PSP outsells all rivals in Japan for first half of '08

Enterbrain has published hardware and software sales figures in Japan for the first half of fiscal year 2008. The PlayStation Portable tops the list, fuelled by Monster Hunter Freedom 2nd G's success and a string of quality RPG releases.

Sony's pint-sized technological terror notched up an all-conquering 1,583,731 sales, bringing the console's installed base in Japan to 10,157,757 - the Nintendo DS was next in the running with 1,314,919 (23,484,680 in total). While Mario Kart Wii was the most profitable game overall, the aforementioned Monster Hunter lead the handheld software charts with 1,602,386 sales.

The PlayStation 3 isn't looking quite as healthy as its portable sibling, selling a mere 352,457 units (2,361,949 in total) as against the Wii's 1,105,174 (6,800,753). Predictably enough the Xbox 360 fared even worse, with a barrel-scraping 138,740 - Microsoft's console has yet to break a million sales in the Land of the Rising Sun.

The data was collected between March 31 and September 28 2008.

We need 2009 to get here. @2 is right. Wii is kicking our butt. But in 2009 that should change.

does anyone feel MS should just give up on the Japan market and focus on other markets.

Thats great news for the PSP. I will have to wait till the new 3000 model comes out to purchase a new one. I still love my PHAT one.

The Wii is still kickin ***, I havn't played mine in a good while, the wife loves wii fit though. They should do a survey on how many women vs. men enjoy the wii. Ha that sounds funny,"I havn't played with my wii in a while". Japanese with the naming crap again.

more rpgs for ps3 = more ps3 owners espcially in japan

Wait until Sony announces all their exclusive J-RPGs and they'll be picking up the PS3 almost as much as the Wii.

i'll be added to the psp on my next 2 paychecks i get, i'm buying it mostly to watch movies on and some games and remote play from ps3. i'm not really sure how that works though. . . . . . . . . .
