SCEE boss says Wii slump and PS3 upturn is good for publishers

Sony Europe chief Andrew House has described the PlayStation 3’s increased performance at retail combined with the slump in sales of Nintendo’s Wii platform as a positive outcome for third-party publishers.
Speaking to GI.biz, House commented: "I think at a time when we're seeing one of the major competitors somewhat losing a sense of momentum - at least in many of the markets I've looked at - it's gratifying to see a platform that's always had a very significant share of sales go to third party publishers capture that momentum again.”
“The knock-on effect can only be a positive one if publishers are making up 75 per cent of the sales on a particular platform, as opposed to a much smaller share elsewhere, then that's the platform I think it's in their interests to see succeed - and I think that's the dynamic we're seeing return right now,” he added.
Touching on the PS3’s performance at retail, House – unsurprisingly – attributed the spike in sales to the lower price point, noting folk have been commenting that the high end machine is now selling at the price they had hoped for:
"People have been telling us we've reached the price point they were hoping for, and as a result we've got the wind in our sales - that the market really is there for the PS3 to command," said House.

The Wii's outselling the PS3... Maybe if you did rip Europeans off it would be closer to Wii.

The PS3 is where its at. Devs must be blind if they cant se that yet. Game sales alone should show that the PS3 owners are the ones that buy more games. Wii has more than a 10 million lead on PS3, 360 has an 8 million lead on the PS3 yet the PS3 version of multi plat games have a higher attach rate. MW2 for example sells about 100K more copies a week on the 360 than the PS3. 8 million lead = 100K ? Either the 360 sales number are largely inflated due to RROD re buys or the PS3 owners are playing more games.

The problem with the Wii is it has a bunch of shovelware that nobody is interested in or likes.

Wrong, FPS's have a huge attach rate on the 360 more than the PS3 but the PS3 still holds on.

Wii sales are bad for us, the gamer customer (I won't use hardcore as it is an oxymoron) who buys at least 5 games a year. Wii casual gamer buy what, 2-3 games a year tops? I hate M$ and their shoddy hardware and software, but I rather have the 360 than a Wii since most good 360 games are multi-platform. Still, the PS brand is the one with far more the diverse gamin selection, not just shooters. Nince PS3 bundle from Walmart yesterday, Infamous and Batman:AA are can't miss games, and the Dark Knight on BD for $300 was a great deal.

The attach rate cant be that high if an 8 million lead in hardware equates to a 100-300K sales difference. I agree that the FPS people are buying more on the 360 as that is what the 360 has been geared towards, but the PS3 is selling more games per console.
