Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV took everyone by surprise at Sony’s press conference on Tuesday. While it was announced the new MMO will be a console exclusive to PlayStation 3, Square Enix’s press conference today revealed the possibility the game will release on other platforms.
Speaking at Square’s conference, director Nobuaki Komoto and producer Hiromichi Tanaka discussed an assortment of details on the game, which is scheduled for release next year on PS3 and PC. An early comment that the team is “considering all options at this time, including Microsoft hardware,” certainly alludes to a possible release on the Xbox 360. Square's decision will likely have a lot to do with the hardware required to run the game.
Fans of the MMO Final Fantasy XI will get an entirely new game as FFXIV is set in a brand new world, however; players will get to choose similar races from the older game. Also, Square will continue to release content for FFXI over the next year.
Casual gamers will have a home with FFXIV as Square is taking what the industry has learned from World of Warcraft, and expanded upon it with its own unique style.
The company is also planning a simultaneous release worldwide with English, Japanese, German, and French versions available at launch. Friends across the world may be able to play together as Square is looking to launch the game with cross-region and cross-platform servers.

I would love 2 faction. Ps3 vs 360 users. That would be funny.

Sony would have won with or without that announcment.

Cross-Platform Servers is what every Multi-Platform game should have dont you all think... It would be the Ideal Online way to play. The consumer picks their system of choice and we can all still compete. Just Imagine!!!!

FFXIV looks STUPID

I think...the matrix is real...
Other than that, I think that cross server on platforms.....would be awesome.

@7 well i'm glad that you think that way. Since this way it means you probably wouldn't get the game and that would mean one less, for lack of a better word "n00b" playing this game.

@4. that would be brilliant lol.
- 5:43am EDT - June 4th, 2009
Lol. I knew it couldn't be. I played XI on PC, 360, PS2 and PS3 (sorta). But if any game SHOULD be Xplatform, it's this one..

Probably waiting to see if Microsoft will come along with a bag full of money....pfffft, pathetic.

Oh, I forgot to fufill my promise of mentioning this when ever naieve people talk about 3rd party exclusives:
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN EXCLUSIVE UNLESS IT'S 1ST OR 2ND PARTY. IF SONY DOESN'T DEVELOP OR PUBLISH IT, CONSIDER IT MULTIPLATFORM.
Please accept this so we can cut down on the whining. By the way, I meant what I said about this game NEEDING to be multiplatform. It's FF-online tradition.

Five years of devellopement... there will be probably a ps4 on the market loll.
- 6:52am EDT - June 4th, 2009
@14 They said it has been in deelopment for 4 to 5 years not that it will be in development for 4-5 years, as they said it will release next year.
Also a timed release for ps3 is not bad. It is exactly what ffxi did. Plus the multiplatform server is great. I always played on my pc while my buddy played on ps2.
I am also glaf they are adding a solo play to it. If you didnt have a dedicated group it could take you a long time to get a group. There were times I just didn't feel like playing with anyone but jsut wanted some quick leveling.

Awesome! Going to get it for PC though!
- 7:17am EDT - June 4th, 2009
To be honest, it wouldn't really surprise me if it did go multi-platform...
But it would be nice if they did manage to set up a server link between the 360 (and possibly PC) with the PS3 so we could all play together; it'd make the experience much more enjoyable having millions to play with rather than thousands.

OMG the things ppl post, how childish. Did you guys really think SE wasnt going to release their MMO on X360 and/or PC.
Anyway, This is awesome news, the more ppl get to player FFXIV the better. And as a former FFXI-player I know the MMO-FF-community rocks. Cant wait to play this new MMO.
And oh for you cry-boys, it`ll prolly be released on Nintendo`s next console too (Wii-HD?)

Tilt to move, nunchuck to use sword/spells
anyways, i want a 360 and to get money, sell my wii

Good. we're all in agreement then, it should be multiplat. If it's a timed exclusive though, it will su.ck fo rthat console to be late to the party. Also, do you vets think the in-game translator is coming back?
