Sony’s Europe exclusive PlayStation Network free streaming music service, VidZone, is slated to launch tomorrow, June 11, with an enormous amount of content available right away. It will offer around 10,000 videos at launch, and Sony promises much more is on the way.

The PS3 service will include tracks from major artists like Fatboy Slim, Pussycat Dolls, Pink, and Black Eyes Peas, along with bands on independent labels, concerts, and behind the scenes footage. You can use your PS3 to play, pause, and rewind the service’s streaming music videos. You’ll also be able to create music playlists and create your own audiovisual library.

There's still no word on a potential North American release.

So uhh, how is this not a gimped youtube? It appears to me that all of this streaming is currently available to anyone with access to a computer, but with the added capabilities of watching any type of video content.

I suppose it's only accessible on a PAL PS3. I was hoping to log in to my fake UK account to see what was going on.

    Correction :

VidZone music service coming to small part of Europe tomorrow.

Only a handful EU countries will get this service.  The majority won't.

I wonder how US would react if only the some of the eastern states would get a service and the others don't.

    • 3:21am EDT - June 11th, 2009

it's the 11th today in Aust and not released.

Maybe on the 12th?  who knows.

I already though the US had a music and a TV/movie service anyway,  where as europe/australia doesn't have any of that.

Also in Home the US version has free music voting thing where as the Euro Home doesn't have anything like that.

Sony have a really bad policy when it comes to this kind of thing.  The PSN should have the exact same content worldwide no matter where you are.  I live in Ireland and i look forward to checking this out but EVERY PS3 owner should have this!

    • 6:58am EDT - June 11th, 2009

    @Zadok

This is not a gimped youtube, because it's an official music video streaming service.  This service can only be accessed using a Playstation 3.  Not  "anyone who has a PC".  The music video's are not just copies uploaded off MTV, they are the real deal, so quality will be better, not to mention playlist ability.  This will be absolutely awesome for parties.

Also it's free so stop f***ing complaining.

And if you need caps lock to find the word free, you need attention classes.

    • 7:20am EDT - June 11th, 2009

So how is this going to be available? Will there be small firmware update and then some shortcut icon to this service appears or what?

  28. HalfOfZero

    • 7:24am EDT - June 11th, 2009

    Free..... For how long?

I dunno, what's gonna be the catch?

  29. O_G_H

    • 7:27am EDT - June 11th, 2009

@28  That's not fair.  They companies rarely market something as free and then charge.  My guess?  Rampant advertising.  Or maybe they see it as a way to get new music out to people (which is more direct advertising).

For all the Euro Heads... You should know by now content that gets released on Thursday always appears on Friday... SOn really should release the content Wednesday so they actually do come through on Thursday but yea, Vidzone will be there 2morro on Friday. Correct me if I'm wrong?

    F.A.O. Sony.

Please cancel EVERY SINGLE PLAYSTATION 3 PROJECT you are working on for the E.U.  It is pointless to do anything good for them, because all they will do is whine and moan about it.  Free music videos apparently suck because you have not managed to put out the video store in the E.U.

I'd like the movie store in the E.U. as well, but frankly, I'll not use it other than as a "new toy" before moving onto buying Blu Ray.

Vidzone allows you to stream all music for free!  You can BUY tunes for your phone etc... THIS is where they will make money.  Not to mention the fact that the streaming is essentially like watching a music channel where you can pick and chose your records.  This is known as direct advertising!

Record labels PAY for this kind of exposure.

mcav u are just stupid or what?

SONY thinks europe is only 6 countries its annoying u think something is coming coz sony says its com9ing to europe blah blah then u go for download and its not there ...wtf?? i see my psn friends using it first time in my life im mad at sony.

  37. MrAce

    • 12:48pm EDT - June 12th, 2009

I've just downloaded this and it is very cool.

@Mcav what you said in post 35 about cancel projects for eu. Don't be a retard, just because a handful of people choose to complain, why should the majority suffer? (Not that sony are going to give a d@mn what you say anyway).

    • 4:05pm EDT - June 12th, 2009

WOW!!!! Thank you Sony,  this is an awesome service and its FREE  @1 ;)

(Just some small banner ads... I can deal with that)

I live in the US and try to use the service. Sad to say it did not work.  Looks so awsome...wish I could use. Hopefully it will make it to the US in the future.

Downloaded and installed using my UK account but apparently it picked up on my NTSC device and told me that the service is only available in France, UK and some other countries.

Ever wonder if the SCEE and the Japanese division are trying to one-up each other? Just seems really inconsistent to have features like this only availalbe in certain countries. I understand certain games don't work in certain countries but a service like music videos should be pretty universal. Oh well. I guess us Yankees will have to wait for Sony to ink a deal with MTV before we get something similar.

"VidZone music service coming to Europe tomorrow"

This is so untrue, it's not coming to Europe, it's coming to a selected few countries in Europe.

Allow me to mention the views: I hope that vidzone to be more popular, because in other countries can not benefit from this service. I am in China. IP in China, the region is unable to enjoy not to mention to other places. The service is now the project of your company or only five European countries can be used, it is a pity. Should let the world be able to join as quickly as possible. Together to have such a convenient service. Make your company's global reputation and interests of the greatly enhanced. Let the world's people to come cheer for your company! Also reflects your company a success and virtue.
