Resident Evil 6 could take up to eight years, says Kawata

Capcom’s Masachika Kawata has admitted that development of Resident Evil 6 could take anywhere in the region of four to eight years.

Speaking to The Gadget Show, the Resident Evil 5 producer confirmed that a sixth instalment in the long running horror franchise has yet to be decided, hinting that fans may have an arduous wait on their hands.
“We haven’t decided whether we’re going to make Resident Evil 6 yet,” said Kawata “But if we do, it could take anywhere up to eight years, but hopefully only four.”

All we know so far is that Resident Evil 6 will offer a complete overhaul for the series, though quite how Capcom intends to go about this is anyone’s guess. The company previously hinted that there's a chance the zombies may make a return, though for all we know it could be something entirely different altogether.

Stay tuned.

    No.1

This doesn't really make any sense, in one instance they say its not decided if there is even gonna be a No.6, and in another its rumored that zombies may make a return. Not only that but on what basis is this 4-8 years?  its not based in any reality as far as i can see, its just a number plucked out of the air.

Well thats ridiculous, and ok in a way. They've said they're going to completely re-shape the series with the 6th if they make it (again), and there prob will be loads of hype with a trailer that will come out and will take years to make (like killzone 2), but 4 - 8 years is a bit much.

An estimate is just an estimate, however an estimate of 4-8 years is taking the mick. Also, 8 years seriously? Are they making it for the PS3 or the PS4?

  7. Intervention

    • 4:01am EDT - March 25th, 2009

There is no way it would take that long, not only because of possible spin offs. Like we have seen in the past, but because there is way too much money to be lost by hesitating.

    • 4:19am EDT - March 25th, 2009

If it takes that long it will suffer the same as RE5 as not being anything new.  For years we heard about RE5 but when it came along games like Uncharted, MGS4, Gears of War and KIllzone were already here and had surpassed it before it was even released.  If Capcom want to make an outstanding game they should not start relaxing now, they should start making RE6 right away.

    • 4:20am EDT - March 25th, 2009

Yeah, if its gonna be an overhaul, I dont think 6 is going to be at the end of the title, imo.  Secondly, I honestly believe Capcom has really shot their wad with SF4 gaining new ground with some fans not previously into fighters (me), and losing fans of the old itinerations that dont like it for some reason.  RE5's dev cost must have been ridiculous, and we really dont know if its gaining Capcom any profit yet.  If I were in Capcom's shoes right now, I would "rent" out the rights to another developer, and see what they come up with (spinoff), it may lead to new and fresh ideas.

A resident evil per system. They still have to wait for the next gen system and start working on it.  The only thing they can do now is to design the concept, the storyline and so on.

Other than that I probably be married by then hahaha

@biolol, I second that notion. I wouldn't shed a tear if I never saw another Resident Evil. Capcom should try their own 'Heavy Rain'.

    • 6:36am EDT - March 25th, 2009

it shouldn't take 8 years.  If it takes 8 years to do an overhaul of a game, then they should just stop making this game and stick to Street Fighter.   It's already been proven quite a few times that the longer a game takes doesn't mean it's going to be great.  Infact, it causes people to get overhyped the closer those games get that take damn near forever.   4 to 8 freakin years, arg.   Kawata doesn't make any sense, "but if we do, it could take anywhere up to eight years, but hopefully only four."

    please give Kawata the boot.

this only makes me feel more worried in the software-per-generation departamanet.

i'm afraid that a trend seems to have started to have only one big game per series on each generation of consoles (be it a sales manuever or a development times issue)

will we have metal gear 5, god of war 4, gran turismo 6, resident evil 6, and so on, on our current machines? or will we have to spear another $500 to enjoy those games?
outside the sony machine, how about a new zelda game on the wii? gears 3, halo 4, etc on xbox 360)

if ps3 really has a lifespan of 10 years, then we only have 7 more. doesn't seem like enough time (according to the ultra-detail-machines that are todays developers) to have sequels of our favourite games on this expensive generation of consoles.

remember, we had 2 gran turismos on ps and ps2 each. 3 re on ps, 2 metal gears on ps2, same with god of war, etc. it will be really disapointing (and not pocket friendly) if we have to buy a ps4 to play gow4 or mgs5...

i don't know if this is true, but certainly as gamers, we shouldn't allow this to happen...

8 years because Capcom will find a way to compress and squeeze 30 or 40GBs on a DVD9 for the 360. PS3 users will get the usual 360 budget game but on a blu-ray.

