for co-op in Killzone 2, technically it would be quite difficult to implement it for the STORY MODE as for example the mission sections are loaded in seamlessly – no loading screens , and that would cause issues with teleporting players. Even without co-op it’s still a big game and gamers will have plenty to sink their teeth into."that shouldn't be an issue with the online multiplayer so i don't see why online wouldn't have splitscreen and they don't talk about the online anywhere in that interview, so don't give your hopes up until they actually say splitscreen is not included in online mode.

Seeing that I am not into competitive online but do enjoy some good co-op like R2 this is just 1 more reason to wait for the price to drop and not to get it day 1. Seeing that the campaign is 10 hours and I can probably stretch that to about 15 with really exploring the levels but that is basically what I would get for 60 bucks, 15 hours at most.
Kind of disappointing especially seeing it has been in development for 4 years now. To much emphasis on graphics strikes again with a short game that will have no replay value for me. Whatever happened to the emphasis being on game play & story?

I am excited about the graphics of this game, and have been defending the PS3 from all the xbot fans I know for years. But the fact is, if the game only supports a single player campaign, and online deathmatch/ctf it will never the amazing game I was hoping for. I hate to say it, because killzone is supposed to be the holy grail of the ps3, but they have been working on this title for over 3 years, WTF have they been doing everyday? Getting together and talking about how to make the pixel shaders look better, and add more dynamic lighting. Sounds like the classic (game looks sweet, but plays like crap) scenario. I am still stunned by the videos of this game, but lets be honest the weapons are nothing amazing, yeah they are realistic, but they dont seem fun. Which leaves, the 10 hour campaign and the online deathmatch. Im sure Ill end up getting the game, but Im embarrassed that I wont be able to talk smack to my xbot friends about it being the best fps on a console. Ill stick with Resistance 2 for online.

Personally I will no longer ever bother purchasing this game. I may hire the game out to finish the single player in a day or so, but no amount of pretty graphics warrant the dismissal of a major console game benefit IMO. If I just wanted a pretty looking game I would play PC games which look superior. Oh well good luck Gurilla, I hope it still sells well.
