Siliconera reports that Sony has filed a patent for an Emotion Engine emulation system to be used in conjunction with the PlayStation 3’s Cell processor.
For those unaware, the Emotion Engine was the name given to the chip designed to function as the PlayStation 2’s CPU, a feature that is notably missing from latter PS3 SKUs, hence why they aren’t backwards compatible.
However, utilizing this new technology, it would now be theoretically possible for PS3’s lacking the Emotion Engine to emulate the last-gen chip and play PS2 games without any additional hardware modifications. We'll have more on this story as it becomes available.

I've played dozens of PS2 games on my 60GB PS3, and one of my biggest fears is that someday my 60GB will crash and I'll be unable to get a backwards-compatable replacement.
This news is great if it fleshes out!

I already got a PS3 with backwards compatibility, so I don't care if they add this or not. If you want to play ps2, the ps2 is now just $99 so instead of waiting just go to the store and get one

Please correct this story. The Patent on the ee emulator is from last year for the method of BC they used on the 80gb PS3. THIS DOES NOT SIGNIFY ANYTHING NEW. THIS IS OLD TECHNOLOGY THEY USED IT ALREADY. It's the GS that needs to be emulated before they can give EVERY PS3 BC again...
PLEASE FIX THIS ARTICLE, IT'S MISSLEADING.

ive always said if the ps3 is the most powerful console then they can create an emulator strong enough to run flawlessy wtf is going on, but I understand its probably not easy but when the ps2 dropped it was cool to be able to play ps1 games on the ps2 but you come to realize that you bought a next gen console for the next gen games. (not saying ps2 has horrible games but the ps3 should first and foremost be about the ps3 games).yea when the ps2 came out I played 2 ps1 games PUTS UP FLAME NERD SHEILD
ive always figured the ps3 would be able to play ps2 games (even the 40gb new 80gb ) because if you play a ps1 game on the ps3 it ask to create a save mem card for ps1/2 yes even on the non bc ps3's but if it is true then im not going to complain

ILL TELL YOU ALL RIGHT NOW............sony is filing this, NOT TO BE NICE and give all those ppl that didnt get their ps3's at lauch backwards compatability... they filed for this emulation so they can start putting PS2 games on the PSN network and SELL THEM. Why do u think the PS2 games arent on the PSN right now? They wont add that value to the PS3 all of a sudden for no price.

But the ORIGINAL Eu ps3s were already emulating the EE,it was the Graphic synthesizer that was and is the only problem in emulating ps2 games. But HOPEFULLY Sony has found an emulation method for that as well,so that we may have b/c back in all it's glory very soon, hopefully b4 the end of this year, though releasing this update would mean that the ps2 would become a pointless purchase,so may be when it's "10 year" lifecycle is over we'll have b/c for ps3s.
