It’s been another quiet week on the Japanese hardware front, with the latest Media Create data showcasing a dip in sales across all major platforms for the week ended June 14 with the exception of Wii and Xbox 360.
Microsoft’s machine in particular saw a spike in sales edging it closer to PlayStation 3, which managed to shift just north of 10,000 units. PSP managed to clock in at second place behind the DS, though sales were down from the previous week for both machines.
See below for the full numbers.
DS - 42,280
PSP - 26,904
Wii - 18,442
PS3 - 10,009
Xbox 360 - 8,015
PS2 - 3,498

this was not a good week for sony in japan. 6 month lows for both ps3 and psp, and lowest sales of all time for the ps2...not to mention that this marks the 1 year anniversary of MGS4, which cut the PS3 YoY gain in half, so now they are only tracking about 50k above last year, as opposed to about 100k last week...

While sales are obviously abysmal on all fronts, I hardly see this as a case of 360 closing in on the PS3. It's just not losing as much compared to the PS3. This time of year is drought time so I kind of expect sales to be abysmal on all fronts. It will pick up come the end of August and into September.

This is nice but not so suprising as the PSP has had tremendous success in Japan and mediocre elsewhere. Seeing as Sony are based there (as well as Ninty) would be one of many reasons why, plus the fact the Japanese have a healthy penchant for gadgets. Good on them!
Personally I gave up caring about who'll be the bestseller a long while ago when it came to the 360. Each console has a different demograph and while they'll merge in the middle sometimes with their own exclusive RPG/FPS/Online Multiplayer, it doesn't matter to me at the end of the day who wins because I've made my choice with Sony and I'm happy with what I've got and not lowering myself to the masses of "my console is better than yours"

i h8 to say it again but the ps3 has been a disaster so far with more lows than highs, i just can't see why tho....its a great piece of kit and has lots of potential. polyphony digital...pull ya finger out and get GT5 on shop shelves, can't you see that sony need something big to make a better impression? i mean come on, its not like UNCHARTED 2, HEAVY RAIN, MAG etc are gonna make the ps3 sell any better than it already is are they.

If sony were to price drop the system $100 it would probably outsell 360 everywhere including the US. I'm not saying they should because I know Sony knows what they are doing. PS3 has always sold for $200 more than the 360.

Yeah its not looking great for the PS3, but then again, who cares? So what if the 360 edges out the PS3 this gen--doesn't mean that we should all throw away our PS3s. I owned an orginal xbox last gen, and I loved it--even though it had less games and eventually lost the gen war.

@9
It's people like you that make me proud to be a PlayStation 3 owner. There are always people babbling on about this console war, but in my opinion, Sony's super-console is the best machine and always will be. All consoles have their advantages, or they'd never sell, but personally, I think the PlayStation is the superior machine, regardless of this console war, and am therefore satisfied that I'm a proud owner of the gaming system of my choice, as well as being proud of the fact that there are also people like you that support it.
@14
Such similar consoles as the Xbox and PlayStation had more than just hardware differences. They each have many exclusive titles that are carrying their name. Without exclusives, the only difference would be the hardware itself, but software designed specifically for the PS3 is something you won't find anywhere else, so yes, exclusives such as Uncharted, Heavy Rain, MAG and God of War wiil sell more consoles, especially nearer their time of release.

pretty petty altogether anyway. The 360 shipped a whopping 8,000 units. So at that pace for the year they will have shipped 384,000 or so units. That is horrendous.
Also this is the summer months of a recession. Get ready to see all time lows in a ton of areas. Japans economy is in big trouble and the US economy is going to be in trouble for the next decade thanks to Obama so just get ready and hope Sony doesn't need a government bailout soon lol. Could you imagine the government owning a videogame console maker? Who, scary.
Seriously though, numbers are not suprising or worriesome to me. Low console sales during the summer are a guarantee. But during a worldwide recession? I'm surprised at 10,000 and 8,000.

@23... thanks to Bush and Obama. If the interest rates weren't so damn easy during Bush's tenure we wouldn't have a lot of the problems we do now. Free market FTW! But I digress...
Can't wait to see the numbers for the PS3 when FFXIII comes out. Should be very impressive. Also very impressive to see the 360 doing so well without any big name titles getting released.

23, you are taking 360 sales say out of context. 380k/year would be a REALLY good year for the 360. its simply not on the same sales scale as the PS3 or wii. the 360 has been outsold 2:1 by the ps3 this year, does that mean the 360 is doing 'bad'? no it doesnt, cause this is by FAR its best year ever.

@9, I'm with you with all you stated. I picked the best console for me, not what everybody else wants me to buy. At my job there is this die hard 360 fan, Almost everyday he keeps telling me that 360 is catching up with sales, 360 has this game but PS3 doesn't and We just got another PS3 exclusive. But then I ask him, Do you have a built in Blu-Ray? How much did you pay for that HD-DVD attachment? How much do you pay to play online? and the best question I had asked him was, isn't this your 5th 360? and you just bought 2 new games and can't play them. Complete Silence.

The week FFXIII demo released PS3 sales were like 60k for that week alone, ever since then it's gotten worse.
Rorona and Blazblue release next week so hopefully it could reach around 20k sales.
When FFXIII full releases this Winter console numbers should be around 100k+ for that week and the game should sell around 1mil on the opening week and even a small chance of it making 1.5-2 mil...
.In Japan alone it's got a small chance of selling more then Uncharted 2 will worldwide which is pretty crazy.
Imagine this-
FFXIII + PS3 FFXIII slim bundle + PS3 price drop + Christmas period sales rush :D

webshark! I think I know what the deal is the 360. It's true that it's doing pretty good and true that YOY sales are up considerably but let's not take this article out of context. The 360 is still being outsold. The difference is, it's not being outsold by as much of a margin as usual. Needless to say, 360 is doing pretty good for Japan!

Fantastic, PS3 was #1 on Japan and Europe and it's only goal in 2008 was to reach the number of 360 on America. Now in America is a diiiiistant thrid and it's begining to fall even on Europe and Japan (in those places they used to eat, breathe and sh*** PS).
