Sony Computer Entertainment officially announced today that its Motion Controller for the PlayStation 3 will be available in fall 2010 in Japan, Asian regions and countries, North America and Europe/PAL territories. The announcement says the controller will be released alongside an ‘extensive line-up of exciting software titles.’
The Motion Controller, as it is tentatively named (still), will require the PlayStation Eye to operate. Both devices will detect the natural and intuitive movements of the hand and reflect the precise movement within the game. Sony believes this will offer a ‘whole new entertainment experience on PS3.’
"We have decided to release the Motion Controller in fall 2010 when we will be able to offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users," said Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "We will continue to work to have a comprehensive portfolio of attractive and innovative games for the Motion Controller, not only from SCE Worldwide Studios but also from the third party developers and publishers, whom we have been working closely with. We look forward to soon unveiling the exciting software line-up that further expands and defines the PS3 platform as the ultimate entertainment system for the home."
The controller was originally slated for spring release.

this not gonna be good for the console, they're just making it childish like the Wii
I hope no one takes it seriously so they remove it from the market by the end of the year

@3 absofriggalutely right.
One question though, what happened to the Q1 2010 release date previousely announced ? i know they pushed it back to have more software to back up the hardware, but y make such bold statements in the first place if they're not up to it. SONY, get ur act together, come on.

Did Sony get a new marketting head honcho, who's delaying the crap out of all their products? @1 Sony has said that the controller's motion detection will work without the PSeye, but full body tracking will require it.

well smart thing to do is to sell it along with the ps eye. and also sell it in its own at a slightly cheaper price for ppl who already own the ps eye.
also, a lot of ppl already have a ps3, so why not bundle it in with the ps3 console, therefore it will give another reason for new ppl to own the ps3 and also, ppl with an older ps3 on the way out may think to buy an entire new console, much similar to waht they have done here in australia with bundling the playtv in with the new ps3 250GB.
People who want it to fail are idiots really. why not have a console that 'supposedly does everything' do even more, and be of interest to a wider market. i was sceptical at first at the ps3 wand, and still am about buying it, but its not about me, and whether i want it. i work part time at a store, and as soon as we get a crate of new wii's come in they are gone in days, and the ps3's just sit there. yes it is mostly mothers who are buying the wii's, but does it really matter...

No offense but some people really need to get over themselves. It's a grand paradox to simply say that gaming shouldn't be "childish" because gaming IS initially for kids. The majority of games that became the foundation of our beloved hobby today were geared towards children. Above all things games are entertainment and I am all for the motion control because it will expand the capabilities of the PS3. The simple reason for that is that it will bring back the party play concept just like the Wii did. Online is great but I really miss the days where there were more than just a handful of games you could play with other people in ur living room. Also keep in mind that although the Wii hasn't really taken that huge a leap towards a new age of gaming, the PS3 motion controller just might.

@2 yer I'm absolutely with you there, that's a good point.
@12 surely the Wii is selling strong, but who really cares when it get's boring after a few weeks, everyone I know who bought a Wii did regret it because it went from console to dust collector. I've sold mine too because it wasn't just what I've expected it to be, I'm totally happy with my PS3. Wii is a FAD but no one want's to admit that because they would have looked dumb afterwards :D

If they release some good RTS games that make use of it I will buy it, if it's just crapy party games I wont.

Bad sony. The fall time is usually the time that great games come out. They should release it during the summer when no good games come out.
Top 5 features added to the ps3 since launch

Wow, there are a lot of Wii haters. Have I can't help but wonder if those of use who call the Wii childish have spent time playing Wii Sports or Mario Kart Wii with family and friends. The Wii is actually a fantastic platform that gets a lot of lousy 3rd party titles. Nintendo has ALWAYS released some of the greatest video games I've ever played. The Wii is no exception to this. The only 1st party title that I haven't enjoyed at all would have to be Wii Music (I don't know what they were thinking), other than that, the Wii has been golden in my opinion.
As for the Motion Controller: PS3 has much better 3rd party titles as of late and I'm excited to see what they come up with to utilize the obvious next step in gaming. Other than being a financial risk for Sony, I don't see any reason for video game fans to be upset or discouraged by this, as even if it fails, the PS3 will still be awesome.

OMG, i was looking forward to this! as for the people sayin it's childish and wanting it to fail -_- Sony would of really had the slip on MS if they released this early, maybe it's been delayed because they want to have a good spread of software and hardware across the year, March = Kratos's Month :D

humm not sure that having to use it along with the playstation eye is such a good thing, why can't it work on its own like the Wii controllers? ... it won't affect myself as I already have the camera but still

Fall? Wow by then I was hoping to have new info about a ps4 being under development. It seems like this might be a little late to market. When I heard spring I was considering buying it just to compare against my wii, but I dont see the value of buying something that I will only use for a year or so, I mean by next fall my ps3 will be almost 4 years old, the idea of dropping coin on accesories for something that will likely be replaced in a year is not very appealing.
BTW, whats the deal with guys using a crazy hot, unattainable girl pic as their profile.?

the wii remotes need a sensor bar to work, the ps eye is working just like that except, you'll have a camera and sensor bar in one!

Big mistake. The launch of this hardware will be right with the launch of NATAL, which many will see as a better and more futuristic technology. Both from developers and gamers.
The only chance Sony had to take thunder away from Microsoft and perhaps build some hardware sales was launching this thing long before NATAL and having developers bring out games just for the Wand and building a software lineup with many great exclusives. Now you will have developers choosing sides at this years E3 and Microsoft will be able to showcase why NATAL is superior to a Wand or a Wiimote with ease.
Oh well, I'm excited for the Wand myself but I just see this is a big mistake by Sony that will be costly.

it's good they're holding it back 'till the software arrives because it makes it less like a console launch, when the PS3 launched there was barely any games released, especially ones that fully used the hardware ( unfortunately the console had already been delayed - especially in europe so waiting for software wouldn't be a good option ) it works here because you get a good library of games to choose from immediately as the controller is released

No real surprise here. I was thinking this would happen after hearing the news at ces that project natal would launch in the fall of 2010. You can tell this was going to happen because if Sony was ready for a spring launch then they would have a name for the controller by now and launching in the spring or summer isn't a good marketing move. Launch in the falll before christmas and steal some of the thunder away from microsoft's natal camera. Waiting for more software titles to launch with the controller is also a good move as first impressions mean a lot.

What's the point in releasin the motion controller before there's a good line-up of games for it, I think this is a smart move from sony. I'm looking forward to what the motion controler can do with my ps3!
