Quantic Dream: Heavy Rain QTE criticism is 'bull***t'

Quantic Dream bigwig David Cage has brushed off criticism accusing the firm’s upcoming PlayStation 3 thriller Heavy Rain for being over reliant on quick time events.
The studio co-founder didn’t mince his words when given the opportunity to hit out at recent criticism of the hotly anticipated title at GamesCom last week, stating, "Bullshit! Just bullshit! I mean what's the question? We released Fahrenheit before. People know very well what the kind of balance we're looking for is. The balance is quite similar in Heavy Rain.”
Cage noted that sceptics are likely confused by the game’s 3D interface, mistaking it for quick time events, when in fact you are given absolute freedom to explore and interact with the environment around you.
"I think that people who didn't see any demos or did not play the game are a little bit confused by the fact that the interface is in 3D. It's not quick time events. You navigate. You're free to explore. It's just that the interface, instead of being 2D icons in the lower corner, they are now inside the set. That's the only difference. You control the character second to second, and the balance is quite similar to Fahrenheit. There's no difference."
Wrapping up, Cage stated emphatically that the game’s objective is to tell the story through gameplay segments, not cut scenes – if it were the latter, he noted it wouldn't be any different than making a movie.
"You know when you make a first-person shooter, you just see ten seconds and you know what the game is about," said Cage. "When you see a game that has no real reference, that is kind of different, it's really difficult. Some people imagine things. Don't be afraid. It's not quick time based. All the purpose of Heavy Rain is to tell the story not through cutscenes but through gameplay. I would be stupid just to release cutscenes. I mean what's the point? I'd better make movie then. That's silly."
Heavy Rain is due out exclusively for PS3 early next year.

Well,he's right you know,QTEs in this game are definitely balanced and well timed, unlike SOOOOOOOOOO many other games this gen, which just use random QTEs for the sake of QTEs.

The gameplay might be cool but the story only being 10 hours and is going to make this game BLOW. This developer needs more imagination and less DLC in the future. 15-20 hour games shoud be a minimum if you arent going to have a robust multiplayer.

@8 sorry you lost me when you claimed the story was good.
CoD4 wasnt even a great MP game, its basically CSS all over again with perks, heavy rain on the other hand is completely unique and im loving the style of the game (I was a big fan of indigo prophecy/farheneit)

This is how developers should treat critics that don't know what they're talking about. You should never insult a game that you don't know enough about.
@10
You do realize that it will be around 10 of solid near limitless gameplay. The replay value of this game should be amazing (as long as the game is actually like it has been previewed so far). With all of the choices and options throughout the game, I can almost guarantee you'll want to play through multiple times to try things completely different and see how things end up. That and the fact that short games aren't instantly bad. Look at Mirrors Edge. Whether you liked it or not, you have to admit that the game was really innovative and unique, and although it was a short game without real online, it was still fun. I'm not saying it was the best game or anything but it was definately fun, and Heavy Rain seems to be turning out into an amazing game so far. At the current moment, it's my most looked forward to exclusive.

Heavy Rain looks great
what pisses me off is when devs advertise a gameplay mechanic thats just a gimmick
Star Wars TFU's DMM & multiple endings were bull***t
Fable II's families and properties were bull***t
inFamous' cover system was bull***t
Heavy Rain's gameplay is innovative, not bull***t

What difference does it make, really? Even if it was only quick time everything is not a button masher or a game filled with tons of fighting.People need to try differnt types of games because it's all just interactive entertainment anyway.

Who are they to judge this game when they haven't even played it? You can't judge it off a few trailers. This game looks like it is trying something innovative so they shouldn't bash it before it even has a demo.

You can count this up to fanboyism if you want but having a 360 I know both communities well. The PS3 crowd is gnerally more open to games that force you to think and games that aren't considered traditional and try to break new ground. 360 owners (most not all) are into a bunch of fast paced explosion nonsense and hate it when a game forces you to think on any level. I've actually read people's complaints on the 360 boards about how batman arkahm asylum would have been better if it was straight fighting and how lame and boring the detective parts are. I've also noticed that PSN online is much more enjoyable because the people you play with arent usually 12 year olds screaming into a mic about how uber-leet they are (I don;t even know what that means)

This "game" is going to come and go. I especially love the comments about this being the best game out there. Really?
As for the "game" itself it looks like a new version of those old games from the 80s where you pop in a VHS tape and have a little card that goes along with to interact. This is a glorified 10 hour interactive cut-scene, nothing more. You might as well get one of those choose your own adventure books, at least those are interactive.

Remember the time that this is the first response to criticism with profanity? I like it. It calls for it, nearly every time, though most feel that animosity would be a step in the wrong direction. His response to the criticism makes me want this game even more than before; if he's willing to go against public standard with a profantic response such as his, he must believe in it that much more than those who respond public-appropriate.

Meh, I'll wait for overall reviews or a demo first before I make any further judgements..... Plus, I got to admit the 10 hrs of gameplay isn't doing it for me (way too short). I usually never replay a game unless its REALLY REALLY good. Oh yeah, Quantic Dream can't really blame people for believing it's only quicktime events since that's about all they shown to far. I mean, show me the goods. This is my OPINION, so no B*tching please lol

The problem is the first time you have to "press X to not die" is the second someone's going to call it a QTE and say that David is just wallowing in his own artistic ego. Yes you can control the character at all times... until you reach a combat scene against a character and then you have multiple paths you can take in quick succession with some of them being a possible final moment where you live or die. That first death that some reviewer encounters will cause the game to loose about 10 points in any review, and we all know it. It doesnt matter how good the game is in the end the reviews are going to urinate all over it just because it's not another effing FPS.

Allright team,
Here's the deal. As many of you know, the game is not out, nor is the demo for that matter. So what are these "critics" baseing their opinions on? They have painted themselves in a corner of not knowing whta the H-E (double hockey sticks) they're talking about... much like others who advise how bad the game is becasue of their quite FINITE information that they have based their opinions on.
Indigo Prophecy? Great friggen GAME. This was one of those "Think Outside The Box" games (Much like mirrors edge.. props to you jman12343 for bringing that up)
Now we have TONS of FPS's and TONS more on the way. I understand the idea of if it aint broke dont fix it, but damn guys ... how many times do we have to shoot Nazi's before they get tired of getting shot ... oh wait ..lets do someting different .. lets make ZOMBIE NAZI'S... that'll get em goin... now its like they've traded nazi's for Middle Easterners.
And it goes on an on ...
Lets try a different game ... lets try something new ... lets try to make a game that is ... dare I say it ... outside the box. Hey I'm all for a GREAT FPS ... and they do come along every now and again... (Killzone 2, Crisis) but if thats all we have .. its like hittin skins with a fat chick .. you bucked one you've bucked them all ...the only different is how much you have to work to role her over ... and how much of the fat you have to wade thru to get to the wet spot....
I'll support this one . You've got my $60. Let me know when its out Dave....
