MGS 4: Last of the great exclusives?

After losing key exclusive titles such Devil May Cry 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV, Sony continues to hold on to one of the last great exclusive titles in it's arsenal in the form of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
The fact that the game has remained exclusive, and continues to be for the PlayStation 3 only should prove instrumental in helping to boost the adoption rate of the console.
"We're telling our fans that if you want to play 'Metal Gear Solid 4', you have to buy a PS3," said Ryan Payton, the assistant producer of the game. "The PlayStation brand has always been good to us, and we're pretty bullish on the PS3."
Because of the high development cost of current-gen games, most publishers prefer to release a game on various platforms in order to try to recover the largest amount of profit, throwing exclusivity out the window.
"We understand publishers are needing to recoup their investment," said Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Sony. "From our perspective, as long as the games aren't going exclusive to other platforms, PS3 gamers are not actually losing anything."
To counter third party developers and their releasing multi-platform games, Sony has ramped up their in house development studios to produce high quality, exclusive, first party games.
The company currently has 15 development studios working on games, more than Microsoft and Nintendo combined, Dille stated, and he also expects there to be 15 PS3 exclusive title to be release between September 2007 to April 2008.

I think the GTA series will come back to the Sony camp after this release. I also think that crapcom will end up coming back as Sony exclusive for DMC. Now that sales have shown they are here to stay, and the devs have a handle on the programming, the PS3 will start to get more love.

If 3rd party exclusive go the way of the dodo then '''' we win. Sony, Nintendo, and Macrosoft will just have to make better 1st party games to sway buyers to their system. Worst case scenario would be future multi platform games like FFXIV being graphically inferior and half as long as FFXIII (If FF goes multi plat).

I'm sorry but games like Final Fantasy just can't go multi-platform. Yes, it's true that the development process of games are getting longer and more expensive with each passing generation. But there's a way to offset that. Let's take Final Fantasy as an example:
Square-Enix loves to take their time with making heavy-hitting titles like their Final Fantasy [Insert Roman Numeral here] or Kingdom Hearts franchise. But between the releases of those franchises, what does Square-Enix do? They release other games, exclusively, to other consoles. Between KH1 and KH2, they had Chain of Memories on the Nintendo DS. Between the Final Fantasy games, what came out? Chocobo Racing, Tactics, spin-offs like FFX-2, FFVII Dirge of Cerberus, and others.
These are successful in their own respects. (Some, admittedly, aren't as successful as others.) And these titles have all made Square-Enix a great deal of money for minimal cost. Every major developer who makes the major franchises we know and love each has their own "minor projects" that make them a lot of money.
Exclusivity from Third Party developers won't stop. Konami and Square-Enix, no matter how much they love their money, know that they're two of the best developers for, and only for, the benchmark quality of their games. And they have the quality of their games because of their dedication to one format.
Sure, the next exclusive games from these developers may not be on our chosen platform, but you can bet that it'll come, and it'll be great. Just to re-iterate, Games Exclusivity from third party developers won't end. They drive the market.
(Note: I emphasize that I'm speaking about **Third Party Developers**, as is the article. I do not count the First and Second Party developer and games.)

just imagining games like mgs4 or ff13 running on wii or even xbox360 makes me wan't to throw-up, these consoles just don't have the capacities to have titles of this quality that is why sony with their ps3 will once again show to the world that they are number 1. wait and see!

anyway, when sony exclusive games go onto other platformes they don't have the same impact when they cime out on ps , plus games that are made on multi platforme always have problems, if they're gonna make a game for every platforme they should make the game especially for each platform so that the game is sure to use the maximum of potential of each console

the reason gta is taking so long to make is because of that darn 360 because the developers have to compress all that coolness on the PSN account name MUSTANG750R

And dont forget Getaway 3 and 8 Days. there is a lot of games to be made in the future, why all people complain like if all the games for this generation are already announced?
Edit: And GTA never was a Sony exclusive. Maybe timed exclusive.

This game will sell loads of ps3’s but i think it won't remain exclusive it will come out on ps3 i think first and then i'd say after about six months of it being released on ps3 they will anounce it on xb360, although the ps3 is doing well and good luck to sony, but there is not enough money to be made on ps3 because like i said it's doing ok now but genrally speaking sony has had a very bad year i think it will go mult, it has to make a decent profit and the rumours circling also point to this but after it comes out on ps3.

Dont forget Tekken. Its one of the major third party titles that has stuck with sony and ONLY sony since day 1. (with the exeption of a flash based tekken 3 on one of the gameboys)
Tekken 6 ftw. That last boss is huuge :p Gonna be great.. On topic though i doubt third party exclusives will completely dissapear. As also stated by others, its one of the major factors that drives the buisness.

I don't see 3rd party exclusives going the way of the dodo Tom, but i do agree that trend will slowly decline. As long as these three companies (Nintendo, Microsoft and SONY) have big dollars theres bound to be some money thrown at these companies to keep their title exclusive. I also think it's a given that Sony has the best exclusives coming to their system. I don't even have to name them even the fanboys of the other system drools about them.

Ok, so where is the next installment of SOCOM a PS3 "exclusive title". It's been over a year and I've heard NOTHING about Socom Confrontation since May or June. What's the deal Sony?

Well, Sony is always going to have the best 1st party games. Microsoft game studios are really weak right now, no more bungie, no more bioware( well i guess microsoft didnt own bioware, but now that EA owns them whats going to happen to ME2.)
Also Sony still has Final Fantasy XIII & Final Fantasy Versus XIII after MGS:4 and the nest franchise made by Rockstar remember. O ya also LA Noire.

That's not true...as long as it's not going exclusive to other platform...Playstation fans are still missing out...We're then getting a less quality product being dumbed down by the 360 version....But like the Sony rep said: We have more than M$ and Nintendo combined...That's all that counts. And MGS4 being some of the last exclusives? LOL. Exclusives will always come. Even if it takes Sony buying them.

Exactly. I dont think this article is a very good one. Why? Because we still have Final Fantasy titles and then there are the new IPs which are lookin great, i.e. LittleBigPlanet.
