WTF Sony? You could have kept these exclusives!

Sony has had the opportunity to keep many games that have slipped as exclusives. Whether it was communicating with developers or supplying development kits, major titles slipped into multiplatform grounds.
An exclusive means a little something to the gamer. Often exclusive games receive more attention and thus polish. But exclusives are very important to the console maker. It's because of this that it's puzzling Sony has let so much opportunity slip by, while Sony's customers have been the ones clamoring for developer's ears.
The following list are all games that were once announced as exclusives to the PlayStation 3. However due to lack of development kits, funds, or simply publishers changing their minds, Sony lost exclusivity:
- Assassin's Creed (According to Newsweek, Sony played the waiting game and lost because Microsoft jumped in and offered generous terms for Assassins Creed to be multiplatform)
- Bladestorm: Hundred Years War
- Devil May Cry 4 (Capcom states they want to share the love on all systems... but games like Dead Rising clearly show they are willing to do exclusives)
- Dynasty Warriors 6
- Fatal Inertia
- Mercenaries 2 World in Flames (Publisher EA made the choice to move the game to multiplatform)
- The Wall (Little is known about the title but in a recent interview Play Ten revealed that The Wall will now be coming to the Xbox 360)
- Unreal Tournament 3 (Once only announced as a PS3 and PC title, Epic switched and now has Xbox 360 as a listed platform for 08)
- Virtua Tennis 3
- Virtua Fighter 5
The following list are major titles that could have been co-releases if Sony would have pushed out their development kits sooner and perhaps ponied up some money. However since they didn't, these are all titles Microsoft has gladly taken in as timed exclusives on the Xbox 360.
- Bioshock (We've been hearing that Bioshock may be hitting the PS3 this next spring)
- Medal of Honor Airborne (Out now on Xbox 360 but pushed back till November for PS3)
- The Elder Scrolls Oblivion (PS3 version a year later)
- F.E.A.R. (Delayed on PS3)
- Stranglehold (Delayed on PS3)
- Two Worlds (Two Worlds The Temptation is due out sometime next year, Top Ware is currently working on a concept piece for SCEA to approve)
- GRAW 2
- Rainbow Six Vegas
- Monster Madness: The EX
- Dirt
- Fight Night Round 3
Perhaps the list could go on, but as you can see Sony has missed out and cost the PlayStation 3 owners time, waiting for months while XBox 360 users are already enjoying the games. All I have to say is WTF Sony?

I am just upset with them not working hard on helping third party. I have to give it to Sony though for working on all their first and second party stuff....alot coming from there is excellent and overgoes anything I've seen from the MS or Nintendo camp.
But Sony needs to also make sure they don't lose anymore titles like Final Fantasy or Metal Gear

Ok a few things..we already know all this...but about those exclusives:
Assassin's Creed was available on pc before was it not? same go's for Devil May Cry 3 that shows that they already wanted to reach more people even while a lot of people owned a ps 2. and for some of the timed exclusives even though Oblivion was released a year later it wasnt just the same game. We got better graphics and the expansion knights of the nine (which might of been on 360 later that i'm not sure of). Basicly this is all nothing new and some of these are simply not sony's fault but more the choice of the developer to reach a greater audience.
Thats just my two cents... -

Knights Of The Nine was a PS3-exclusive (albeit timed-exclusive) for the PS3, that's why it's built in to the PS3 version. But it took so long to release Oblivion, that Knights Of The Nine was released to PC and Xbox 360 before the PS3 version of Oblivion even came out.

WTF is wrong with you Justin?! What the h*ell is the point here? Many of those games are coming to PS3 if not already. Please stop whining! And that headline??!!! WHAT THE F*UCK IS GOING ON?!
I hate to say this, but Justin your articles is a disgrase to PSU in my opinion.
Like it or not I say my opinion, this is a country of free speech.

