Inside PlayStation Network - PixelJunk Racers

The digital delights of Sony’s scrumptious PlayStation Network service know no bounds. Aside from letting punters compete in online gaming, stream films, browse the Internet and more, its premier attraction rests in the copious supply of downloadable games ripe for the picking. From PSN exclusives to PSOne Classics, minis and plain old add-on content, Sony’s online space is chock full of goodies battling it out for your hard-earned digital dollars.

Today, we take a look at the 2007 outing PixelJunk Racers.

A slot car-inspired outing from Q-Games’ now-ubiquitous PixelJunk series, PixelJunk Racers offers up a bunch of bite-sized events suitable for either solo or multiplayer consumption. Like its barebones aesthetic, the game’s controls couldn’t be more simplistic. Players use the D-pad or analogue stick to switch lanes, hitting L2 or R2 to toggle speed. As you’d expect from slot car racing, you don’t have any direct steering control, and therefore can only change lanes one at a time.
PixelJunk Racers throws up 10 different tracks to whiz around, as well as a surprisingly meaty 32 game types to devourer. Tracks and modes can be unlocked via the game’s solo tournament. A good chunk of the events are based around rudimentary principles such as simply racing to the finishing line, though PixelJunk Raers isn’t without its idiosyncrasies, as seen in ‘the munchies’ event, which appropriately has you gobbling up other cars to stay alive. Other times you may find yourself inflating your vehicle like a balloon or avoiding your competitors for a specified amount of time until you transform into a fireball.
As mentioned, the game also boasts a multiplayer component, and it’s here that you will be able to set up custom groupings for local matches. Oddly enough there aren’t any online competitive modes, though with seven players able to duke it out on one console, matches can get pretty crazy to say the least. Plus, there’s always the score-attack option which houses obligatory leaderboards if you fancy testing your might against other players. An update, PixelJunk Racers 2nd Lap, chucks in Trophy support, a Ghost Attack mode and various other game types for players to sink their teeth into.
