PlayStation 4 to be "Wii-tized," launching 2011?

According to Goto Hiroshige at pc.watch.impress.jp (as translated by the ever-obliging posters at NeoGAF), certain anonymous Japanese developers have received preliminary specifications for the PlayStation 4.
If Hiroshige is to be believed, Sony Computer Entertainment's fourth home console has been "Wii-tized", being "no more than twice" as powerful as the PlayStation 3. We're not sure it's just to liken such mind-boggling hardware to Nintendo's underpowered money-printer, but perhaps Hiroshige is implying that the PlayStation 4 will be the weakest of the next-next-gen machines.
Sony has apparently pulled all its engineers out of Texas to work on the new console, which is said to utilise the same CELL architecture (plus improvements) as its predecessor. Techies may/may not be pleased to know that the PS4 will use the JEDEC memory type (GDDR3/DDR3) for its main memory, rather than XDR.
Hiroshige has also pulled a release date out of the hat - 2011 or sooner. SCE is, he says, eager to beat the third Xbox to market.
A load of old cobblers or Gospel truth? You decide.

It remains to be seen as well as the price tag for the PS4. With the PS3 being $599 one can only wonder ow much "power" will be put into it and how much that will sky rocket the price of the system.

Yeah right!Sony already has PLENTY of plans till at least 2010!Do you really think they'll be blabbing about the ten year life cycle to make the supposed golden era of the ps3 look stale?I think not.

A PS3-slim will see the marked before.. and if the xbox 720 is stronger then the PS3, then the xbox will have the same problem that the PS3 have today... Downgraded games, so i don't see anything to be scared about...

you can already figure that it wont be a HUGE step past PS3 in terms of power, since they dont want a rediculous price for the system, given the problem for the PS3. but i still think its too early to be talking about PS4. but if they want to have devs plan the system now. thats fine if they really need to

absolute ********, although its hard to imagine anything more powerful than ps3, there's stil room to grow yeah, but ps3 will be next to ps4, fighting the next generation coming, together, so sony really dont have much to work on, i reckon rather than making another console thats only gonna reach its max potential in like, 5 years after it release, they should keep ground with wat they have, and make sure they just have killer lineups and stuff,

Talk of PS4 actually REALLY excites me I'm really looking forward to the next piece of technology. However I do on the other hand feel where you guys are coming from in the sense that it's a bit too soon. This situation could go one of two ways 1. The PS4 could end up reinventing the days of sheer Sony domination when they were the underdogs of power - remember PS1 and PS2 DESTROYED their competition despite being less powerful than all the other systems .Plus those two systems (PS1,PS2) had more games and more 3rd Party exclusives in general - especially JRPGs, and it would be nice to see Sony take their crown back as #1 even though to most of us THEY"LL ALWAYS BE - or 2. The PS4 could release with some "uber" power that destroys the other systems in terms of specs. Question is could Sony release the most powerful system again next gen and be on top again like PS2 and PS1 days? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

are you kidding me they haven't even release ps3 full power yet and they thinking about ps4 ...i mean dont get me wrong , i am sony fan but i think sony should wait lil bit longer .... just because xbot 720 is coming out doesn't mean they have to come out with ps4....ps3 is way stonger even wen xbot 720 comes out ps3 gunna win no question asked. ps2 been out for so long and it still surviving and look at x box cant even survive...if ps4 comes out... i am gunna wait for the price to drop until then i have ps3 keep me busy ...

this is stupid, why would sony invest so much money into blue ray+ cell, and then create a ps4 which does not utilise these features fully. Makes no sense, they will probably make a wii style controller and similar style of games for ps3, but they do not need a new console to do this. Price cuts will inevitally give the ps3 more of an appeal to the mass market and at the same time ps3 will be more or just as powerful as the new xbox.

Despite these ambiguous claims, realistically speaking I think that by 2011 there'll be a slim-line PS3. A newly modeled version that'll make it as cheap as the Wii.

although I think this story is untrue in regards to the date of launch. I have always said that the PS4 won't be a huge step up in technology this time around. Sony will use the same basic interior but upgrade things where they need to. Adding things like more ram or replacing expensive parts with cheeper but just as replayable components that have now been developed to bring the costs down. This is what they mean by the Wii reference. The wii is basically a game cube. I think the PS4 will basically be a PS3 but with all the "negative" features fixed or replaced and the best stuff upgraded. Call it the PS3 2.0. This will do 2 things. It will allow Sony to make up money on there cost incured during the development of the PS3 and all the complaints developers had for it in regards to the ram situation and such. I don't think we will see another leap and bound over the past generation, instead the best possible upgrade to the PS3. maybe a dualqore cell hehe.

this is all bs. Sony already confirmed that the PS3 has a guaranteed 10 yrs MINIMUM lifespan before they start workin on a new system, and i so believe that too.

