Microsoft hasn't reached beyond FPS fans, says Sony

Posted on March 6th, 2008 at 08:05 EDT

Sony’s Scott Steinberg has said that Microsoft has failed to capitalize on its one-year lead over the PlayStation 3, stating that the Xbox 360 has been unsuccessful in its attempts to “reach beyond the core first person shooter player.”

"The time that they had to create huge distance and build a massive install base before the PS3 could really take root; that opportunity is over and there's no real capitalization of it," said Steinberg, Vice President of Product Marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA)

"They had a great crescendo moment with Halo and it helped catapult them into a pretty strong position towards the back end of last year, but they were still within a stone's throw of where they were with the original Xbox”, he continued.

"To me that speaks of a failure to broaden their reach beyond the core first person shooter player who was in their back pocket for Xbox.”

As such, Steinberg feels that Sony is in no danger of having shares swept from under its feet, adding, "The question for us is 'are they really going after the PS2 demographic? Are they stealing share from us?' And the answer is no."

Finally, he then pointed to the PlayStation 2’s worldwide installed base, referring to it as the company’s “secret weapon” in terms of users making the transition to the next-generation with the PlayStation 3.

"That's the secret weapon, that's what goes unreported. It's this 41 million universe of PS2 owners that will be targeted very, very soon to upgrade to a PS3 Blu-ray machine," he concluded.

Do I hear a price drop coming soon to get those ps2 players moving to ps3? I initially was ashamed of having bought a PS3 after getting a Xbox 360 since the PS3 was getting dusty. But now Sony has made a amazing comeback and has recovered month by month.

still waiting on littlebigplanet, metal gear, killzone, god of war, wipeout, home and gran turismo aint even gonna make it in 2008 its pushed back to 2009 in europe oh and at least xbox has RTS games i would have loved command and conquer for my ps3, ps3 will win i think but its gonna take another year before sony can claim a victory, but i hope they do!

Actually I think Sony is right in this one. Microsoft really only excels at first person shooters, where Sony has all kinds of game genres. And now when PS3 has surpassed Xbox 360 in worldwide sales, their statement of Xbox 360 only having 1 year of lead is indeed true.

And it's nice to see Sony attack Microsoft. Microsoft has been the agressor all the time, so it's nice to see Sony bites back.

PS3s best genre's are third person games. Whether its shooting, action, adventure or RPG. I feel at home when I play a 3rd person game on a playstation controller..... and also any 2D fighters.

@NeutralMilkAjC The only good games are FPS's, huh? You play Eye of Judgement or Uncharted or the #1 baseball game three years running, MLB the show? It sounds like you are the demographic he was talking about. I've been saying this for EVER. NA gamers have shifted back to western gamer tastes. Remember this, when people say "PS3 has no games", what they're really saying is "PS3 doesn't release a FPS game a month like the X360 does". Thisis why I got rid of my 360...they had the PERFECT opportunity to be the "everything box" but stuck to being "the back up console for primary PC players". Yeah, there are a lot of people like that, but I'm not one of them.

What the heck is a "sci-fi simulator"? Anyway, I've always felt that the PS brand represented gamers with broader tastes. I play everything. The BEST of everything. Yeah, I play COD4, but you wouldn't catch me dead on Resistance or Unreal. I've always gave people the advice of if you want mindless bullets, by all means, go green and get an Xbox. No fanboy junk...I just know those types will be happier there.

Its true, they have failed to reach beyond the first person shooter player. I think this will come back to haunt Mr. Scott Steinberg. And I agree with 'killercop', Sony does have a lot of genres were Microsoft only really speicialize in FPS henre.

lol i love when Sony fight back... for too long has Microsoft criticised other companies. Im not gonna lie; i own a 360. I only own it cause there are some cool exclusives on it, but when it comes to whos the better of the two - and who actually knows what they're talking about - Sony with the PS3 have the upper hand. Blu-ray is gonna skyrocket within the next couple of years (2008-2009) and things are gonna be a looooot different. 10.5+ million already.. the PS3 is catching up RADILY.

Don't get me wrong, I think Sony's line-up is much more diverse than Microsoft's, however I can't completely agree. I've spent about 40 hours in Mass Effect, 50 in Dead Rising, can't wait for Gears 2, and Just got Lost Odysee. I love gaming and can't be completly brand loyal, but if I had to pick a side I'd definately go with Sony. This year should especially be great as they continue to reach out to a broader audience.

