Rumor: PS3 price drop to hit early 2009

According to an anonymous source that attended a Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing on Friday, SCEE's David Reeves revealed that from March 2009 onwards, Sony will be getting more competitive in price.
Reeves explained that the PS3 has a larger install base than the Xbox 360 in PAL territories, and that with a price drop the install base gap will significantly increase in 2009. A predictable move by Sony would be to drop the price on all systems and release a Killzone 2 bundle when the game releases early next year. Also mentioned were new "technological innovations" coming to the PS3 and PSP, though no specific details were provided.

With this being a rumor, no one is certain if this price drop is written in stone, much less defined in value.

I think that behind all this playstationess that this site represents, some of you are actually Xbox fanboys, starting with that dumbass article you guys made about the games "we" envy from the 360, and now this, before christmas, a rumor like will kill sony during the holidays, if there's going to be a price drop in march there's no scens in buying my kid, or myself, a new ps3 (I already have one 80gig with back compatibility). Shame on you psu.com for starting such a rumor, you should change your name to Xboxu.com already, you know you want to.

You know what though it's just about to late for Sony in this console war. Also don't know if anyone else knows it, but around this time when the last gen consoles came out they were doing much better. I don't mean around this time as in this year, but when the last gen's were atleast 2-3 years into the market sales weren't like this.

@3
ummm... I am sure that most people dont come to this site before they go out and buy CHRISTmas presents..... And, if they really want one, they are not going to wait till march for a "rumor"..
@5
This time last "war" sony was the one out first, with the cheaper system.... This is totally different... The PS3 is doing great for barely being out 2 years in NA and Japan, with only a few of the heavy hitters being out. 2009 is the Year of the PS3.

If this is true, then Sony is stupid for not having the price drop now instead of March. By March everyone who wanted a new console will have gotten one for Christmas, and with the 360's current price, most of those holiday sales will be going to Microsoft.
Do it now or don't bother.

@7 actually I knew they had the cheaper console, but in their first two years they had already atleast reached 30 mil if more or less.
I still think alot of this having to due with the variety of games out now. If you compare right now vs. last gen the games differ in a large amount.

Well if Sony is planning on dropping the price early next year, then why don't they drop the price by a little now to make it even slightly cheaper for the holiday season, which is now and take off the rest of the cost next year. You know instead of one big decrease, two little drops in cost. Wouldn't that help them better?

@3 - Well that's certainly an interesting interpretation, even if you're absolutely incorrect.
Regarding the "envy" article, you're not a true gamer if you don't respect good games, even if they're on other platforms. And with this article, we're simply reporting a rumor of a price cut that may or may not be factual; there's no malicious intent. Would you rather we not report rumors at all? (Serious question, not intended to belittle you)

@14 The name of the site is not truegamerunivers.com, I by the way own a 360 and a wii, and I understand what you say about not being a true gamer(I honestly do). Regarding your question, my answer is no, rumors are made to move the masses, and seeing as how we don't know who, if anybody, actually said that, it could all just be a hoax, to stomp ps3 selling this holiday season. It makes no sense anounsing (sp?) a price cut AFTER the holidays BEFORE the holidays, I know how paranoid and confusing that sounds, you could, however, shut me up by say who "anonymous" is. (Thank you very much for showing respect, you are obviously not a fanboy)

I question the credibility of the source. There should be more info on "Legends" or whatever he wants to be called.

Sony will sell the PS3 at its curent price for this holidays and hen all sales come back down reduce the price. Early Feb will be the right time as sales of PS3 will be at a all time low after December. But to early because new owners will be p*ssed. So late march will be perfect.

It's so much fun to watch sony fail this generation. Let's have a price cut after christmas (theres a great idea NOT). Just face it the day Microsoft entered into console gaming they would be taking over. Once the fad of the wii dies the 360 will be number 1!!!!!!!!!

Well if this is true I'm sure it will be great for all of those unwilling to pay the 300-400 bucks for a PS3. But I'm still sick and tired of the average consumer's inability to recognize the PS3 as worth every penny and then some. It was worth more than the $600 they were asking for it at launch and it's still worth more than the $300-$400 asking price. Wake up people! Sony stands for solid, high quality, dependable computer entertainment systems; so stop being so cheap and spend your money on something that's worth every one of your hard earned dollars. Or by all means you can go with the novelty toy Wii which has about the worst and most ridiculous line of games you can think of, or no wait!!! You can buy the 200 dollar white brick crapbox3fixme that has about a 60% chance of going RRoD on you. Now I wonder what the best choice is? Hmmm?

totally agree with c3rb3rus_9. i got mine at launch for £425, and i haven't once felt it wasn't worth every penny, especially now with firmware upgrades making it twice as good as it was when it came out. as for the year of the ps3, that was meant to be this year but it didn't happen. we might as well face up to it that the ps3 will always trail behind 360 in sales, but never in quality. the reason is most people have no desire for paying for quality. the console war never existed, there will be no winner. the day of one console complete dominance is over for at least 10 years. just like blu ray will never crush dvd. ps3 will never crush the 360. we should all slam the wii, i bought one two years ago and have only bought 3 games for it since, cos it sucks.

PS3 needs a price drop, especially here in the UK. Don't get me wrong, I own the console, have done since launch. I'm glad of my purchase, but even after slashing the price of the console from £425 to £299 it still seems a bit pricey (£170 more than the 360 Arcade Unit). I've just seen an amazing PS3 deal on game.co.uk...80GB PS3 with Motorstorm Pacific Rift, GTA IV, 300 Blu Ray and Transformers Blu Ray...£329. Now THAT's a good deal, it's a shame ADVERTISEMENT isn't in Sony's vocabulary.

I think people need to stop using the term "True Gamer". That's about as inaccurate as "True Jedi". Gamers are gamers, regardless of what they play. True Journalists haven't a need for idioms, Eric.
Besides, I think he was also referring to all the constant GeoW and Fable 2 ads PSU have been putting up on the top of the pages. I'm sorry. What site is this?

I could couldn't care less about the price drops, I'm really curious about the Tech innovations that are all hush-hush. Must be pretty big if they didn't get into it even in that SCEE meeting.
