E3 2012: Sony's Jack Tretton says 'it's about being the best'

Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has said his company is more concerned with making the best games console possible as opposed to being first out the door with cheaper hardware.
Chatting with GTTV this week at E3, Tretton observed that Sony has never been first to bring a product to market, and would rather develop a better platform than rush something into stores.
“We’ve never been first. We’ve never been cheapest. It’s about being the best,” said Tretton.
“If you can build a better machine and it’s going to come out a little bit later, that’s better than rushing something to market that’s going to run out of gas for the long term."
“In a perfect world you want the best machine that ships first that’s cheapest. But the number one goal is to be the best machine and that’s what we’re always focused on," he added.
Elsewhere, Tretton was quizzed on the status of Rockstar’s elusive Agent, which has failed to put in appearance at E3 since its unveiling in 2009.
“You couldn’t have said it better when you said Agent from Rockstar. I work for Sony Computer Entertainment. The second I start working for Rockstar, I’ll have some definitive information for you on Agent.”

It seems the masses would rather something come first, than something being the best. I respect his comments, but maybe they should try being first and cheaper and see how that works out.

I like sony, but I don't want to see them go out of business because they want to make the "best" console that only a few people buy. It's encouraging when a lot of people buy a console because you know more developers will want to make games for it. Right now, people are looking for the best offers for entertainment.

I really like Jack, guy says it like it is, and you really feel like he isn't repeating corporate PR scripts, plus he handled the e3 conference brilliantly.

Sony exists today because it strives for innovation and quality, that's why their products have such a high satisfaction rate. May be the average consumer couldn't give a crap about all the detail that Sony focuses on, but I can tell you that so long as there are people like us , Sony won't go out of business anytime soon.