Yes but what is the point of buying a PS3 if you can get the games sooner or better on the Xbox 360? I love my PS3, don't get me wrong...it's just that I am frustrated with the way Sony is handling it's third party developers. I wrote this feature to perhaps bring more concern to the subject....

timed exclusives don't really bother me. We still get the game, and I'd rather them come out later than to force out crap (Madden). I almost got a 360 for Halo, Madden and Ace Combat, but Warhawk came out and I don't really need Halo. I still may get it just because a lot of my friends have it.

Of course it's nice to have exclusives, but making a whole article leading to nothing new is ridiculous in my opinion.
PS3 is still very young and many things will happen over time, even soon. Haze, Tekken 6, Afrika, Eye of Judgement, Folklore, GT5 Prologue coming before 2008, and MGS4 coming very early 2008. And that's only 4 months. And we already have Heavenly Sword, Warhawk and Lair. And Home is coming soon too. So it's equal to 2 exclusives per month, which I think is very very nice.
I think Sony is doing very well for now. Okay maybe they could have made Heavenly Sword longer, but hey no one is perfect.

The thing is, the pS3 already has many exclusives. But some fans are not happy with that. They want exclusives that other console owners would be jelous of. And that is what it comes down too. I think that justin is echoing a sentiment of a very large group of people but personally I think its a little short sighted.
Besides you can tell he owns multiple systems. People who have only the PS3 aren't really interested in games that they already have or can get, they are just worried about the Quality of these games.

I totally agree with you on upcoming Sony titles. Like I said...I love my PS3 and I am very excited for what Sony has coming out. They have done a great job on first and second party software bringing all new titles to the platter.
However, Sony must also not forget third party. If Sony were to say lose Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid as exclusives are you saying that you wouldnt care? Cause both of these titles are on the hinge of becoming Xbox 360 titles and if Sony doesnt move quick, the developers could have a "break in contract" leading to these games being multiplatform

if u consider the amount of time the ps3 has been out and how long people have had to get to grips with the hardware it fares better in my opinion than the 360 in its 1st year, the 360 has had a whole year headstart people seem to forget that, next year you will see the difference and all these stupid conversations will cease to exist, its only just begun, RELAX PEOPLE!! :p

This article is not entirely right. Oblivion was delayed even for the Xbox what makes anyone think they could have reproduced it any faster than a year later on the completely unfamiliar hardware of the PS3?? All or most of the supposed games your list here would have gone multiplatform regardless because of development costs, whether it happened early or not is a moot point. Sony said upfront a year before the PS3 came out that dev costs were going to sky rocket and the devs didnt listen to them, that's why so many games are late and rushed on BOTH systems. Could they have spead up the release of dev kits? Sure there's always a need for these but if they dont have them you can't just magically pull them out of their behinds. The more I think about it the more I realize this article is hogwash as it completely ignores the fact that th PS3 would have been released 6 months earlier if not for production line issues and is just trying to lay blame,

Whoa, where do you get the on the "hinge" information from. Unless they are working for versions for the 360 at the same time it is not even a question about timed exclusive and right now, this is the point. There are very few fencesitters.
There are alot of people who don't want to part with the money for a PS3 until the game comes out. But lets say FF does go multi. I talked to quite a few people about this and the verdict comes back to me. Whatever system people are interested in, they will purchase it. So if you already have a 360 or want one then this is just good news for you. People who want a PS3 really don't care if it goes multi because they still would not buy a 360. And this is the type of responses I get all day.
Pretty much what if the development kits weren't done?

Its already been confirmed that The White Engine is multiplatform...and the person behind funding it....Mircosoft. I am not saying for sure that the titles are coming to the Xbox 360...I am just saying that MS is trying really hard to get them.