I think I hear a price drop for ps2 players to move to ps3s. or some type of incentive that would be great. The only thing is if they do offer sometype of discount that ps3 would have to have backward play with ps2 games, the reason I say that is because most ps2 owners are not going to want to get some type of trade in deal to get a ps3 because they still play ps2 games. Yall know what I mean, in other words if I had a ps2 and have not gotten a ps3 because of backward compatibility a trade in would not want to make me trade my ps2 for a ps3.

SPOT ON - Only SCE WWS have a wide variety of genre QUALITY games in development that will stay exclusive. And there's still more games to be announced and PROPERLY shown (Eight Days etc). Microsoft didn't even bother to support the Live Vision camera with good software and this much later it doesn't look like they will, it's like they were just ticking off a list of peripherals to release. You can be sure some more EyeToy Play like games - and better will be announced in the coming months.

I totally agree. I was wondering when someone would point out the Xbox 360's weakness. It's weakness is that the 360 only appeals to hardcore gamers that like FPS. Sony has always had a diverse line up of successful game titles.

Sony has released several brand new game IP's (Uncharted, Lair, Resistance Heavenly Sword, etc..) but all Microsoft does is keep coming out with more shooters. The only successful brand new game IP released by Microsoft with the 360 is Gears of War and Mass Effect. Sony is way more innovative than Microsoft Game Studios will ever be. Microsoft knows that it's fanboys love shooters, and they are just going to keep on releasing more and more shooters.

I suppose that's fair comment. Although the 360 isn't just FPS, it does exceed in them and I personally prefer playing FPS games on the 360 controller. Although don't forget games like Mass Effect, Gears of War, PGR 3&4, Splinter Cell DA, Viva Pinata and Forza 2 aren't FPS and they were big hits.

I tend to buy all other genres on my PS3 such as GH3, PES 08, Fifa 08 and I'm planning on buying GTA IV on it too. This is because I prefer the PS controller for these type of games. So I guess a lot of it comes down to the 2 different controllers for me.

What he's saying speaks the truth, Microsoft haven't reached beyond gamers who are true to the xbox and mainly play FPS. He doesn't say that the 360 only has FPS's.
We all know that there are some other games that are not FPS's for the 360, but the majority of 360 gamers are hardcore, and play mainly FPS's. Microsoft has had their year head start and only sold 360's to the gamers who bought the original xbox, Microsoft haven't sold 360's to any other crowds. So who else is there to buy 360's? That minority of 360 owners are going to or already have looked at another console. PS3 owners really haven't got much of a reason to look at the 360 because the PS3 has FPS's and a big viariety of genres. The odd big game like Gears, Halo and Mass Effect isn't enough to entice gamers as they are very much hardcore games and a few of these hardcore games isn't enough, even for the hardcore gamer. I think it was Phil Harison that said it isn't about the killer app but the killer library and 2008 shows that the PS3 will have this killer library while 360 will just have a killer app, Gears 2.

@neutralMilKa
What ever!

@haynsey
C&C is good but the joypad controls don't work for me on the 360. Its much better to get this game on PC. Don't forget that C&C red alert 3 is scheduled for 360 and PS3. Hopefully they will add mouse support for PS3.

@staticneuron
I wouldn't say 3rd person genres but more that its a 3rd person perspective as you mention, shooting, action, RPG, adventure, they are different genres with just the same perspective. 360 has 1st person perspective that all seem to be shooters and thats the FPS genre even their 3rd person games are shooters. Take Mass Effect, I bet most used the soldier class so they can spend their time shooting.

I'm glad Sony finally said it because they're saying what we ALL know is true. Without halo the 36* would be nothing. Sony fans play RPGs, Sports, Action/Adventure games, Quirky Japanese games, M$ had a year to grab these types of games and market them hard and al they did was play up their 50 dollar a year live money pit which is only popular because people play Halo against other people with it. 3 to 5 very High profile RPGs came out for it and only they sold half as well as they would have if they were on a Sony console. In japan some of those RPGs were made by the biggest names in the last generation and they still did crap numbers.

Sony's Right M$ has dont a horrible job of reaching beyond FPSers.

Ummm... Thats the pot calling the kettle black.

Sony needs to get a proper selection of games out before opening their mouths with this stuff. I walk into any Game store, EA store, or other software shop and all  I see is a little display of PS3 games squeezed between a wall of Xbox 360, PS2 and Wii games. Of the PS3 games available I could have purchased most new releases a few months earlier and for less money (but with the same or better content) on XBox 360. Seriously dudes the constant delays, cancelations, lack of home lack of game choice and the s.hitty frame rate hassles is really starting to bite. These lame announcements dont help it just adds salt to injury.

Less talking - more action. Lets see those good games now.
