Resident Evil 2 remake is possible, says Capcom

Capcom has hinted that a remake of seminal survival horror classic Resident Evil 2 may be possible – providing enough fans get on board the project.

“If the fans really clamor for it; if there’s a groundswell of support for remaking that game, then I think that’s something Capcom would take under consideration,” Resident Evil 6 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi told GameSpot.

“Just to lay all the cards on the table, that way there’s no rumour-mongering or things like that, no, we are not working on a Resident Evil 2 remake as of now," he added.

Resident Evil 2 was released in 1998 on PlayStation and later turned up on PC, Nintendo 64 and GameCube. The game sees Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield caught in the middle of the Raccoon City T-Virus outbreak, and also introduced Ada Wong and Sherry Birkin, both of whom turn up in RE6.

The game went on to achieve massive sales for the franchise and was met with critical acclaim. Unsurprisingly, it has become a favourite among fans, who widely consider it the pinnacle of the ‘classic’ RE games.

If Capcom was to remake the game it would be the second major entry in the series to receive such an overhaul, following on from the Resident Evil remake for GameCube back in 2002.
