Jack Buser, senior director of Digital Platforms at Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has hit out at competitors Microsoft and Nintendo, criticising both firms for leaving core gamers in the dark at E3 this week.
Chatting with VentureBeat, Buser said that the reaction to Sony’s presser had “been just amazingly positive,” before adding:
“Some of our competitors, seemingly, are losing the plot, forgetting what built this industry. It was the gamer. And our press conference really drove that home.”
Buser went on to highlight some of the key areas of Sony’s press conference, such as the show-stopping Beyond: Two Souls and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, which he believes represent the type of software gamers are itching to get their mitts on.
"We showed amazing partnerships with our third parties. We showed incredible titles from our first parties. The Last of Us, you saw that? Beyond: Two Souls. You see these titles and they represent some of the... I'm biased, but these are the best games I've ever seen, and they're exclusive to our platform. These are the types of games that gamers want, and they're pushing what a console game can be to the next level.”
"I've watched all of our competitors very closely," he said. "And I think we did a very good job of drawing a solid line in the sand here at E3, and standing up with our back straight as PlayStation and saying 'We're for gamers'.

Totally Agree. I just wish they can market their stuff better. Sony's play equipment could do alot more. They needa UP their R&D, cause these other consoles are bringing similar things, a 2nd screen device. PSP could've done that and definitly the Vita can also.

I didn't expect much from microsoft so the real dissapointment came fron nintendo which seemed kinda promising, but shown almost nothing (only picmin 3 in fact :). I'd expect a new Metroid Prime announcement, a new Legend Of Zelda, a sequel to Eternal Darkness maybe or an exclusive Resident evil, since that happened sometimes in the past BUT, nothing... Almost nothing, there still is picmin 3... At least we always have (going to have) God Of War Ascension, Beyond Two Souls and The Last Of Us. Sometimes i wonder what this generation would be without a PS3.

I'm amazed at the "new tech" from M$ and Nintendo :
- for M$ the presenter says sometimes you want to pause the movie to know more about an actor or director, the place you see or the music, but now with Smartglass you can use your tablet or phone and directly check it! - but you'll have to pause anyway to check this info - which allows you to go to your PC or phone a friend to get the info, making it totally useless
- you now have the WiiU controller that has buttons and a touch screen - which many casuals will just hate as it's not fun to take in hand and seems very complicated, and you have to look first at the big screen then the small one then ... - most casuals will feel overwhelmed and bored fast (and this is just not required, opening the item menu or switching to detective mode was very practical) ; and then you can play Call of duty and big new games - which the casuals just don't care about ... Congratulations for alienating your favored audience, Nintendo!

@5 Nintendo's favoured audience was never the casual market. Before the Wii, they aimed at the core/hardcore just like Sony and (although now to a lesser extent) Microsoft. It was only once the Wii came out and Nintendo realised that they couldn't make many hardcore AAA titles on it that they focused more on the casual audience, noticing that there was a massive market for casual shovelware and family titles. With the Wii U, they can bring over the casual market that the Wii attracted, whist also returning to the core market and (hopefully) producing some decent hardcore titles. They're not alienating their favoured audience at all, just hopefully supporting the people that helped make them big in the first place that they alienated with the Wii. Maybe the Wii U won't be as casual, but casual gamers will still get it.
However, Sony is definitely dominating the hardcore market. It will take Nintendo a lot to win back those they alienated with the Wii, such as myself. Nintendo are now too casual for me, and they need to produce more than a few AAA titles to bring me back. Microsoft, on the other hand, with a lack of substantial IPs and incresedly milking the same franchises, are now attempting to tap into this casual market with Kinect, hoping to do what the Wii did. Either way, both companies are currently too casual for my liking, and Sony remains dominant.

@8 The difference is, Microsoft would be lying. They would be stupid to make such claims. Even Xbox fanboys disliked the Microsoft conference, with 90% of their comments being negative. But the fact is, Sony focused heavily on the core gamers, whereas Nintendo and Microsoft's conference were very casual-oriented. Therefore, competitors neglected the core gamers.
