Capcom explains why zombies are back in Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 6 head honcho Hiroyuki Kobayashi has shed light as to why Capcom has re-introduced zombies for the latest instalment in the venerable horror franchise.

Speaking during a chinwag with Siliconera, Kobayashi-san revealed that the rotting, shambling foes were brought back as they proved popular with fans  -- apparently, people weren’t too happy they didn’t feature in Resident Evil 4 and 5.

“We brought zombies back because they’re popular. Everyone loves ‘em, that’s why we brought them back,” he said with a chuckle.

"Based on feedback from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, the fact that there weren’t classic zombies in those games and people really wanted them. We tried to respond to the requests and put them in this game. We tweaked them a bit so they aren’t the same zombies you would expect."

Elsewhere, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi went on to describe how RE6’s zombies behave differently than the undead depicted in The Walking Dead and Dead Rising, or indeed previous Resident Evil games.

"The zombies when you first see them, they shamble around slowly. But, if they spot you or they get closer they break out into a sudden dash and try to grab you. We tried to make this as instantaneous as possible. Some of them will leap out at you," he said.

"Also for the weapons they use in the game, it’s not that we decided zombies should use weapons per se. It’s just that we wanted to get across the feeling that these used to be people and people either picked up weapons when they were fighting or they used certain objects when they were alive. They have this instinctual ability to pick up these things and use them. It’s not that they are purposely using weapons, it’s in the back of their mind because they used to use weapons before they became zombies."

Zombies were a staple of the classic Resident Evil games and became synonymous with the franchise back in the late 90s and early 00s. However, starting with Resident Evil 4, Capcom introduced a new breed of humanoid foes known as The Los Ganados, and later, Resident Evil 5’s Majini and Resident Evil Revelations’ Ooze.

Resident Evil 6 is due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 2, 2012.

Wow! It took Capcom all these years to figure out that about 3/4 of their fan base were pissed off that they pulled the zombies out.  Good example on how much developers don't pay attention. =/

@vietguy1127 you're exactly right...it's all about the money and that's why they never cared too much about putting the zombies back in. but people have been complaining about the direction they went in when they took the zombies out for a while now. it's kinda odd that they finally chose to listen, but I'm glad they did. once I found out that the zombies from past games were making a comeback, I started to consider buying this one

Was never really a fan of RE 1-3, RE4 is where I really got interested in the franchise.

@gameholic007: It's not the developers but PUBLISHERS that make these decisions! When will you guys understand that?

I'm sure the actual developers would've loved to implement zombies in earlier titles already but they are bound to a broad to-do list that is set up by the publisher.

@5- Your wrong. Publishers can make some decisions, depending on the publisher/game, but most of the time, it's developers. Every game has , what you call a LEAD DEVELOPER, that calls most of the shots of what goes in a game.  I have to also note, that the actual developers said themselves, that they changed it.

Publishers, all they care about is the $$$. As long as their getting that, you won't hear jack out of them!
