According to an interview with Fumitsu, some very interesting details surfaced for the upcoming Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
The story delivery in Lightning Returns , which is thirty percent is meant to connect the experiences with the other two titles. Final Fantasy XIII was story driven, FFXIII-2 was character driven, and Lightning Returns will be world driven. This means that players will have to determine how they must interact with a changing world.
The characters from FFXII-2 aren't dead. Apparently, because of "the effects of the chaos," everyone has stopped aging and don't get old. So, the age of the world is the determining factor instead. Helping certain people may decrease the life of the world, and defeating certain enemies and completing quests may lengthen the world's life span. The world will have four continents, where two are natural and the other two are city scapes. Throughout the game, clocks will literally be everywhere to indicate the progression of time to maintain the urgent ambiance.
There won't be parties in Lightning Returns, leaving Lightning as the focal point for the entire game. She can be moved around freely on the battlefield, unlike any other Final Fantasy title. Action will be the name of the game in combat. Though it will still contain an ATB gauge that's familiar to FF vets, abilities assigned to face buttons will replace menu commands.
Square-Enix could be testing some of the mechanic ideas it plans to feature in Versus XIII, but this last statement is purely speculation. Final Fantasy XIII has received a lot of love and a lot of hate from Final Fantasy fans, but this direction looks to be, as it were, redeeming the XIII series. Leave us your thoughts on the matter below.

Really? People stopped aging?? Ugh and the story will link FF13 to 13-2? So you'd be in Noels future??... Lame. I wanted a unique story not really tied to FF13 or 13-2 other then Lightning awakens from her ( sleeping state) XXX years later.. At least the battle system sounds like the one showing in 2006 at least which I guessed when I first heard the title Lightning Returns

The story arc does sound interesting, and, in the right hands, could definitely become something of a very intriguing experience. However, Square-Enix hasn't been known this generation to push the boundaries of storytelling. Still, though it sounds too good to be true, the appeal is there and it looks set up to make the wait worth, at the very least, worth trying.

square enix needs to de-merge and go back to square soft, if there is a hack n slash with magick and special menus with a mmo feel (more npc ai across the whole map) and no more enclosed paths, oh and a lvling system and endgame leveling payoff like ff10 then ill consider playing it. ff for me has become slack in gameplay sacrificing it for graphics.

@7 I'm with you on that. I won't deny the fact that I was initially very frustrated with XIII, so I set it aside. After about a year, I returned to it and absolutely loved it. It could have been from diminished standards, but whatever lol.
XIII-2 was a bit weird, but it flowed in an interesting way and was much more character driven, as the article dictates, and I started to really dig that intention.
Now with Lightning Begins, I'm very, very intrigued by the sheer influence that the actual world will have on the game. That concept is pretty hard to execute, I'd think. So, if SE can do this, the company may be on the right track after all. Besides, if fans still want Versus and don't know a thing about it, SE must be doing something right.

o god can we please stop making squels to ff13. i thought ff13 was ok, but ff13-2 was just as bad if not worse than ff10-2. ff13-2 shouldn't have been made it was horrible it was like cutting off your nose to spite your face and sadly if you make ff into a hack and slash; then you would've effectively killed and buried ff permanetly not even ff13 versus could save ff if that happens. So don't bother with this game is will just be trash like the las one. T_T
