PS4 games will look ‘even more beautiful’ in five years, says Guerrilla Games

Killzone: Shadow Fall developer Guerrilla Games has stated its belief that PlayStation 4 titles five years down the line will have evolved significantly from a visual standpoint.

Speaking during an interview with AusGamers, Eric Boltjes, the Lead Designer on Shadow Fall, noted that launch titles by their nature do not max out a console’s potential, leaving ample room for improvement.

“Being my own personal views, and not necessarily company ones, but I think with every new platform, the first games that come out, because of just the way things work — with the way the tools get developed etc — it’s not using it’s maximum potential yet. Regardless of how beautiful Killzone: Shadow Fall is and how well it runs, I think games within the next five years running on the PS4 will be even more beautiful, and even better," he said.

“So I think that’s going to be cool. But more so than ever before, I think gamers and the gaming audience in general are hungry for something new, something different they haven’t played before. You can see it with the development of the indies: they’re bringing something new and fresh to the table, and I think a lot of people are catching on to that.”

One only has to look at the evolution of the PS3 from a graphical perspective to see just how far games have come on the system. This year has seen some of the most visually-stunning titles out for Sony’s seven-year-old platform, including The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls — both of which are miles ahead of anything released during the console’s launch period.

Similarly, Killzone itself as a franchise has come leaps and bound since 2009’s Killzone 2, which was a visual showpiece upon its original release. Juxtapose the shooter with Shadow Fall however, and the difference is quite remarkable — the same goes for Killzone 3.
