GamesCom: Firmware 3.0 unleashed on September 1st

Sony has today revealed that Firmware 3.0 for PlayStation 3 will be rolled out on September 1, 2009.
According to the chaps at CVG, this latest update adds a plethroa of features, among which include animated XMB themes (one such example was illustrated during Sony's GamesCom press conference earlier today, which had LittleBigPlanet's SackBoy running around a globe behind the PS3's menu items)
In addition, Firmware 3.0 also adds a 'Whats New' section, BBC iPlayer, along with various "other great interface changes." That's all the info we have available at present, though we hope to bring you more on the update later this week.

for the people that keep goin on about "backwards compatibility".........PLEASE SHUT UP, if you really wanna play PS2 games then go and get a PS2. they're goin for £29.99 on tesco online and the PS2 has become smaller than a ps3 game case so you'll hardly notice its there....and all for the price of a ps3 game. SIMPLES

I'll just wait for 'cross-game chat' to come out and see what all the nay-sayers think of it then. Just take for example, someone is playing a new game you're really hyped about, you send them message saying 'whats the game like?', they are only gonna send back a 'its awsome' or something along those lines because they aren't going to be bothered typing a book for you. Where as you could just use cross-game chat and talk to them and they could explain everything to you without having to do anything apart from get into the chat.
Also you might have a real life friend and want to talk to them but they are playing a game and you don't want to have to play that game to talk to them or waste money on calling them (personally I'd rather free chat than pay for on phone).
That is only 2 reasons why, pretty much voice > text, it's faster and more detailed.

@oatmeal what a stupid comment, why would you not want to chat to someone just because they are playing a different game? In fact quite often i have seen my friends online playing a different game to me and would love to be able to chat to them, whilst getting on with my game.
Its called socialising!
