At today's Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event in Tokyo, Hideo Kojima took the stage to officially announce that an oft-rumored Metal Gear Solid movie is officially in the works.

Posters with the slogan "Metal Gear Solid Hollywood Movie" appeared at the event, and Kojima confirmed the project to those in attendance. Avi Arad will be the producer on the film. Arad is widely known for producing many notable Marvel movies in the last decade, including the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, Fantastic Four, the X-Men trilogy, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, The Amazing Spider-Man, and many more. Arad has also been attached to other Sony video game adaptations, including Uncharted and a rumored inFAMOUS movie.

As Kotaku reports, Michael De Luca of Boogie Nights was attached as producer as recently as 2008, but that version of the Metal Gear Solid movie ultimately fell through due to budgetary conflicts. Apparently, Konami was aiming for a big-budget version of the film that Hollywood didn't have faith in.

Are you excited for a Metal Gear Solid movie? Should the venerated movie franchise simply be left alone? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.

On the fence about this one. I have a feeling Hollywood is just going to destroy it. Look what they did with Resident Evil. And Prince of Persia. And every Uwe Boll movie. And most other video game movies. And just about every movie that comes out these days.

Oh god! I can just feel them picking someone terrible to play Snake! I got a bad feeling about this many MGS fans will be hurt but I hope somehow the come through!
Theres only 2 people i think could pull off a snake roll - 1 Clint eastwood as Old Snake and 2 Christain Bale as any other young snake!

Clint East in Gran Torino really made me say yes he would smash the roll as old snake coz he is a rusky old vet just like snake! What you think people?

I wasent too sure about Bale too but cant think of anyone else within the industry. Bale is a great acter i believe.
Maybe just get a fresh talent to play snake, that way we wont look at them and see clint or bale or whoever. We meet him for first time and get to know him as snake through the film. might be a good way to do it? If anyone understood what I was sayin there lol

No, no, no, no. I think they shouldn't make a MGS movie. Spanning over a very long timeline and having a complex storyline, I feel Hollywood will screw this up

@9 Agreed. Leave it be - video games and movies don't to cross-over media boundaries.

MGS has always has a very distinctive breed of storytelling. I don't see it making the leap to the silver screen gracefully at all. TBH, I expect this film to either flop miserably or die on the vine (and I'm actually kind of hoping for the latter).
