PS3 10-year plan isn't 'spin', says Sony's Peter Dille

Sony America’s senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille has asserted that the firm is ‘serious’ about its commitment to a 10-year lifecycle for PlayStation 3, after conceding some industry folk may pass it off as 'spin.’
“I hope that people know by now that we are serious when we talk about 10-year product lifecycles. I don't know; maybe sometimes guys in your business think that it's spin. If it were spin, you wouldn't have PS1 and PS2 doing it; we're the only company that's ever done it,” Dille told Gamasutra.
The executive went on to state that Sony is confident PS3 will remain viable over the next decade, though cast doubt as to whether it’s competitor’s would follow suite.
"So when we say we take a long-term view, we firmly believe that the PS3 will not only be around in 10 years but it'll be driving the business - driving this industry. I don't know if our competitors' platforms will still be viable in 10 years; I do know that the PlayStation 3 will be."
"... we're off to a strong start, I think; you can look at our PS3 sales versus the 360 after two years, and I think in that measure we're ahead of them," he added.
While admitting the platform holder has become accustomed to being market leader, Dille said that the firm has set its sights on ‘bigger victories’ in the years to come:
"... we look at our performance last year with PS3 sales up 40 percent, and we're happy with that - and yet we're accustomed to being the leader in the business, so we're not happy enough," said Dille.
"We have our sights set on bigger victories ahead and believe that we've got the plan to make that happen."

The most honorable thing I've heard someone say all day...it's refreshing, in a way, to hear a Sony exec talk like that, especially if you want them to do well personally...

that was a very down to earth comment basically he said ps3 isn't doing badly but yes we are aiming to be market leader, and also im glad they're being patient and keeping their head in times like this. I absolutely think ps3 will be viable and maybe even continue to push the market for 8 more years simply because the ps3 has the technology to do that and theres so much more growth that could happen on the social networking side with home and psn.

More Sony PR spin. 360 is wiping the floor with PS3 right now so what else can Sony say? Sony has to support a 10 year plan considering the staggering losses they have taken on PS3.

LOL @ the Microflop defense force and their stupid damage control comments. Like someone already stated, these idiots have nothing to be brag about apart from sales data. And it's not like those numbers are anything special to write home about.
On topic, I am glad SONY thinks this way. That's how a true market leader speaks! Maybe they know something (*ahem* 360 abortion coming very soon *ahem*) that we don't officially know yet. Many things can happen in the next couple of years but it sure does look like SONY will be once again the market leader in sales when the dust settles this generation. SONY is already the leader when it comes to quality games this generation and it will only improve as developers learn to harness PS3's great power.

what the heck is "spin"? Like it's been said before each PlayStation has lasted 10 years and a slimmer version of each console has been released and as usual I still have the original version of each console in top condition. In 3 years I expect a slim ps3 to be announced and in 5 years there should be announcement of psp 2. in fact I can remember 3 years after the release of ps1 there was speculation of a ps2. So I'm guessing " spin " is supposed to be repeating what they did before?
