During the CEDIA convention this week, Sony unveiled two new stand-alone Blu-ray players that will be available to the public this fall.
The two players, the BDP-S500 and the BDP-S500ES will both support 1080P/60p and 24p video, all high-resolution audio formats using HDMI 1.3a, and AVCHD support for discs encoded with x.v. Color.
The BDP-S500ES will include all of the same features as the S500, but will also have "dual shield construction" and two separate boards for audio and video, which will allow for better performance as well as better audio quality. The ES model will be the first on the market to qualify for Sony's "Elevated Standards" program.
The BDP-S500 and S500ES will both be available this fall at USD 699 and USD 1299 respectively, adding a mid and high end entry point in addition to the lower priced BDP-300 model which is currently only USD 499.

wow not cheap. oh well I have my PS3 for now. I won't be needing a standalone player for a while.
I'm looking forward to when Blu-ray players get the price tag of 150-200 USD.
i have ps3 so this doesn't matter right
got a ps3 dont need this. but still dese players are quite expensive
I think that this shows that SONY is really giving us a good deal with the price of the PS3.
Just shows how much of a bargain the PS3 is :)
Sony, Sony, Sony, I hate to say it but man they have to drop the price of that entry level player to 299 - 348 if they even think they can compete with HD DVD. Who I might add keep saying that they will have a sub $200 player in the works for this fall (So hoping this isn't true).
I think for most PS3 is still the far better choice. But this new player is good for those who dont care about gameing, or any of the other stuff PS3 can do. Stuff might be expensive, but there area always people who will want to buy it. A lot of people interested in Blue-Ray or HD-DVD, usually is because they have invested in a very expensive TV and surround sound.
psn id: gingo... so why people just buy a ps3? it has an excellent blu ray player built in plus it plays games, music and u can chat to people around the world for free what else do u want
Gingo - my father in law just boght a PS3 for that reason,(100$ price cut pushed him) he doesnt care about games at all but likes the media storage and BR player. Im curious to know the % of these types of buyers. He studied the market for about a month decided BR was going to win and bought the PS3. So some are buying for that reason.
