Nintendo: PS3 outsold 360 in 2008

In what surely must be the height of commercial cheekiness, Nintendo has opted to publish both its own and rival hardware sales figures for Europe in 2008. The Wii, you'll be astonished to hear, has triumphed in the home format arena with around 10.4 million units sold, while its clamshell colleague the DS put paid to the PlayStation Portable.

Of more interest to PSU readers will be the relative standings of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. According to Nintendo, the former has stomped all over the latter so far this year, with only Microsoft's recent price slash prodding the pasty meltdown machine into the lead in October.

Sales peaks for the Nintendo consoles came in April, with the Wii selling 180,000 units as against 90,000 apiece from its high definition competitors, and July, when the DS sold 225,000 units to the PSP's 50,000. There's still the Christmas season to come, of course, but much as we love our PS3s and PSPs we doubt they'll be stealing a late victory over the big N.

I just want to say nintendo has never been in the run for a win in the console war because this war is about the hardcore consoles I have never seen the wii as a threat because even though its about gaming its not in the same market as the PS3,casual gamers will always be more than us but it is the hardcore gamers who will determine the winner of this war,so well done to the wii!

I have to say good going Nintendo.  I honestly thought that Nintendo were goners with the Game Cube being a complete failure, Microsofts entance into the market and the back then new Wii and DS looking like they would not stand a chance.  Boy was I wrong.  Anyway with ps3 sales being just about neck to neck with 360 sales just imagen whats going to happen when Sony do eventually, at some stage drop the price.

Well now it looks like the people who got 360s are moving to PS3 why? because their consoles have overheated and they now realise that the 360 is a piece of junk.

Well well well... seems like 360 users (like one of my friends) started figuring "Hey... it's not because I don't want to play, this damn thing just won't turn on!!!" And then they go buy a PS3 ;)

Cab't be too long untill the several million Wii owners go "Wait a minute! This isn't fun or exercising, this is just swing to the left for the A button, and swing to the right for the B one...". And then they will also buy a PS3 (or 360 to do the aforementioned thing, and complete the cycle that ends with Sony :P)

hmmm i must say tho,, considering the 360 as been out alot longer,, and dont have a blueray player.. it is still out selling the ps3 leading into Oct......i would of hoped that the ps3 past *** ups would be sorted by now and it would be out selling the 360 by now.. still it as xmas coming so lets hope the ps3 can over take it then.. before the new xbox console comes out in 2 years..  oh and please note.. that the ps3 will out live blueray,,, as blueray is being replaced in 3 years time..

but if you want to be a real hardcore gamer,, could always spend 700 on a gameing PC,, and get a proper high rez Monitor, instead of a HDTV, after all...720p and 1080p is old now :),, and blueray is being replaced in 3 years..

So where are the game sales figurs.  That is where the real money is made. I bet Nintendo won't be on top in that category.

"pasty meltdown machine" ...? is the writer of this 5 years old? Just because you write for a playstation fansite doesn't mean you need to go slagging off the competiton. You just sound like your regular old fanboy mate

only reason the WII is so far ahead is because it launched at $250.....

I just hope people will start realizing you get what you pay for.  The crapbox 360 is cheap for a reason, it's a pile of garbage.  The PS3 not only has better features but is far more rugged and of higher quality of manufacturing.  To prove my point, check out this video from G4TV's Xplay where The Pumphrey Brothers from Human Wrecking Balls test how much punishment the consoles can endure before capping.   Note the 360 doesn't make it past round one.  www.g4tv.com/xplay/features/34776/All_Access_Console_Destruction.html

Question for everybody.  Throw your opinion out:

    *

Will we be playing Wii games 3 years from now?  What about PS3 and 360?  Will the 10 year-olds that have Wiis now want to play Wii games in 3 years?  What about PS3 and 360?

    *

@10 If people balk at paying for a PS3 and are jumping on the chance to get a Wii or a $200 Stink60, what makes you think a Gaming PC that will be obsolete in a year and a half (MY gripe with PC gaming) is an option.  Next time, think first.

What, an idiot? Well excuse me sir but i fail to see how that might have any relevance as to what i said. If you want me to articulate my point differently, I shall say that it is working in a unprofessional manner as it is clearly showing bias toward a console. I come here for news, not to be treated with this console wars Bull.

Wii continues to be a fad with no games worth the price of the system it seems. The DS is rife with piracy so the system sells like hotcakes.

But yeah It's about time the PS3 started getting it's due in the EU.
