March NPD: PS3 sells 218k, console sales below expectations

The NPD Group has unveiled the latest U.S. hardware figures for March 2009, revealing all three major home consoles sold below analyst expectations.
PlayStation 3 sold a total of 218,000 units last month, with both PS2 and PSP drumming up over 100,000 sales each.
Sadly, Sony’s black box found itself outperformed by Xbox 360 for another month, with Microsoft’s console selling 330,000, while the Wii remained top of the pack with a massive 601,000 units sold.
Looks like Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter’s earlier predictions were a tad too optimistic, then.

Wow. Even Killzone 2 couldn't help PS3 sales. In fact Killzone 2 had no effect on PS3 hardware sales at all. Halo Wars outsold Killzone 2 as well. PS3 really needs a price drop but I dont think Sony can afford to do it right now. Maybe by next xmas. Amazing that the 360 had no big games out and still outsold the PS3 by a huge margin.

For a system [Xbox 360] that has a massive lead in the US, compared to a system not as big in the US [PlayStation 3]. And is much more popular.
The Xbox 360 sold extremely poorly. Too bad idiots won't realise that. Such as Stoffinator.

You guys just don't get it...
218,000 X $400 = 87,200,000 (PS3)
330,000 X $200 = 66,000,000 (X360)
Add to that the info on attach rates we just got (more people buy more software for their PS3's), and you see that people are (and have been) spending more money on the PS3.

Please STOP, dont be blinded by the cutesy tv ads of people having fun, its not fun, its rubbish, it has rubbish games with which you have to play with rubbish un responsive controllers...........cmon people its just a fancy external cd rom drive that does a good job of making look an idiot in your own front room, even worse it makes you look an idiot in your friends front room too!

Now you might say "Well I see that, but what about the hardware sales? They are still selling more hardware!" Well, to that I say this...Look at the Wii. It sells and sells. There are no games on it worth playing. Explain that. Exactly. Don't worry, the hardcore gamer knows the games are on PS3. THAT'S WHY IT'S STILL COMPETING AT 2X THE PRICE. Now the real question is, will Sony change directions (ie SELL OUT) and start vying for that casual gamer $$$ that Nintendo rules and Microsoft is trying for?
And to the guy that compared Halo Wars' sales to Killzone's. We as PS3 gamers have choices. RECENT CHOICES for all genres. MLB 09 The show for the sports guys, Resistance and Killzone for the FPS guys, Infamous for the action guys. Our $$$ is split between our tastes. HALO WARS IS ALL THEY HAVE FOR NOW. Makes sense, doesn't it?

Sales are dissapointing but I don't think it really matters. Life is good for PS3 owners with all the great exclusives we have. LBP, Killzone 2, MLB 09, etc. The list goes on and on, while 360 owners are still playing Halo 3, and the only big thing they're waiting for is Assassin's Creed 2, which we'l get too. Hopefully we'll see a price drop or something soon though.

Totally unfair. I truly believe the 360 has a minimum value in comparison to the PS3, but for some reason in the US the don't think as I do.
Instead of looking at the abundant content and features you get, many americans are looking at the price tag alone.

people dont buy the wii and i reckon in the end ps3 should win this like generation but i dont know when theyll take over xbox and people stop buying the wii
and also at this rate we can assume about 1 million per 4 month which = abuot 3 million a year and cmoming into its 3rd yr this november wont that make 9 million units sold and yes i know its more than that ps3 needs another few months where it must of sold a quite a few units

well when people go down a shop to buy a console for the kids the just take the cheapest one- i seen it myself - people go look on the ps3 for ages then see the xbox and the price and they go home with that one. adult people who just buying for their kids dont care what games ps3 get etc.