Sony plan a 10 year life cycle for PS3 (2006-16), so we can expect PS4 a few years before that. But 2011 sounds a bit too early. No way will Sony try to beat Microsoft to market, the 360 can't have that much life left in it so surely the next-box will be here in a few years.
It could be plausable that it'll be not a huge leap in power, but PS3 is so powerful anyway - well thats what Sony keeps telling us all. Will it just be a network login station (NetStation anyone?) whereby games are stores on Sonys servers and we just logon to play. Or am I looking too far into the future.
Or maybe we'll just jack in Matrix style.

Early talk of PS4 is not a shock to me. 2 years after PS2 was realesed the rumor mill was flying about PS3. I agree with some of the comments about seeing a slim PS3 before PS4. I'm guessing though that staying with the same arcitecture will allow dev's familar ground to develop on.

wii tized? lol i thought they were going to start putting wii games on playstation, i forgot about that new controller thing, should we start saving now? because i want to get one at launch so, i can stand out in line like all the other uber nerds. hahaha just kidding. i'll be there when it comes out i don't think i will sit out there for 3 days though or even a week like some people did just to get there hands on a ps3. it will be like the PS3 launch, people loosing there job or giving up a marriage for it. which 2011 isn't that for off and hopefully i'll be there on launch day!!!

I thought April Fools day was in, well, April. I'm not buying into this but I have some things to say regardless :o) It sounds very very skeptical as this would only give the current system 5 years. Not only that, but I can't see Sony laying back and being 'the weakest of the next-next-gen machines.' That's just ridiculous. If anything, it likely means that it will require more interaction and physical movement like the Wii. I might be in the minority, but I do hope they come out with it in 2011 or sooner, as I would like to see them back on top, or at least ahead of M$, from the get go. Playing catch up is ok, but it would by nice to see developers making games for the PS then port over sloppy versions to m$ :o) If a story about a system that scratches your disks doesn't kill sales, it just means that this 3 pony race is going to go on for a very very long time. PS3. PS4. PSX9 (19). I'll buy them :o)

BS the fact that it;s going to be the weakest is completely false, crytek is basing their new enging around ps4, i highly doubt its going to be release as soon as 2011 especially since its just now starting to hit its stride psu should have never posted this

After just coming out of a thread where you kids were complaining about the possible cost of DLC for SW: The Force unleashed, I'm here to remind you guys that nothing matters but PRICE. WHO CARES WHAT'S UNDER THE HOOD?! The PS4 could include a nuclear missile, but if you cheap, lazy, broke geeks feel like it's too much (ie. more than the other console), you won't get it. IT NEVER MATTERED THAT THE PS3 COULD DO SO MUCH MORE THAN THE 360. IT NEVER MATTERED THE THE 360'S HARDWARE IS STILL FAILING TO THIS DAY. PEOPLE STILL CHANCE IT BECAUSE IT'S CHEAPER.
*
An early post in this thread talked about how Sony doesn't want to release a system after MS again, but the Wii and the PS3 came out the same month...and the Wii is underpowered...and the Wii is Wii-ning (lol). If the PS3 was the same price as the 360 from the start, the would be no 360 RIGHT NOW. Everyone balked at the price so much that to this day people STILL have to be told about all of its extra features, because they never looked into it before. Heck, some OWNERS don't even know their PS3's.

The PS2 was weaker than the Xbox, Gamecube and Dreamcast.
*
The PS1 was weaker than the Saturn and N64
*
The DS is weaker than the PSP
*
The Wii and the 360 are weaker than the PS3.
*
Sony believed in their own popularity and finally made a super system for their fans. But their fans felt betrayed and punished them for it. The didn't account for how cheap and lazy gamers are. Especially in North America, where we want everthing "now" and saving our money is something we hate to do. Sony underestimated that and everyone went cheap LIKE THEY ALWAYS DO AND WILL DO AGAIN.