Sony can keep exclusives like if persona4 is announced at tgs 07, by it being on psone and ps2 its going to come to ps3 as well. Also , sony lost some of its exclusives because microsoft probably paid devs to cause the ps3 versions to be delayed which would be a sick and jacked up move from them.
Like stranglehold how it was suppose to release on time with the pc and xbox360 versions and how the collectors edition had hard boiled in hd on the same disc as the game on blu ray. I think microsoft is doing a nasty move using money its either that or sony themselves not giving devs dev kits in time or maybe its too complex to program for. In the end sony will shine Ps2 was hard to develope for look where thats at in sales now.

yeah the white engine is built for multi-platform square enix games but if ffxiii and versus release for the 360 everyone knows that dvd9 isnt enough and itll be at least 3 discs like how blue dragon was 3 discs for an rpg. But that new Tri-Ace game some original independent title Ifinite Undiscovery backed by microsoft and square enix is probably using the white engine as well but i m honestly ok with the xbox360 getting some rpgs from square enix, but Final fantasy is soley nintendo and sony forever the single rpg franchises of ff.

@Alpha2 I agree with you completely..So what that Sony didnt cough up extra $$$ for assasins creed..And 80% of that so called exclusive list doesnt mean $hit to the PS3.. Only Devil May Cry and UT3 if exclusive could've had moved units (and still can) But it clearly states.. The deve's opted to go multi platform, for their on $$$ intrests.. The other list of delayed games is nothing either.. Have of those games are already out.. So WTF is up with this article..

Sony this gen i honestly think they are more for developer support rather than paying tons of money to game devs to make a game exclusive. And developers that worked with sony exclusively in the past they are seeing this as like not a money thing but a thing of giving gamers what they want. Money can be good but used in the wrong ways it could make or break something. For microsoft it broke them with mgs4 the last game in the franchise how if it was multiplatform
i see no reason why microsoft should pay to try to steal that exclusive title from how the story evolved and sold well for Sony and mgs4 will sell well once again for sony.

Ok, sony needed to help their first party developers first, their the ones that will always make games exclusivily and deserve the most help right away. third partys would still make for all the first year because the first year for a counsole isnt the best year to release exclusives on, so now that the first parties have been helped a lot they can move to the thrid parties....and anyways we still have a nice bunch of exclusives coming out in the next year or so: Folklore, Unreal Tornement 3(timed), Uncharted, Haze, ratchet and clank, killzone 2, final fantasy 13 and vs. 13, Metal Gear Solid and more... just wait we will come out on top!

I think most people miss the point. The reason those games went multi and still are is because Sony's launch base is soo low. These games cost soooo much money to make and with Sony's install base soo low they simply can't afford to launch on one console. We will see a difference when Sony reaches a 10 million user install base. Once that happens and if and when they surpass Microsoft and there is a shift in the balance of power this gen Sony will be seen as a third class console. Devs worry about games....publishers and owners worry only about the money. And if Microsoft continues to have the lead and a substantial one (which until the price comes down they will) this will continue. These multi-platform games have everything to do with a small install base and nothing to do with Sony not giving support. Seriously that is simply the fact....and is why the companies keep crying to sony about the price. Lower it and get more people to buy ps3 and you will get your games. They say it every week on here if you read the articles. As for those games going multi....who cares. Games are made to be played. As long as Sony gets them and I can play them I don't care. It is when the PS3 is not lead platform on a game is when I get bothered...but those games are already well into development and there is no chance of your game being hampered by it going to the 360....just your stupid egos.

The idiots that're hating on the OP of the article, he's right y'know. Though I'm pretty sure the fanboys would rather read a site which 24/7 contains good news and facts about the PS3 while completely ignoring the bad stuff.
I commend the dude that wrote this article, and good on you for attempting to keep PSU unbiased and not following the ignorant retards that are perpetually opposed to reading the darker side of their beloved system.

Obviously some things could have been done differently and/or better for this first year of the PS3. Some of you folks are right about the early lack of installed units. To a certain extent some of the others are right about Sony not throwing enough money around. I may be blind, but things in the last few months seem to be turning around. We're not quite to 1 year anniversary yet. We'll see if Sony has corrected things by this time next year.
