Sony talks monthly PSN fees again; more on PS3 downloadable games

The PlayStation Network has been touted by gamers, not just because of the content on the PlayStation Store, but also because the service is free. That may all change someday as we’ve heard repeated remarks from Sony executives that the company is considering charging for some of its PSN services. We’ve seen questionnaires sent to our U.K. readers about what services they’d like to see in a paid PSN account, and we’ve heard from Sony’s Masayuki Chatani about the possibility of monthly-fee for a premium account. In a recent interview with IGN, Sony senior VP of marketing Peter Dille says the possibility of per-fee PSN is “something that [Sony’s] actively thinking about.”
Sony still has no official announcement about paid subscriptions, since the company is trying to determine “the best way to approach” the topic.
If you enjoyed downloadable PlayStation 3 games, you may not have many more to put on your system in the near future. Dille said it is not likely Sony will release more full PS3 games. He said the decision is largely based on the size of a game. As a Blu-ray disc contains 50GBs, Dille said most gamers do not want to wait around for such a large file to download.

if its a must, they can put for some services a montly fee or such, but i sincerely hope online play, such as multiplayer stays free...if not they will lose their biggest advantage over xbox live

... If PSN doesn't stay free and it doesn't reach the level of xbox online by the time it will have fees I'll sell my PS3. After playing GoW 3 and The Last Guardian of course :D

As long as Sony's main service remains free it should be fine and I'll stick with that. However they can shove there Premium paid service where the sun don't shine!

"He said the decision is largely based on the size of a game. I love how reactive people are.
I was one of the many UK users who were surveyed about the PS3 subscription service.
Out of all of the options presented to us they were all NEW services.
EVERYTHING that you currently get for free will CONTINUE to be free, with premium users gaining items which may include (as they havent defined the packages in any shape or form yet):
Cloud Storage for game saves - accessible from any PS3 in the world without activation
Premium Perks - Early access to beta's, Free tickets to Sony Events and product launches
Larger Integrations support - Facebook and 'a pandora style music streaming service'.
Seriously, everyone who says 'I'd sell if i had to pay' is just not paying attention to the information being provided. NOTHING will change. You'll get EXTRA stuff for signing up.
On a side note: The survey had pricing options ranging from 19.99 a year to 99.99 a year (depending on the content etc etc) I assume they were using this to gauge some kind of average price point across all options and participents. With Xbox Live Gold being £30-odd a year, i don't think they'd go much over that anyways, and some of the items in the dummy packages from the survey are truely interesting and would be worth paying a fee for.

An optional "premium" service sounds interesting. But only if it's optional.

The problem with this premium idea is that it will eventually have all the good things on it and normal accounts won't have anything... I quite prefer everyone having equal access to everything, espically after we've had to pay for the machine

If they charged $15 a month, and made it like Netflix, where you can download all the movies and TV shows you want, then sign me up! Cause i wouldnt need netflix anymore! Sony would dominate the digital distribution with that move!! DO IT! DO IT!!
