Treyarch talks Call of Duty: World at War co-op and AI

Posted on August 5th, 2008 at 01:32 EDT

In an interview with Trecharch's Mark Lamia, new details were revealed about Call of Duty: World at War, explaining how implementing realistic Japanese WW2 strategy and introducing co-op to the Call of Duty mix were large undertakings.

"We’re introducing a new enemy, the Imperial Japanese Army, which uses new and different tactics," said Lamia. "And for the first time ever in the Call of Duty series, we’re introducing co-op."

"This is the first time the franchise has gone into the Pacific theater, and the Imperial Japanese Army was a vastly different enemy than the Germans in the European theater, so we had to design a whole new type of combat and tactics," he explained. "The Japanese will banzai charge you, ambush you, climb trees to snipe you, and run, crawl, or climb anywhere imaginable to kill you."

When it came to building the AI for the Japanese in World at War, the team had to rethink basic enemy strategy and tactics to make the characters fit into the time period and environment.

"There was a point, when we put some great-looking Japanese character models in a Pacific environment with standard Call of Duty AI - and it just didn’t work for us," said Lamia. "It looked great, but the enemy didn’t “fit,” and the scenarios didn’t feel like they should. We realized we needed to focus specifically on Japanese tactics in order to realize this new enemy. It took a few more months for this to come together, but when it did, it helped crystallize the game. It was around that time that... the game took on a grittier tone."

Call of Duty: World at War is set to release this fall for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. Stay tuned for more details.

Sounds good. I'm still a little bitter that this game is WW2 but I think I may still give this one a rent.

they need to make a f'in vietnam game to were we get to play as the vietnamese and blast tho's mutha f'in americans to pieces, like wut happened in real life in the late 60's.

i hate that bullt wen they make all these vietnam games like the americans won or something and were victorious... wtf? yeah ok,we got pwned by the vietnamese troops.

anyways, conflict vietnam was the best game for a war vietam game ever.

i think it would be kool if (maybe) infinity ward made a vietnam COD.

this world at war game looks promising so far.

im diggin the co-op and thos gnarly flameafied throwers.

i like ww2 shooters better then Modern warfare (to a certain point).

I'm not going to be interested COD games if there's going to be one every year, it's like your buying the same game over and over, they should have released it in 2009 with even more improvements

Mean that their initial idea is to just copy and paste everything, change some textures and export to disc.

tis wont b like COD3. COD3 was rushed and made in 10months for 5consoles, each with a different engine that Treyarch built. Now, Treayarch has had over 2yrs so I excpect tis to be good

im not going to argue about the outcome of the war...but your statements our ingnorant to the people who fought bravely for the United States Military...we certainly were not "pwned" by the Vietnamese...considering the United states lost less than 60 thousand soldiers including those classified as MIA (MISSING in action) while estimates of Vietnamese casualties are near 1.5 MILLION!!

thats a 25:1 Kill to death ratio in CoD multiplayer...i think if you saw someone with those stats you would never say he got PWNED

The video split screen game play looked very good so this game may be worth buying. I hope Treyarch comes through on this one. It's been an excellent series.

@ 6  You have to be the most ignorant person on here. I was going to clearly set the record straight but Metfanant did that for me. And no one spells perfectly all the time but some of things you said sound like they come from a 2 year old. Honestly, you’re a waste of space and the world would be better off without you. I’m going to have to include you as well EFFORTLESS8 for agreeing with him.