O_G_H is right about his numbers, ps3 is twice as much as the arcade and STILL sales really well. Xbox makes you spend much more on accessoires to equal up to what the ps3 gives you, and americans look at the price tag alone.
Xbox arcade + Wireless adapter + Rechargeable battery + 1 year XBL = $380 with the fact XBL is a yearly cost that will exceed the ps3 price. oh and it dosent have a HDD or blu-ray player. hmm
im no fanboy, i own a ps3 and a wii, brother has xbox, but people need to start looking at value vs price tag.

what you guys dont understand is that in the usa there is no need for advertisment on the 360. If you go to any barber shop, or any other place were men usually hang out there talking about there 360 and there gamertag id. There trading gamertag id's like phone numbers and to be in the "IN" crowd you need a 360. Try joining one of those conversations offering you psn id. They will look at you like your crazy. The ps3 will never catch up at this point and thats dissappointing because i stay in america and realize the ps3 is WAY BETTER!

Most people never seem to understand that the Xbox360 has a huge lead in the US for the fact that it was released first. Okay, so, you have a console out in November of 2005, then a year later, the competitors introduce their new console. Inbetween that year, there are going to be sales, games that people love, and possibly one price drop. There you have it, the 360 starts to lead in North America.
Then you have the continent of Asia. How's the 360 doing there? Poorly. Why? Because not really anything they have appeals to them. Then theres the PS3, which is totally kicking owning there because of the games that appeal to the audience in that country.
It just matters on where the console is introduced to, and what games it offers for the audience it favors.
And the PS3 is not doing bad for a console introduced in '06 at all. Its sta closing that margin of sales between it and the 360.
At least that is the way I view it.

So because the PS3 doesn't sell as much as the 360 it fails? I think the PS3 is doing fine for a system that is worth 100 dollars more and also a year newer than the 360. It doesn't need a price drop to satisfy anyone here. They think they are doing well enough at the moment. Face it, someone has to have less sales. If the 360 was selling less, would they suddenly drop their price 100 bucks? Doubt it.

Sony is making more money that Microsoft even though it's not selling as much HW in the states. It's still selling software.
What I want to see is the numbers of IU, LR,and SO4 . I will bet you KZ2 outsold them all worldwide.

I don't know why this is such a suprise. As bad as the economy is people will go for the cheaper counsole not because they don't like the ps3 but because they can't afford it. If they new the quality of the hardware it would be a different. Some people look at the ps3 and 360 and the only differeces they see is one has blu-ray and the other doesn't. Sony needs to give a reason for people to buy ps3s and that reason is GOW3.

@12 its a ps fan site maybe u should try a multi plat site if your that bothered,oh and please stop putting killzone 2 and playstation 3 down every chance u get.stop being a fanboy yourself and look at the wii sales instead of 360 this n 360 that cause they destroyed the 360.these are U.S. figures only.ps3 actually makes more money then microsoft do in sales and beats or matches the 360 worldwide.aint bad for a year late to the party.

I'm suprised how much the box sold. Could it be because of RE5? At anyrate, the PS3 number isn't super terrible considering the going price and the economic crapper we are in.
Personally I many of my friends who like gaming but aren't hardcore into it end up going to box for 2 reasons
1.) Price
2.) The voice chat feature (the fact you can actually keep communicating no matter what your doing).
I really think Sony needs to focus on community features and games (by games I mean ensure ALL games ahere to the community standard, even older ones...somehow) , then they can add bells and whistles. Once this is done, I think they will get better word of mouth.

hummm well I guess you can understand why people are deciding to buy the 360 more than the PS3, when you consider the cost of both machines. I know the PS3 does a lot more than than the 360, but if you just want a a Hi Def Games Console the 360 is far cheaper.........definitely time for some sort of PS3 price cut i thinks

all xbox owners i know have bought it because its cheaper and because of Halo 3. as one guy said they dont look at the features of the PS3 or the variety of games it has so far it has like 10 excusives while xbox only has 2 good ones.

Look on the bright side, he was only off by 17.5% for the 360 and 25% for the Wii

is it too wishful to think PS3 will dominate worldwide just like PS2 did? (North America, Europe, and Asia)
I truely believe PS3 will dominate again worldwide; so far PS3 can't seem to dominate USA, not even North America just USA
one day, even USA will be dominated by PS3. I just hope that day is soon *cough* price drop announcement during this year's E3 *cough*
