THQ dev says "potential for better graphics on PS3 than 360"

As some of you may know, THQ is holding their annual gamer's day event in San Francisco, California and this has resulted in a great quote for PlayStation 3 users worldwide.  According to Jeff Carroll, Associate Producer of upcoming title Red Faction: Guerilla for the PS3, went ahead and let people know that the PS3 is capable of better graphics than its counterpart the XBOX 360.

When asked if the PS3 was capable of achieving better graphics, he responded with "I think potentially you will. I think early on people are going to be struggling to figure out exactly how to make the PS3 work. But I think once they do, they will see it's a very powerful system underneath."

He also went on to add that Red Faction is definitely going to be pushing the processing power and memory power of the PS3.

All of this sounds great to the reader but we'll have to decide for ourselves once we get to see the game in action to see if his words are warranted or not.  As more develops from the Red Faction camp we'll be sure to keep you posted.

As Sony said, the lifespan for the PS3 is about 10 years since the release, so I would expect it to have a bigger potential than the 360.

7 cores in the ps3 edward, one was left inactive to increase yeilds. but i agree that reasonably soon you will start seeing the difference in graphics between ps3 and 360 mgs4, kilzone 2 and resistance 2 are a few examples of games that could well show this

yeah i agree with that quote but i think that the xbox has been made to have more of a shorter life-span and i dont think that we will see the true power of the ps3 untill the xbox 360 has died away and microsoft have created a newer consol with the newer technolagy and then we will se the real console war for the graphics

i do agree with this but think the real jaw droping games and graphics will come in around 6-7 years, hopefully sooner :)

The 8th one didnt even use at all dude,if the developer wanted to use it then they can program it .There finally!!! someone comes clean about this not like ps3 graphix r worst every developer says that in the beginning like every consoles just came out u have to get use to the consoles.

I haven't seen nothing yet. If there's a diference it's minimal. I don't think that it's the graphical aspect that makes PS3 the better machine.

I think that what makes PS3 better is: Hardware relliablity, in-built features (like BR, Wifi), and Sony itself. Did you guys noticed the number of games produced by Sony that are above average in quality? Motorstorm, Ratchet, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, GT5, MGS, Folklore, Warhawk. Almost all games are good. The attetion that sony gives to localization is very importan too. Ratchet and Uncharted are spoken in... Portuguese? wow, first time I see a game spoken in Portuguese.

PSN is getting better and better. Any time soon it will be better then XBL.

of course you havent seen anything yet. 90% of devs are still half as$in it on the PS3

    • 5:51pm BST - April 5th, 2008

This is a no-brainer. Everyone knows that the PS3 is capable of better graphics, including 360 owners. All it takes is just 1 developer to unlock the PS3's true potential and that's it.

Most developers have only scratched the surface of what the PS3 can really handle. I hope that MGS4 and Killzone 2 push the PS3 even further.

But right now, PS3 exclusive games have better graphics than 360 exclusives and all 360 games in general. It's just that  most developers that release multiplatform games are still making the 360 the lead platform and are just porting the game over onto the PS3.

I know one thing for sure, the Xbox 360 is holding back PS3 multiplatform games and those lazy 3rd party developers need to step their game up because compared to 1st party PS3 exclusive games or 3rd party PS3 exclusives, multiplatform PS3 game titles are further behind graphically.

You can't turn the last core on; that's the point. If you're making an eight-core chip, sometimes one or more cores simply won't function up to spec. If you only intend to use seven cores anyway, then you don't have to throw the chip away just because one core doesn't work. The reason one core is disabled is that only seven of the eight cores in the PS3 cell chip are guaranteed to actually work.

The 8th core is on and working.  The reason its there is to prevent redundant processes.  8th core is a quality assurance core that perfects the Cells functions.

