Sony has 'captured the hardcore' with PS3, says Koller

Sony’s John Koller has declared that the platform holder has successfully nailed the hardcore gamer audience with PlayStation 3, with the firm now keen on pursuing the casual user base over the next couple of years.

Speaking to VG247, Koller stated, “There’s certainly a line-up of very strong family-friendly titles that we’re looking at for PS3 in our continuing effort to appeal to that casual consumer.”

Of course, that’s not to say the firm has all but given up on hardcore fans. Far from it, Koller noted, as there’s a plethora of meaty offerings on the way including the likes of Heavy Rain and God of War III, not to mention fresh IP to boot.

“We’ve captured the hardcore. The install base we have now tells us that the hardcore’s purchased. We’re moving on now to continue to support them with a tremendous line-up of games, but also look at softer brands that maybe we had with PS2 franchises we’re bringing over to PS3, or new IP.”

Though he remained tight lipped as to what we could expect to see other than the usual suspects, Koller teased: “Think of some of the latter-half PS2 franchises.”

We’ll find out soon enough come E3 2009. Stay tuned.

@3 Yes I agree, Sony is doing better than most people think. I still don't know why they only post the North American sales for the 360 and Ps3, everyone knows the USA isn't the world and PS3 is doing much better globally.

If there was ever anything true said by these guys, this is it.  The PS3 is the hardcore gamer machine.  What EVERYBODY foound out this generation is the hardcore is NOT where the money is at.  Having said that, I'm glad Sony didn't sell out like Nintendo and Microsoft.

I paid $800 back then. It was worth every penny. I'm happy it cost me $800, because I know the PS3 has the best hardware and the best first party software to back it all up.
