Microsoft expecting PS3 price cut in the near future

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg has expressed the company’s surprise that Sony has yet to lower the price of the PlayStation 3, noting the expects the Japanese console manufacturer to reduce the cost of its black behemoth within the "next couple of months."
“We absolutely expect the PS3 price drop to happen in the next couple of months,” Greenberg told Edge, adding, “We’re frankly surprised it’s taken this long. … I would expect they’d have to move on price, sooner than later, for sure.”
Despite this, Sony seems content with sticking to its current price tag, with SCEE’s David Reeves recently announcing that profitability within the firms PlayStation Division is of paramount importance.

Sony doesn't need to because people would rather buy a 'slightly' more expensive console than the 360 Elite because it doesn't die on you and fart out 100F fumes in it's death spiral out the window.

and we care what microsoft thinks, why??? price tag of the ps3 may be a lot higher than the other consoles, and sure who doesn't love a price cut, but seriously, the price is perfectly fine for what you get. Price of an item usually reflects how good it is. nuff said

lol, i doubt they will do a price drop, they already have great games coming out like kill zone 2 and others. M$ don't know anything because all there xboxs die. but, if sony does do a 50- $100.00 price cut, it may help more people buy the console. you never know with sony.

No matter what anybody says, PS3 does need a price drop. Especially here in the UK, where the Xbox 360 Arcade model is available to purchase for £155 less (roughly $310)!! I'm happy that I have a PS3, but when I go in to town all I see is people walking around with new 360's and Wii's! A price cut would definantly boost sales, especially with the line up of excusive titles coming out soon.

Of course it needs a price cut, its too much and they would sell a lot more if they did. They should of done it before christmas, they would of brought heaps of PS3 users to the best console around. Why do people moan about a price cut just because Microsoft said it should be.....a price cut is good for all. It means more users, more money for game developers and better games.....sooner the better !

I love how everyone who responds to these threads is a marketing expert with an MBA. How can you say that a price drop is unnecessary unless you have actual experience with marketing products on a large scale, or at least have the education to back up your analysis?

MS doing their best to suppress PS3 sales by spreading rumours of a price drop. The fact is MS is losing even more money now in their games division since the price drop. You gotta love competition.

The guy isn't dumb. The competitor ALWAYS wants to say that their competition is going to do a price drop "right around the corner". This helps freeze those customers who would normally buy now. Having said that Micrsoft is about to lay off around 10,000 employees, and if the rumor is true it will happen in the next couple of weeks. I wonder if this guy will be around at the end of the month. Having said all this, EVERYONE agrees that Sony needs to drop the price of the PS3 ASAP. What is ASAP? Only Sony knows, but they are hurting very bad also, and my guess is that they can't take the hit anymore and they feel there are enough PS3's to warrant developers to develop for it and the 360 for now. My guess is that we will see a $100 price drop late next year OR a bundle and a $50 drop in price.

Well one of the reasons why the price cut haven't happened yet is because Sony is finally making money from every PS3 being sold. They are recuperating from all the losses they had with the PS3 originally. Now when production cost become even cheaper is when they will probably do another price cut.

If those idiots at M$ would stop and really add up all the hardware it would take to get the Xflop close to what the PS3 can do, it is well over $100 more than what you get when you buy a PS3.

I don't understand why Microsoft is so worried about Sony instead of working on getting something that's worth playing on the 360 for this year.Talk about priorities being out of order. No wonder they can not fix the bugs in Windows,Zune or the 360.

If it is true that the PS3 outsold the 360 for worldwide year end totals (yet again) then it makes all this talk of pricecuts seem funny. Didn't the 360 have "two" pricecuts in 2008?

If they want to make headway in the ridiculous console war, they need to lower the price right now to $299 and bundle it with LBP and a headset, and another bundle with Killzone 2 and a headset. Regardless, they need to push PS3s (hence the price drop I suggested), LBP (hence bundling it for free), headsets (hence bundling that for free), and Killzone 2 (again, hence bundling it).
However, if they want to, you know, stay afloat, then they need to leave the price as it is for now. They're already expecting layoffs and might even close a division or two. The PS3 is close to breaking even in price. They can't afford to drop it a significant amount yet. So maybe a more conservative way to spur some sales is a modest $50 price drop and a heavy marketing push for the PS3, for LBP, and for Killzone 2.

WTH, it's just like me saying that in the next 20 years we are going to have another war. Of course we will have a war in 20 years. I wouldn't doubt Sony for dropping prices in the next COUPLE of months. Who knows what MS's definition for a couple is. If the price drops in 6 months, MS is going to be like "I told you they would".

Well, as I commented previously, I forecast a price cut later this year but not until at least late summer. Microsoft forget to realise that the economic downturn is a red flag to everybody to buy something that will last the distance not to buy teenage fad cr@p and have to fork out each year just to play online. PS3 has a ten year lifecycle so that's what people will buy. Everybody knows that the 360 will have to be replaced soon. It's obscure architecture means it can't compete for much longer (yes I know that sounds crazy and backwards but trust me on this).
As for the "black behemoth" comment, only expect a white and pink behemoth to appear later this year to hump M$ and the ugliest console ever produced - nice to see Greenburg making a complete t!t of himself.
Sony still need to keep up the pace though. There's a lot of room for improvement on the software / network side to be done, but by the end of this year I think we'll start to see some real innovation in the firmware and online services.

