Most sandbox games are 'boring, hard to get into' says Battlefield 3 dev

Today’s hardcore sandbox games are mostly “boring, hard to get into and not very popular,” claims Patrick Bach, executive producer on Battlefield 3.
Bach’s comments come during a chinwag with EDGE magazine, where he elaborated on the challenges that developers are faced with when crafting the sandbox experience.
As such, after cutting its teeth in a number of open-world outings over the years, DICE has opted to adopt a more linear approach to Battlefield 3's combat, echoing Call of Duty's scripted antics rather than the sandbox-flavoured battles of Battlefield 2: Bad Company.
"I don't see it as an absolute goal for all games to be sandbox games. We've been building sandbox games for quite some time and we've got pretty good at it, but I don't see that as the only way of building games, because then we wouldn't build campaigns at all," said Bach.
"In some cases they aren't, but in most cases sandbox games are hardcore, boring, hard to get into and they are not very popular.”
"Just the fact that the environment can change dynamically creates a huge challenge for us when it comes to AI," he continued.
"[It] puts a lot of challenges to our AI code when it comes to finding new cover, reacting to the fact that it has disappeared, moving and flanking based on the new situation."
Battlefield 3 will be deployed for PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 in fall 2011.

I agree with him, theyre not popular at all, just look at Red Dead Redemption for example:
"The game received widespread critical acclaim, with much praise given to the presentation of the open world, story, and soundtrack. The game has received a 95/100 on both Metacritic and GameRankings. On GameRankings, it is the fifth best rated Xbox 360 game of all time, having an aggregate of 94% based on 67 reviews and the third best rated PlayStation 3 game of all time with a score of 95% based on 48 reviews. Red Dead Redemption has also been enormously commercially successful. According to Eurogamer, Red Dead Redemption shipped over 5 million units in May and June. As of February 2011, the game has shipped a total of 8 million copies. (wikipedia)

And let me guess, First Person Shooters are not boring?! The genre that hasnt changed since 1997? Yeah.... no thanks. Id rather play a sandbox game over a shooter ANY day of the week.

I tend to agree that sandbox games are boring. I hate travelling around looking for quests to do, I rather have the game do that for me. just tell me which way to go, and who to kill, and it shouldn't take a half an hour to get there. sandbox games feel like mmo's to me.

@#2 - yeah, shooters havent changed since then. From Goldeneye to Metroid Prime....
also, why is everyone freaking out so much? He's probably talking from his own personal taste.
and just a thought most overlook.. even Metal Gear Solid games can be "sandbox"

Yeah, sandbox games are only some of the biggest sellers of all time with some of the highest ratings and awards. Genius.

sandbox > FPS my opinion ....... but hey, what do i know......

If it's just matter of opinion then so be it. I thought Red Dead Redemption was brilliant and the ideal for sandbox games. On the other hand I can not stand the GTA series. The fact is that all genres have their highs and lows.
For myself no other FPS grabbed my attention like the one/two punch of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64 during my college days. Personally I feel that this generation the FPS genre overall has become boring and hard to get into, especially on the "war" front. Looking at my shelf there is only one FPS that I own and still play and that is Bioshock.

I seriously wonder what these game devs are smoking sometimes.