Okay guys.. I think that this whole thing is a scheme by Capcom. I know they have the success they wanted from Resident evil 5, AND 4. I think they are just telling us that it's going to be way off, just to get us to move on and forget about it... then, way sooner than we know it, BAM resident evil 6 is coming! I think it's a marketing ploy. I think that'll get them a surge of buyers to ensure further success. Think about it... if they used this method, they'd be the first! Everyone would be so darn shocked and surprised and excited that I believe, all of us here, would rush out and preorder/buy it. They gave is early news of Resident evil 5 and we watied a long time (in this fast paced world) for it to come. The excitement was seeded  into us early on. I'd say they took enough time to know that resident evil 5 would be a hit. Add that to what reserves they might have had left from 4. They probably started working on the 6th right away and I bet you it's further along than we all think. There's no law saying that they will tell the truth when interviewed.

Capcom did other things in the meantime. Let's not forget that they are the makers of street fighter... they did the HD thing to ressurrect streetfighter and catch that whole fanbase of older fans. They've been doing their homework. I think that they are SLICK.

If they are barely getting by.. why make an off the wall game? A NEW game???? DARK VOID! I think they have more than we think they have as far as funding. Resident Evil 6 will be here sooner than we think! Another point...

Why would they be so quick to say that, all they know, is that Resident evil 6 will be completey reshaping the franchise???? If it was going to take them that long, they'd be telling us things to try to make us more patient. Such as... "All I can say is, "you will see familiar faces such as Claire Redfield, Barry Burton etc. etc.

Don't fall for this! They wouldn't take 4 to 8 years. I think they are going to drop a bomb on us in the form of a surprise. Just ask yourself... would it be smarter to take your time on something if you are finding success, or if you are trying to get something perfect in fear that you may put yourself in a deeper debt hole?  The biggest risk they could possibly take at this point in time is telling die hard fans that it'll take forever basically. But to tell people this, and then release it faster than they believed it would be, would still keep ahold of the die hards.

in my opinion yeah 4 and 5 were THE BEST!!!! they got me really into the games but they still arent worth waiting 8 yrs for 4 still pretty long but in 8 yrs i will be 22 and prob. will have totally forgotten about the game series...i mean really an 8 year wait would be tedious and annoying i say if it takes 8 yrs then find a new addicting horror game series to get addicted to (it hurt to say that) i mean really wesker died who would be the

I think resident evil 6 should have the same (if not EVEN BETTER) great graphics and gameplay as resident evil 5, EXCEPT they need to stop putting \\\'\\\'parasite infected\\\'\\\' controlled people that shoot at you. RESIDENT EVIL took away the whole meaning of zombies when they started giving them guns and speech. I think, ( along with MANY OTHERS) That resident evil 6 should be a remade mansion type game, (like the first resident evil mansion game for gamecube). NOW THAT would be a true and FREAKY resident evil game. Old creepy mansion, middle of nowhere, no backup, slow walking flesh etaing rotten zombies, PS3 GRAPHICS, ohh the public would just EAT IT UP! :) i wish i could help the design team.

i have awsome ideas for resident evil 6 yet im only 16 if they're reading this they shouldnt hav a computer to be at your side 24/7, bringing back chris was an awsome idea but to hav a black chick to be your partner or to hav the entire game based on africans. what they need to do is to bring back leon and ada plus their story was never finished, bring back the el giante but more than 1 at least 4-6, mabe 10 more bosses, dont include the killer dogs unless your bringing back the t and g virus, to be honest i think they should bring back the zombies infact bring back las plagas

If Capcom takes that long to make R.E. 6, then they aren't very passionate about making it. They should get off their lazy bums and start on it now, or everyone is going to lose the excitement, and as some have already stated, other games are going to surpass them. There is NO reason why it should take Capcom that long to make R.E. 6. Let me in on this, I bet you ANYTHING that if I were working with Capcom that game would be done in no more than 2 years. And that's not because of the storyline, I could come up with that in no time, and it would be great! Cause I know how R.E. 6 should go, but I doubt Capcom is going to be awesome enough to make that a reality. I'm going to be honest, they should bring back the good characters. Claire should be in it, so should Chris, and Jill. Tricell are the baddies, cause Umbrella has pretty much lost everything with the death of Spencer and Wesker. And Steve Burnside should come back helping the bad guys cause Wesker created a version of himself after taking Steve's body to extract what was left of the Veronica T-Virus. And then Claire tries to talk sense into Steve, it's difficult, Chris doesn't know if this is going to work and says they should take him out [or atleast get him weakened enough to talk], Jill should be there as backup... yaddayaddayadda... Bring anyone else you want I guess, but that's how it should go down. Leon can even be in it for all I care, I just think it would be good! It would only make since that Steve would come back as the new Wesker, cause Wesker hinted at it in Code Veronica-- and quote
