The time has begun.

How does those figures stack up against Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Halo 3?

Konami will be pretty ticked off if it does not sell as good as Halo 3 on Xbox 360 and Super Smash Bros on the Wii. With all the marketing build up and considering that this is the big title for PS3 they have a lot riding on this and should expect to break some sales records.

So far no way near as many as GTA and yes i know GTA was multi platform

I think that's the problem @richkaos - GTA results make publishers want to do cross platform and not do PS3 exclusives anymore.

Konami probably should have released on xbox 360 and PC as well and then they could have made more money and broaden the MGS fan base for the future.

Anyway, I hope the sales ramp up over the next month and encourage Konami to make another episode.

@chubacca, if they put it on the x360 as well kojima wouldn't have been able to do as much as he did, he's already stated this himself.

How many copies of Halo 3 were sold in japan on first day? Do you really think that is an issue? You do realize this is japan we are talking about.

In japan super mario galaxy sold 251k in first WEEK. Even dynasty warriors 6 had a better opening. But mario kart wii also sold 300k first day.

Not only is this good info this doesn't paint the full picture because MGS has always sold better in the western markets.

in japan alone. keep in mind a million sales is a huge accomplisment there. in one day it's achieved 25% of that so far. later we have to look at the US and UK sales numbers as well as the number of the bundle sales.

and remember, this doesn't include bundles

It wont sell as many as Halo 3. Halo 3 had way more hype and MS had a lot more consoles sold ytd at that time then Sony. MGS4 will do above average, but not great numbers.

After playing for jsut a few hours I can truley say if this game doesn't make you want a PS3 then I don't know what else would. 300k in one day is amazing for just japan.

Awesome sales in Japan.  Should hit 450,000-500,000 first week sales in Japan easily, especially with the bundles...Probably at least another 750,000 in US and 750,000 in EU...so it should do over 2,000,000 copies worldwide first week.

Call of Duty 4 and Assassin's Creed didn't even manage 500,000 copies ww on the ps3 their first week to give you a comparison.

this is japan so 300k in day one is great, halo and gta did not do and can not do aswell in japan. for nintendo games though thats a different matter. this is good for ps3 but doesnt compare with psp, ds and wii top games.

300k is very good for Japan only! But still opening day is nothing. Let's look at the week and then we see the big picture.

Remember guys this is the sales without the different bundles in Japan and the US. And this is only Japan, and not the rest of the world. This game have really sold many copies in just one day! 

Just thought i'd meantion halo 3 sold 45,000 copies on its first day in japan. just to those who say it wouldn't outsell halo 3..

300k in one day in Japan seems to be a lot. It will reach 700k in a week in Japan for sure. If this sells another 300k in Us and another 300k in EU first day, it will make almost 1mil in 1 day. That's a lot for an exclusive title.

Thats a huge guess. Normally sales taper off quite quickly in japan. I would be impressed if this title had staying power. MGS has mainly been popular outside of japan.

it took super smash bros to sell 2 million in the first 2 weeks. when it hits that number in that time, then we'll be amazed =P

Good good.  It's such a good game and so sad. It deserves to sell a lot.

Now the rest of the world and overall might be differently. But this is an intelligent game afterall..... It takes some getting into.

not counting bundles i think is pretty substantial. it seemed to me that best buy sold quite a few more bundles than stand alone copies of the game, either LE or normal. but who knows if that's the larger trend at this point.

trust me t his will have record breaking sales and no if they hadnt kept this game exclusive it would not be as good as it is

im glad it sold this much. i still need to pick up my copy. and this is not including the bundles, these are great numbers. man i wish i had saved the money i used to buy gta 4 and used it on this instead. i wonder how mucj it sold in the good ol' U.S, and EU.

this is great in the long run i can see mgs breaking a good number over a million, plus the game is just great. If you have a ps3 you owe it to yourself to play it

mgs4 is amazing i will probably be buying it and the essentials bundle with 1-3 because i have never played them. mgs4 makes me want to buy all of them and play them through. ps3 will be on top again soon. i just want to say that the the bundles sold out on amazon in a few minutes, remember it overloaded their servers.

Well M$ may have had more consoles when they released Halo 3 ( I bought halo 3 legendary edition and trust me that game was a piece of x-creh-ment), but the fact is that MGS 4 Has Sold More consoles than any other game on any other platform.... Besides Blu-Ray's versatility its showing right now.  if developers get to work on PS3 power, versatility and media storage capabilities... the PS3 would have been unbeatable.  But unfortunately as 95% of the people do... everyone loves to do things the easy way.  This is a business after all and if they can make money developing for the 360... which to what i believe it is easier than to develop for the PS3, well why stress on making a game the hard way, but what they dont know is that they are compromising quality and lenght and trust me... Paying 60+ bucks for a game that looks pretty but its just 10 hours long its just ridiculous.... People we are being robbed,.... im no fanboy but i did not payed 500+ on this console so that developers use the 360 to develop a game with limited media capabilities (DVD) and us knowing that we can get more we dont get it....Example of this... GTA 4... And i believe that GTA 4 on the ps3 alone would have been a better bigger badder more croud pleasing game...than what it ended up being... a Half-Baked GTA Game...

I totally agree with you. This is the quality we get when a game is made exclusively for the ps3.Multi patform games are those that suffer fro bugs and graphic issues.Since the 360 is easier to develop for, most developers turn to treat it as the lead console.Now lets wait and see if anyone complains of any bug or graphic issues about mgs4.

This jus goes to confirm what i have always believed; only ps3 exclusive titles will show the world the true capability of the ps3. MGS4 has made its impact, now let's wait for KILLONE 2 and the mighty GOD OF WAR 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just got to end of act 3 i though act 1 wasnt that great but act 2 and 3 were brilliant the cutscne at end of act 3 was stunning! cant wait for next act play tmrw tho

Thats quite good for the devs, which it needed to reach a certain amount of copies in first day, it may not reach the GTA IV units lol.

I can't wait to see world-wide numbers if MGS4 sold like that in Japan. :-) Personally, I expected it to sell like crazy... so I am more interested in reading how many extra PS3's it might have helped sell.

This is my first MGS game, and I am really loving it (I'm in early act 3)... and I really thing every PS3 owners should get it, including those like me who might normally pass on games like this.

I do not understand why people feel it will not sell as many copies as Halo 3.

1. There are three main selling points of the world for gamers-North America, Europe, Japan.

The Xbox brand only has an appeal in two of those areas whereas the Playstation brand has a substantial appeal in all three of those areas.

There may have been more 360s out, but  the PS3 has more of a WORLDWIDE appeal and bundles will count in sales. Let's be honest, this was thee game that many were waiting for(Japan and US) to get the PS3.

This 300,000 in Japan does not include Bundles.

I work at a Best Buy in Maryland. No one had any Bundles left June 12 after 3 O'Clock at the very very latest. My store recieved 30 on June 12 and they were all gone in three hours.

If Sony can do a better job of putting the bundle out than Nintendo does putting out Wii's(Though I suspect they do it on purpose to carry interest in the system), they may be able to sell a large amount.

You guys make me laugh - all I said was that Konami wants to make money and if sales dont match other similar titles with similar investments (like GTA 4) they might consider multi platform next time around. Some of you guys heaped crap on me for saying that? - Wankers. You guys are too touchy about that subject.
