Michael Pachter talks upcoming PlayStation price cuts

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has gained a fair bit of respect from us over the last year or so, and for good reason. He has been right on a lot of his claims, and generally close to correct on rest.

When speaking about hardware and software sales throughout 2007 and into 2008, Pachter speculated that Sony would lower the cost of it's aging PlayStation 2 early next year.

“Sony announced a SingStar PS2 bundle for $149, and will likely cut the price for the PS2 at the beginning of next year (note that Sony recently raised its forecast for PS2 sales by 2 million this year, ending March 31, 2008)."

We expect the magic $99.99 price point for Sony's seven year old console.

Regarding the current generation, Pachter also thinks we'll be seeing another PlayStation 3 price cut in the Spring.

“We expect a further price cut for the PS3 in the spring, when blockbuster games Grand Theft Auto IV and PS3 exclusives Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet and Gran Turismo 5 will launch."

We'll have solid news regarding PlayStation price cuts when they occur.

i think the ps3 is to cheap, for all that it offers, its already cheap enough. when things get to cheap it dosnt seem like it worth anything. i like electronice to be around 600. especially the ps3.

A guess is a guess, it doesn't matter whether its right or wrong. I rather see it instead of seeing the old "I told you so" remarks approach people take nowadays. :E

The guy is an idiot he's only been repeating common sense. I'VE made more accurate predictions than he has and it's not even my job!

He says it every month so he looks like he gets it right when it actually happens. I think everyone can make a guess that the PS2 will hit $99 and that the PS3 will see a price cut next spring.

Well I had heard from a video blogger that Playstation usually makes thier price cuts in March. With the new games coming out in the spring it's not too far fetched for a price cut in the near future.

There will be another price cut when GT5 comes out. It will also be added into a bundle, and will probably have a 120GB HDD version release as well. But everyone is guessing. That just happens to be mine.