Sony dosent drop their price in the toilet like MS just to sell systems. They drop it based on their own ideas and market planning. Every price drop they've ever done form the PS1 to the PSP has been the same way. If the product is selling there's no reason to drop the price.
Actually I dont expect to see a price drop until September, with possibly a new HDD and a pack in like Killzone 2.

I have the Launch 60gb PS3, and I paid $600 for it. At that time I though I got a great deal since the PS3 has a built in Blu-Ray and a Blu-Ray Player by itself back then was selling around $900, Plus I play online for free and not pay for a monthly or yearly subscription. Im proud of my investment not like my co-workers who bought the 360 and spent less but are on there 6th XBox and Im still on my 1st one. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

yeah this D-Bag would expect it but they dont need to because they dont have a POS system like microsoft has. they had to lower their price just so they can say "we have the lowest priced system out on the market that makes us the best" but you know what it doesnt. making a system that doesnt stop working after an hour is what makes you have a better system. so M$ keep dropping you prices and slashing jobs and us fanboys will keep enjoying our elite system with great games and bluray capabilities. @1, LOL, @15, yeah i said something simialr a few articles back about Sony NOT NEEDING a price cut, i even added up all the extra shi* you would have to buy just to make the 360 on level of the PS3, it came to about £425, which is £125 more than what the current PS3 is being sold for in our UK shops, plus you gotta pay an extra £40 a year just to play online, Microsoft are just Jealous, that in reality the PS3 is actually doing better than what they thought in this console war.

Regardless of what any of you pseudo-analysts have to say, the PS3 doesn't need a price cut...a price cute would, in fact, be detrimental to the success of the company...any idiot with the slightest clue on how to run a business knows that if you are LOSING money on a product that actually sells, you do everything BUT make it cheaper...bottom line...

The PS3 does need a price drop. But it makes me laugh that the guy from the competing company is stating when the price drop will be. Thats like me stating that i will get a pay raise in the next couple of months because, " Frankly Im surprised it’s taken this long...I would expect they’d have to give me a pay raise, sooner than later, for sure.”

so pathetic, if your arch rival in the gaming market said you were going to make a price drop in the next few months, would you do it? no, exactly, coz you would be afriad that people would think your listening to them so obviously you act all brave and dont give any price cut, which is exactly what they want them to do. they know Sony are under pressure and their turning up the heat when they should be focusing on the Wii instead of the console below them, sad B*****ds, cant admit their being beaten by nintendo, they have to keep turning to PS3 dont they

@39 Are this PSU? lol. Yes this is PSU, they're just reporting news related to Sony's console. If they only reported on official release statements from Sony, you would only get news to read once every 3 months.
On another note, yes Sony drastically needs a price cut. I know many people that are still on the fence about purchasing a PS3, but just won't make the leap because of the price point. It has nothing to do with not being able to afford it(although that is a problem for many people, especially right now) but about percieved value. They don't feel the PS3 offers anything worthy of the asking price. That seems to be the opinion of many consumers as well. If Sony drops the price by $100 USD, and get this done near the launch of a big title like KZ2, It would work out well for them. I don't see why they're being so stubborn about this. Price is something that's been killing them since launch(among other things). Why focus on profiting on the hardware, if they could increase they're market share by large margins, and really start bringing home the $$$ with software sales? That's where a majority of game divisions make they're money anyways. One example is the new COD, launch month it was the best selling PS3 title, as well as the top selling 360 title, yet the 360 release sold MORE than twice the amount of copies. This is due to a couple different reasons, but no doubt marketshare was THE determining factor. This not only sends a message to consumers, but more importantly the developers who are trying to profit from their titles. I can't think of any reason a price drop shouldn't be a reality very soon.

MYOB! This is what M$ need to do. And for all those that must fight over needing a price cut: NO! If you really cared about Sony & PS3 you wouldnt be complaing right now. It doesn't take an MBA in marketing to make a logical observation as to Sony's position. $3,000,000,000 in debt because of differences in production costs and retail price, plus keep n mind what the did at launch. If it costs too much for u just wait or get a second job if u cant wait. Stop complaining and don't fall for M$'s tricks.

Would have to wait till the RSX gets to 65nm process then maybe, how ever I reckon they'll drop the PS2 and wait till it sold out then drop PS3 price.
I would think that will make MS weep.
How ever the marketing strat is kinda interesting but it could also be a way to get MS onto PS news sites.

IMO as i stated in a previous thread, many first time buyers will not know of the subtle differences between the 360 and the PS3, they may not know if they PS3 is worth it's asking price, especially if you consider that the 80gb ps3 is almost £100 more than the 360 60gb in the UK.
When i bought my PS3 last year it was really just a whim because i had bought a new Bravia tv and wanted something to really plug into it, had that not of been the case i would have gone the xbox route because of the pricing.
I agree with posters 11 & 13, i also share many of the points raised, however dirty tricks from Microsoft aside i do believe the ps3 should have been reduced, it just seems to much more over it's nearest rival.
