MLB 08: The Show Review

Posted on March 9th, 2008 at 13:28 EDT
The Show is a fantastic one-of-a-kind experience that is unrivaled in sports gaming. Astounding authenticity is present in all aspects of the title. It is a must own for anyone who loves baseball and for the casual fan at heart as well.
Pros
  • + Very fluid gameplay
  • + Realistic hitting experience
  • + Fantastic Road to the Show improvements
Cons
  • - Online is a bit buggy
  • - Poor collision detection

Last year’s graphics seemed to be the sure low point of the title, but this is no longer one of our concerns. The game not only looks great, but the gameplay is smooth as well at a consistent 60 frames per second. Player models look solid and there are absolutely no awkward looking cloth effects. One disappointing element is the lack of collision detection. Players often run through one another and we’ve even seen an outfielder literally run through a wall after making a catch. Things like this shouldn’t be popping up in this generation of gaming.

The stadium models look fantastic and even the minor league stadiums are beautifully rendered. Finally, the animation department did a fantastic job as everything comes across very fluid and finished. There seems to be nothing to complain about in that respect.

As for the commentary, it’s on point as well. The calls are spot on and you always feel like you’re taking part in the real thing. Outside of commentary, The Show offers a rocking soundtrack as well. They’ve chosen to mix a lot of the old school tracks with some new school songs to give it a balanced experience overall. Listening to the soundtrack play in the background isn’t annoying whatsoever and we thank SCE San Diego for putting it together.

In the end, MLB 08: The Show is the equivalent of a homerun in the bottom of the ninth with bases loaded and two out. There is nothing in the world that can match that accomplishment and there is no sports gaming experience that can match this one.

Best baseball game ever.  I can't stop playing.  Best of all, it's a Sony exclusive!!!

Easily the best sports game on the market. I put it a step above NHL 08. Like previously said, this game is a Sony exclusive so we will have this game for a long time...Unless EA does go through and buys 2K and then buys up the MLB license...which I could see happening but I hope doesn't. Damn you EA...

I don't play sports games but I'm glad this is exclusive for the Sony baseball fans. Looks really good visually. One of the best looking sports games I've seen. Looks like Sony is on the right road to get the best rated games for 2008. With GOW Chains of Olympus, The Show, and Hot Shots getting great reviews. (I'm assuming it will)

I own this game and I am here to tell you if anyone is on the bubble of whether to buy MLB 2k8 or MLB 08 the show, you have got to get MLB the show! It is the most realistic baseball game out there! This is another solid lineup out of the Sony camp. If anyone wants to play me let me know!

man them graphs look pretty amazing i thought i was looking at sum real life pics there, just shows what a game can be if its a ps3 exclusive and just more reason not to develop for 360 since everything would have to be brought down to its level.

mlb 08 is the greates sports game out yet and i agree with ljwinter ea sports is probably cringing from the lost revenue possibilities and are out as we speak scheming on how to buy out 2k baseball and then monopolize the mlb players assoc and then put out mediocre games that people will buy not because of the quality but because of the real players in the game just like the madden series

The best baseball iv'e ever played, mainly because the frame rate don't stutter so you can get more done with out feel that you missed a play because the frame rate.(2K6,7,8).
