Sony unveils PS Vita global sales

Speaking during an earnings call this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment chief Kazuo Hirai confirmed that PlayStation Vita has sold 1.8 million units globally as of March 31, 2012.

Hirai described the figures as “a good start” for its flagship handheld console.

“A game platform, like Vita – the software is the key to success, how good the software is,” he commented. “We have to reinforce the software area in order improve the business, that is the basic line.”

“We still have a very high motivation to develop this further. There is no change. And services and software must be strengthened,” he added.

The platform holder previously confirmed that PS Vita had moved 1.2 million units as of late February 2012, meaning the handheld sold an additional 600,000 units throughout March.

PlayStation Vita was released in Japan in December 2011, and arrived in the U.S. and Europe in February.
