PS3 peripheral compatibility improves

A post on the official PlayStation Blog has announced significantly improved compatibility between music peripherals on the PS3. It marks the first steps to achieving a much smoother and more efficient experience when playing the growing range of music titles such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Many of you will remember the uproar when it became apparent that there were compatibility issues when trying to use Rock Band guitars with Guitar Hero, and vice versa. In fact, a lot of you were probably affected by it and forced to buy another guitar. Annoyingly, compatibility was far better for Xbox 360 users.

Well good news from Michael Shorrock, Director of 3rd Party Relations at SCEA. He has revealed a number of compatibility improvements for the mentioned titles, as well as SingStar and Konami's Rock Revolution. It is a little confusing, so you may want to read it over a few times:

"Guitar Hero: World Tour’s guitars and drums will work with Rock Band 2 and Konami’s Rock Revolution software. And yes, you guessed it, Rock Band 2’s guitar and drum set will work with Guitar Hero: World Tour and with Rock Revolution.

Conversely, Rock Revolution’s drum set will work with both Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2. In addition, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2 will both support the SingStar microphones."

It's good to see that Sony is working on improving cross-title peripheral support behind the scenes as the thought of having to buy new guitars and microphones for each IP is rather frightening (mostly for our wallets).

"We’re still working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market, and we hope to have an announcement on that shortly," Shorrock added.

    @ angryplaystation - You can buy JUST the software for Rock Band. The strange thing; on both game.co.uk & play.com, they ONLY have the Rock Band Solus for sale (Just game no peripherals). I can now get Rock Band, as I will not have to pay a ludicrous amount of money for the instruments. I will be buying GH World Tour & can now use there BETTER instruments for both games. Thanks Sony. - Matt -

    Amazing news, but if Rock Band songs work for Rock Band 2, that also means you can use the guitar hero stuff for both?

    This is the reason I stay away from these kinds of games, you might as well just pick up a real instrument.

    Hey Perez, why dont you pick up a real instrument and not troll Music game posts, Oh wait I know because this is easier for you.

    Glad to hear they've figured out a way to bridge the gap that EA and Activision couldnt do on their own, it was for the best anyway since it's just annoying knowing that these peripherals are getting out of control. Thankfully I alreayd have RB1 so all I'll be doing is buying the stand alone game (yes, they DO sell these games without the instruments.)

    @ Alpha - To quote an above poster, I can do both. I can play a guitar and troll :D and all I meant by my comment was that its cheaper to just buy a real instrument than to keep buying game instruments and the game to play it. Thats IT. but as usual it got blown out of proportion.

    Hmm. I wonder about old instruments. I was planning on getting RB2  just as a disc and maybe a new guitar and be happy. If I can get my RB1 instruments working with GHWT and Konami's offering then I will be happy, if not, well, I just won't buy them and just stick with RB2.

    @Hush404

    I was thinking the same thing. I really hope that my original Rock Band instruments work with GH:WT, and if they work with Rock Revolution it would be great too. That's is definitely the only way I am going to end up buying the new GH. If not, the only music games I will be purchasing in the future are the Rock Band sequels. And I think that a big percentage of Rock Band owners are thinking the same way. There is no way that I am going to buy another set of plastic instruments.

    emmmm... Guitar Hero World Tour drums will have 5 places to hit, while Rock Band 2 drums will have only 4.

    I doubt that all instruments will be platform cross compatible.

    Anyway, great news for me. But Im still not sure about this.
