PC/PS3 cross-play seems unlikely for The Agency

Posted on February 13th, 2008 at 12:38 EDT

CEO John Smedley has given his views and opinions in regards to the possibility of cross-play for The Agency with PC users and PlayStation 3 users. Unsurprisingly he finds it unlikely that this will happen due to several reasons given below. Smedley sat down and spoke with Next Gen Biz about the upcoming title and the issues revolving around the ability to allow cross-platform play, here are some of the things he had to say:

“If I was a betting man, I’d bet that we don’t allow it,” said Smedley of cross-platform play. “You’ll still be able to log in with your character on either [PS3 or PC].”

Despite that opinion, SOE still plans on attempting a testing stage where the cross-play is given the opportunity to be proven beneficial. Chances are it won’t due to the probably advantage that keyboard and mouse players will have over console owners just using a standard controller. Another example of this is Unreal Tournament III, where a plethora of players choose to use the keyboard and mouse combo over the controller it usually has its obvious advantages.

“We’re going to start play-testing that soon, but I’ll be honest: I think that our expectations are that we’re going to decide that we won’t have cross-platform play, simply because of the difference in [control schemes]. Would the mouse player have a unique advantage? Would we have to make the auto-aiming system on the console a lot better to compensate for that? That would take some of the skill element away on the console. I’m guessing it’s going to be where you can log into your character on either platform, but they don’t cross-play. But we are honestly going to give it a try.”

Another big-time player in the MMO genre is NC Soft. Their North American boss, Chris Chung, feels that it wouldn’t be a plausible choice to cross-platform an MMO in general, "...Personally, I don’t really believe that you could build a top notch game play that really works across platforms.”

Obviously as PlayStation owners, a lot of us have experienced the cross-play of Final Fantasy XI and it worked for the majority of the experience on a great level. So this issue can be worked on and made beneficial to the gamer, however, to a standardized shooter game like The Agency is shaping up to be, it obviously is appearing to be a lot more difficult.

I'd rather not play against PC users or Xbox360 users. Basicly for the pure fact that there are many more hacks/cheaters on those systems. My lil cousin who had a 360 since launch and bought cod4, just bought a ps3, and cod4 ps3 version cause all of the cheaters on xboxlive

I think I get it. FFXI wasn't an action based game where as the other examples are. There are probably to many factors concerning theplayers and the system that can go wrong.

why not include mouse support? I can understand why the wouldnt it would be to much of a hassle to have diffrent servers dedicated to k/m and controller. I can see why it would be stupid but i cant wait for this game to come out. and @ Enacku they never promised it would hace pc/ps3 play so im not sure what your all dissapointed about.

psn id: gingo... i dont see a reason for cross platform play if they price this right a very large number of ps3 owners will want this title and it will have enough people

i personly prefer and find it easier to play a FPS using a controller over a keyboard and mouse cos that's what i'm used to, i hate it when people say keyboard and mouse is better/easier at i'm going to get owned by everone who has one. a keyboard/mouse is only good for something like the sims or Home IMO.

this is rediculous just make your game so that ps3 users can use a keyboard and mouse every game should be like that anyway then the people who complain about fgetting killed too much because they dont have a keyboard and mouse can go get one ffxi did it obviously not that big a deal even though it was an rpg and im sttill mad that he didntt include ha feaure in ut3 because console users can use a keyyboard and mouse

Why don't they just offer K/M support on the PS3? That way you can choose to use the K/M or a controller, then add an option to have a server dedicated to controller only games?????

"it won’t due to the probably advantage" wtf?? I'm beginning to think I went to the wrong school because everyone talks funny. I think Sony should have a fw update where we can set up a mouse and keyboard for games instead of a controller. The problem would be solved then if you ask me.

It seems as cross-platform might be dead on its tracks. Probably do to what Enacku said about cheaters.
