Metal Gear Solid 5: Isn't it time for something new from Kojima?

We assumed that the arrival of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, the hack-and-slash spin-off to Hideo Kojima’s insanely popular series, signalled the end of the franchise in its usual format; but this week we discovered that Metal Gear Solid 5 is indeed in the making.

We don’t doubt the skill of the team at Kojima Productions to produce another amazing entry in the series, but it does beg the question of this aging franchise and the Japanese team in Tokyo: are we ever going to see Kojima Productions branch out and try something different?

We’d love to see a new IP from Kojima Productions, using that experience and knowledge that it’s gained from the Metal Gear franchise and injecting that into something brand new and innovative, much in the same way it blew everyone away with the first Metal Gear game 25 years ago. And we’re not talking about Zone of the Enders—although we’d love that, too.

To a certain extent, Metal Gear Rising does that with its slice-and-dice mechanic, which enables users to slash at any angle right through people and objects, but it’s all very much still part of the same “Metal Gear-verse.” Isn’t it time for something truly new and unique from a studio that we know has that capability?

Let's open this up to debate right here. We know there are a lot of you Metal Gear Solid fans out there--we're here, too--so what are your thoughts? Are you excited about Metal Gear Solid 5? Do you want something new from Kojima?

As long as the story and gameplay are top notch like the other MGS games, i don't think there's a problem with new MGS games.

I'm excited to see MGS:5 on the Fox Engine.  Could be that Kojima knows how he wants the series to end.

I think you are being very much short-sighted about this. Without money making franchises like COD, Madden, FIFA, RE, MGS, and so many more we wouldn't get the new IPs that we do. Money from these franchises are what keep these companies in the black and allow them to venture out to invest in new IPs. Seriously...if there is a demand for it then what is the problem?? Sure it might not be the cool new hip IP or get your web hits for your little articles but I assure you this game is good for gamers, good for Kojima (keeps them working in a recession), and good for Konami (can fund other IPs).

Would we all like to see what else they could do....sure but I am sure there are many millions of people that are happy to play the next edition in the series...me included.

PSU what does ' we ' mean ? in whose name are you speaking ? if some of you individuals that want something new could send kojima an e-mail and express your feelings to him that would be normal but you keep repeating ' we ' all the time and as a hadrcore MGS fan boy i must say you are going on my nerves,if you dont like MGS thats your problem, for me every time a new MGS comes out is something that sets the standards for all other games.and if he asks me i would say keep making MGS till you die.

He can't make something new, Konami keeps pushing him back into MGS. Remember he wanted his last title to be MGS 2

He is like Lucas Art's with Star Wars. We need the inteligence for new games. or Hideo Kojima dosen't know what new to do.

To reiterate more on my previous thought...just chew on this...if Naughty Dog wouldn't have decided to spin out Uncharted 2 and 3 and allowed rights to have the vita game made would they have been able to expand their dev house adding more jobs and give us what we believe to be one of the hottest new ips out there (The Last of US). Milking franchises give fans what they want while allowing the studios to have profits to branch out to other ips.

There is still more of the MGS story to be told. I, for one, am eager to play it. More of a good thing is just fine by me - it's not as if I don't still get to play other good new games as well as sequels to old favorites.

I am a life long MGS fan, love the story, love the characters, and feel there is more to be told in this story.  Never have I played a MGS game and said wow this is more of the same... bring it on Kojima I want more of this great franchise!!

it was disappointing to see Kojima on an e3 xbox conference so if MGS5 turns into a multiplatform game I won't buy it MGS was born on playstation and should have stay there.

Agreed. MGS5 needs to be exclusive. XBox fans will say that I am being selfish but no multiplatform game could be as good as if it had been an exclusive.

Every MGS game is astonishing. the story is so emotional and exciting. MGS5 and every game after is a must buy. they should never stop making mgs games.

MGS is something sacred among gamers. Touch it and you'll burn :) I am very pleased, almost touched, by the fan's responses to this article (I, of course, am one of them). ''...they should never stop making MGS games...''
