Sony aware that consumers want in-game XMB

Most of the PS3 community have run into the issue that they are in the middle of playing a game and a friend will message them but they have no way to access that message unless they choose to completely exit out of the game. That is just one scenario that brings to light the need for In-Game access to the XMB (cross media bar) for the PlayStation 3, and Sony has now come out and let consumers know they are aware of this.

The headman of the PlayStation Network, Eric Lempel, has expressed that this feature is the most requested feature from PlayStation 3 owners and has risen to the top of Sony's high priority list. In an interview with ShackNews, Lempel went on record to state:

"We are looking at a number of enhancements related to accessing some of the XMB features during gameplay, including messaging your friends," he said. "While there's no timeline to announce at this point, we've heard loud and clear from consumers that in-game XMB access is one of the most requested PS3 enhancements."

Even though Lempel did not disclose an exact time frame as to when this issue would be resolved, it is possible the feature might not surface until Sony's community driven project Home is released and have the community aspect come together full circle.

Since the system's release last fall, PlayStation 3 owners have voiced their discontent with the lack of in-game XMB access which they believe has taking away from the ability to play in-game custom soundtracks, in-game messaging to friends as well as being able to jump right into the action of playing a multiplayer online game with a friend.

These features have all come to be expected from the PlayStation 3 especially since their direct competitor, Xbox 360, has had most of these features already running on their system since it's respective launch.

custom soundtrack is a developer issue not a hardware issue. The new Stardust HD update has it along with high velocity bowling and i assume Burnout and GTAIV will have it.

DefTechPioElite, The issue is that Dev's AREN'T putting it in. This feature is something that consumers should expect on any game and it is, for consistancy sake, the hardwares issue now.

Also this comment " it is possible the feature might not surface until Sony's community driven project Home is released and have the community aspect come together full circle."

I have been saying all along that this feature won't pop up until home release or open beta. Hence my sadness when home was delayed. However, seeing as the last update to home was just bring about some of the big features sonys been pushing with home. I think the delay was in order. I was hopeing though that ingame xmb would slide out without being bundled to home release.

psn id: gingo... i'm glad they are listening but i would like it a bit sooner than when Home comes out, we've already seen the technology is there for messaging friends i.e. resistance and custom soundtracks i.e. super stardust so it shouldn't take too long

I have to agree with 'DefTechPioElite', I think all custom soundtrack selections would be BEST handled by Game Developers. I have a nasty feeling that using the XMB to choose a custom soundtrack or playlist might cut out all in game sound, like essential sound effects (car engines, gun fire, explosions etc) and the ablility to locate targets coming from behind you, or to the side of you when using surround sound. There's also the possibility that it might make games more unstable and cause them to crash. I think it would be far better to force Lazy Game Developers to intigrate custom soundtrack selection into their games and make it a standard option in all games, rather than using Sony's XMB. They've just done it with Startust HD, so theirs no reason other Delevopers can't do it too!

Sony has know this for a long time and considering speculation is that this wil be deployed with Home indicates this maybe a tough nut for Sony to crack?

We need in game messaging, in game music, AND in game chat over mic with friends. THEN I'll be satisfied. If you can get all that without In - game XMB, then it's all cool.

I think everyone who is complaining about how/when PSU gets their news either needs to host their own PS3 website or STFU.Unless you play your PS3 non-stop,you will eventually read your message,so calm down.If you want music while your playing games, turn on your stereo,it's not that hard.....whinny bastards