The 360 is already reaching it's limits. The PS3 is just getting started, as developers have more time with the system they will be able to drive the PS3 to it's limits, and those linits wont be reached for another 4-5 years maybe 9 years.

lol not see potetial for 9 years...in about 6 1/2 years the ps4 will be released and basicly all of the good game will be on that.  in 9 years they will just be killing of the ps3 :P

so many people forgetting the 10 year life cycle means 7 years as main console and 3 of being the backup cash cow (like the ps2 is now)

The problem is even when somthing DOES look better they'll just say you;r biased though. I mean why is it that they all claim that over saturated colors are better than easier to read details? that's what they've said about like a dozen multiplatform games. It's not that the PS3 games are washed out it's that they have more realistic colors.

The PS3 naturally has more processing power than the Xbox 360. It has 6 SPU's dedicated to gaming, 1 dedicated for the XMB and internet (which means that in game XMB can definately be done) and 1 "locked" SPU that can be unlocked to add to the gaming processors later down the track. Plus it has a graphics card equivellent to the 360 anyway (if not better as it's overclocked to do more shader operations).
Microsoft on the other hand had to rush the release of the Xbox 360 because Nvidia stopped production of the motherboard and chipset for the Xbox. That's why for the first year the Xbox 360's were faulty becuae they had to rush the release. This itself made the consoles' life a shorter one than the PS3 becuase they (Microsoft) didn't want to lose its console revenue/fanbase.

    • 9:37pm BST - April 5th, 2008

Better than hearing about how it's too hard to develop for the PS3. Even if it's not true, which I think all of us here would agree is true, perception is reality. The current perception is that the PS3 is a b**** to program for and that online is weak. If developers start finally saying the opposite than there's hope for the PS3. It's bad enough that (seemingly) the entire gaming community is Xbox crazy with every multi-platform preview being shown on the 360 first. But, again, if the perception can change that the PS3 is a viable and necessary system then things can get better for our favorite system.

oh your right netherdragon forgot still though but dont just focus on the visuals the cell is perfect for gameplay features such as ai physics lighting things of that nature imagine giving each aspect of the game to a different spu obviously its harder then it sounds because you have to organize your data but thats the beauty of the ps3 is that it has enough processing power to elevate gameplay to a whole new level not just graphics like other consoles

Actually the PS3 Cell does indeed have 8 cores. 7 SPU's (enabled) plus the PPU which is dual threaded all @ 3.2 GHz. So it's technically 8... but acts as a 9 core. The Xbox 360 technically has 3 dual threaded cores and so acts as a 6 core @ 3.2 GHz.

The PS3 has more power but unfortunately this will only show with 1st party games.DEvs working on multi platform games will not spend extra time and resources to make the ps3 version look better than the 360 version.

Everyone knew this except for sum 360 geeks who r still in deniel which is why i can`t understand why do companies make games for the 360 first then just port games to ps3,i thought the gaming business was about making the best game you can or has money , being cheap and which console has a higher install base more important to these devs now....    gamers matter not massive profits!

The only games that really ever suck are the ones they try to port from the xbox 360. They need to make PS3 the number one console make the game incredible then chop and cut the game to fit on dvd, and for it to be able to even run on the 360. I have both systems and the 360 is already hitting the ceiling on it's power and graphics and they know that it's running out of space on dvd, soon I think we will start seeing mutiple disc. (Thats why MGS4 won't go to the 360)

Sounds interesting.  but who knows I guess we will find out wont we.  I knew that already about the PS3 who didn't ha ha.   Tech specs.  say that the 360 as a better graphics card. but the fact that the PS3 has enough power to triple there graphics card solves it right there.

Memory power? Wow, no wonder he gave such an obvious quote.  I think Sony should have put at least 512MB RAM in the PS3 to offset the XMB taking 96MB for itself.  Actually, 1GB would be nice but hey, costs are bad enough.

    ---

To everyone who said something about the disabled core, I can't help but think Sony is going to do a PSP-esque move and enable it later to add more power.

    ---

I can't wait for the day the devs stop b!tching and actually work for a decent coding of a game.
